  • This study explored the effects of recent 'single life' media contents on the spread of singlehood culture for Korean youth. Extant research on the changing trends across present-centered vs. future-oriented lifestyles had focused mainly on demographic or sociological factors. "Lifestyle transforming (entertainment) reality contents" perspective suggests that reality contents revealing one's personal daily life provides not just entertaining enjoyment but also and more importantly meaningful life-changing experiences for viewers. Given the dependency of single household youth on media use, it is expected that 'singlehood life' media contents such as reality television and YouTube Vlog would have greater influence on viewers' own reality and lifestyles. Survey results indicate that viewership of 'singlehood life' contents showed significant impacts on youth viewers' identification and unmarriedness, as well as present-centered and future-oriented lifestyles. Theoretical and practical implications of these results were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the consumption expenditure patterns and the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditure between single-mother families and two-parent families. From the 2001 Household Income and Expenditure Survey conducted by Korea National Statistical Office (KNSO), 693 single-mother families and 14,439 two-parent families were selected. A t-test was completed to examine how the expenditure patterns of two types of families differ. Total expenditures and expenditures on 11 consumption categories were modeled as functions of permanent income and other socioeconomic variables. Also, dummy variable interaction technique was used to examine whether the independent variables differently affected the expenditures between single-mother families and two-parent families. The results of this study indicated that there were differences between single-mother and two-parent families in the levels and shares of expenditures of each consumption category, and the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditures. Single-mother families had spent less than did two-parent families in each consumption category. However, single-mother families had significantly higher expenditure shares for food at home, shelter, utilities, apparel and shoes, and education. Income elasticities for food at home, shelter, utilities, and education of single-mother families were significantly larger than those of two- parent families.

  • This study examines the relationship between social support with adult children and neighbors on the life satisfaction of elderly individuals in rural areas. The analysis employed a sample of 764 elderly individuals residing in rural area. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, a chi-square test, a t-test, and a multiple regression analysis. First, the respondents reported moderate life satisfaction. Those respondents living alone were less likely to report life satisfaction than those with a spouse. Second, the respondents were more likely to be in contact with their neighbors than their adult children. Third, the respondents were more likely to receive social support from adult children than provide it to them. By contrast, the respondents were more likely to provide social support to neighbors than receive it from them. Fourth, economic status and contact with adult children and neighbors had signigicant effects on the life satisfaction of the respondents. Gender, religion, economic status, health status, increased contact with adult children, and instrumental support to neighbors had positive effects on the life satisfaction of elderly two-person household.

  • Large amounts of household water are required as common households change from the single-residence types of the past to group-residence types. Therefore, the management of reservoirs is urgently required to ensure the supply of clean household water to users. Important considerations for household water include the duration for which the water is stored in the reservoir, the disinfectant's dilution capacity, and the size of the reservoir to allow for the amount of water required for emergencies and firefighting. The drainage efficiency was analyzed in this study using computational fluid analysis for existing rectangular reservoirs and the newly proposed hexagonal reservoir. Thus, it was determined that the centrifugal force generated at the inlet was maintained until the outlet due to the approximately circular shape of the hexagonal reservoir. The findings of this study verified that the centrifugal force improved the flow rate by approximately 35% compared to existing rectangular reservoirs and that drainage was performed efficiently without stagnation zone.

  • The present study attempts to understand the emission pattern of greenhouse gases in people's daily life through the estimation and analysis of the amount and characteristics of the greenhouse gases. Based on the survey of 1,000 people throughout the nation, monthly emission of greenhouse gases per-capita was estimated from their use of fuels, electricity, water, and personal and public transportation means in addition to their waste generation. In the case of personal car drivers, greenhouse gas emission was the greatest from their cars, followed by the emission from electricity, fuels, and public transportation. Emission from water consumption and waste generation was relatively low. Fuel consumption varied depending on the number of household members, their housing type, and the size of their living spaces. Results showed that single-person households emitted the largest amount of per-capita greenhouse gas while greenhouse gas emission from electricity was inversely proportional to the number of persons in a given household.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide a convergence suggestion of health care and social welfare services by empirically analyzing the effects of chronic diseases and quality of life on subjective health cognition in single-household women aged 60 or over. This study was based on the 2016-2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and 1,111 women who had been divorced or bereaved in single-household aged 60 or over were selected. As a result, it was arthritis that showed the largest average difference in subjective health cognition according to the prevalence of chronic diseases. And in the multiple regression analysis that was controlled for demographic characteristics, chronic disease had a negative (-) effect on subjective health cognition, and quality of life had a positive (+) effect on subjective health cognition. The negative (-) factor that had the greatest effect on subjective health cognition was diabetes(-0.084) among chronic diseases, and the positive (+) factor was mobility(+0.173) among the quality of life. Therefore, it suggests that health care services for chronic diseases should be strengthened in order to improve the subjective health cognition of single-person households over 60 years old, and social welfare policies to improve the quality of life should be considered together in a convergence.

  • The purpose of the study was to provide the informations about the economic status of elderly households. Utilizing the 1996 national household data, economic status was investigated by the components of two financial statements: the income and expense statement and the balance sheet statement. Thus it included incomes, consumption, propensity to consume, savings(financial assets), debt amount and net-savings. The elderly households were compared with the nonelderly households. The subgroups of the elderly were also compared. They were divided based on the employment status of the head and household composition. The results showed that the economic status of the elderly was worse compared to the nonelderly. There were also variations among the subgroups of the elderly households. In general, the economic status of retired households and single households were worse than those of employed households and of the households composed of couple and the elderly living with children.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate housing DB construction for elderly people. Document research and content analysis methods were used in this study. The major results of this study are as follows. The number of elderly household is increasing very rapidly. In particular, they consist of a single person or a couple. These households prefer to live and age in a detached house. However, the social welfare system does not satisfy their needs. Therefore a systematic social support or welfare system is required to reflect their needs. For example, related works of housing welfare need to be prepared so that their data base system correctly reflects the socio-demographic characteristics and living conditions of the elderly.
