  • Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a wide-spread zoonotic disease in cattle, which is casued by Mycobacterium bovis that is a part of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC). This study describes a field trial conducted in 42 herds with the history of prevalence bovine tuberculosis. Two cell-mediated immunity tests, the gamma-interferon (${\gamma}-IFN$) assay and the single intradermal tuberculin test (SIT) were applied for the diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis in 5,289 animals. The ${\gamma}-IFN$ assay presented 144 (2.7%) head of cattle with the positive result, and 112 (2.1%) head of cattle were shown to be bTB-positive by the SIT. The positive concordance was 45.5%, and the negative concordance was 98.2%. The ${\gamma}-IFN$ assay showed more positive results in younger cattle, especially between 12 and 23 months of age. It is shown that the strategic combination of both cell-mediated immunity test methods is more efficient for the detection of bTB to reduce the number of false positive individuals which are being slaughtered.

  • A single-gap and single-gamma transflective liquid-crystal (LC) display using patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode was designed. In the device, a vertical electric field drives a vertically aligned LC to tilt down to optimize polarization efficiency. Electrodes of transmissive and reflective area were patterned $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ with respect to the polarizer so that a tilt-down direction of the LC director was $22.5^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ in the reflective and transmissive regions, respectively. In the device, the cell gap was the same for both regions, and the gamma curve matched each other in both regions because tilt angle of LC director was the same according to the applied voltage. Moreover, the dark state was irrespective of the cell retardation value at normal direction, which was highly important in massive fabrications. The switching principle and electro-optic characteristics of the device are reported herein.

  • In oder to investigate the effects of cobalt-60 gamma irradiation on the postnatal body gains and the other influece of the pregnant mice were subjected to single whole-body gamma irradiation externally. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The all mice of 400, 600, and 800 Rads gamma-irradiated groups showed abortion after prenatal gamma irradiation within 4 to 9 days. 2. There were significant differences of the postnatal body gains of mice between the control and treated groups (100 Rads and 200 Rads gamma irradiation). 3. The relation between gamma-irradiated doses and the postnatal growth rates of mice were inversly proportional.

  • In this paper, we give several sufficient conditions ensuring that any positive radial solution (u, v) of the following ${\gamma}$-Laplacian systems in the whole space ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ has the components symmetry property $u{\equiv}v$ $$\{\array{-div({\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{{\gamma}-2}{\nabla}u)=f(u,v)\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^n,\\-div({\mid}{\nabla}v{\mid}^{{\gamma}-2}{\nabla}v)=g(u,v)\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^n.}$$ Here n > ${\gamma}$, ${\gamma}$ > 1. Thus, the systems will be reduced to a single ${\gamma}$-Laplacian equation: $$-div({\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{{\gamma}-2}{\nabla}u)=f(u)\text{ in }{\mathbb{R}}^n$$. Our proofs are based on suitable comparation principle arguments, combined with properties of radial solutions.

  • The thermal stability of duplex high Mn-steel structure have been investigated using 15%Mn~1.0~2.4%C steels which are composed of ${\gamma}$-and ${\theta}$-phases in the range of temperature from 900 to $1100^{\circ}C$, and time from 50 to 300h. The results are as follows ; 1) The grain growth in single-phase region proceeds by grain boundary migration and the relation between mean radius $\bar{r}$ and annealing time t is described as follows ; $\bar{r}^2-{\bar{r}_0}^2=k_0{\cdot}t$ 2) The grain growth of duplex, (${\gamma}+{\theta}$), strucrure is slower than that single phase because the chemical composition of ${\gamma}$-and ${\theta}$-phases differs esch others. 3) The grain of (${\gamma}+{\theta}$) duplex structure grow slowly in a mode of Ostwald ripening. Because grain boundaries of ${\gamma}$-phase migrate under a restriction of pinning by ${\theta}$-phases. 4) In the duplex structures. the dispersed structures change to the dual-structures, as the volume fraction of the dispersed second-phase increase. Consequently, the growth-law, which is controlled by boundary-diffusion change to that of the volume diffusion-mechanism.

  • Effect of single intraperitoneal administration of Cordyceps sinensis (Cs) extract at 24 hour before whole-body ${\gamma}$ - irradiation on the survival ratio, body weight, organ weight changes and serum metabolites in the irradiated mice were investigated. The single pre-administration of Cs extract increased the 40-day survival ratio of irradiated mice from 66.7% to 83.4%. The administration of Cs extract completely prevented weight reductions of spleen and thymus produced by ${\gamma}$ - irradiation (P<0.05, P<0.01). Similar but somewhat less radioprotective effect was also found in the testis of the Cs treated mice. The administration of Cs inhibited the serum hyperglycemia produced by irradiation on the day 7th(P<0.01). However, it did not influence the serum cholesterol and protein levels on the days examined. The present study is the first report regarding Cs which was tested and found to be radioprotective.

  • The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are members of a superfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. Lots of studies in rodents and humans have shown that PPARs were involved in lipid metabolism and adipocyte differentiation. The main objective of this work was to detect the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in whole coding regions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-$\alpha$) and gamma (PPAR-$\gamma$) genes with approach of single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) in the chicken population of Arber Acres broiler, Hyline layer and three Chinese native breeds (Shiqiza, Beijing You, Bai'r). Two SNPs of C1029T and C297T were found in chicken PPAR-$\alpha$ and PPAR-$\gamma$ genes respectively and each SNP found three genotypes in the experimental populations. The results showed that the distribution frequency of 3 genotypes in Arber Acres broiler, Hyline layer and Chinese native breeds had significant differences on the PPAR-$\alpha$ and PPAR-$\gamma$ gene respectively (p<0.01). Furthermore, in the PPAR-$\alpha$ gene, the results of least square estimation for genotypes and body composition traits showed the BB genotype birds had higher abdominal fat weight (AFW) and percentage of abdominal fat (AFP) than AA genotype birds (p<0.05). From these we conjecture the PPAR-$\alpha$ and PPAR-$\gamma$ genes were suffered intensive selection during the long term commercial breeding and the PPAR-$\alpha$ gene may be a major gene or linked to the major genes that impact chicken fat metabolism and the SNPs could be used in molecular assistant selection (MAS) as a genetic marker for the chicken fatness traits.

  • The secondary electron emission coefficient ${\gamma}$ of MgO single crystals according to the gas mixture ratio of Xe to Ne have been investigated by ${\gamma}-focused$ ion beam system. It is found that the MgO single crystals of (111) crystallinity has the highest ${\gamma}$ from 0.09(0.03) up to 0.16(0.04), while from 0.07(0.02) to 0.15(0.03) for (200) and from 0.06(0.01) to 0.13(0.02) for (220) crystallinity for operating Ne (Xe) ions ranging from 50eV to 200eV throughout this experiment. And it is found that the ${\gamma}$ ranged from 0.03 up to 0.06 for Ne-Xe mixtures are much smaller than those of 0.09 up to 0.16 for pure Ne ions under accelerating voltage ranged from 50V to 200V.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the removal efficiency of pathogen (Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium) on meat and fish products (packing condition: vacuum or not and storage temperature: $4^{\circ}C$ or $-20^{\circ}C$) repeatedly exposed at low-dose gamma irradiation. In case of meat products (beef and chicken), E. coli O157:H7 was not observed at the level of 2 kGy single gamma irradiation and 0.5 kGy repeated gamma irradiation and S. Typhimurium was not observed at the level of 2 kGy single gamma irradiation and 1 kGy repeated gamma irradiation. In case of fish products, E. coli O157:H7 and S. Typhimurium were not detected at the level of 0.5 kGy single and repeated gamma irradiation. These results showed that microorganisms on fish products were more efficiently removed than those of meat products with low-dose gamma irradiation. Generally, each packing condition made no difference. However, the products (fish and meat) stored at $-20^{\circ}C$ needed more higher dose gamma irradiation than products at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • In the primary sensory neuron of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN), the peripheral axon supplies a large number of annulospiral endings surrounding intrafusal fibers encapsulated in single muscle spindles while the central axon sends only a few number of synapses onto single ${\alpha}-motoneurons({\alpha}-MNs)$. Therefore, the ${\alpha}-{\gamma}$ linkage is thought to be very crucial in the jaw-closing movement. Spike activity in a ${\gamma}-motoneuron\;({\gamma}-MN)$ would induce a large number of impulses in single peripheral axons by activating many intrafusal fibers simultaneously, subsequently causing an activation of ${\alpha}-MNs$ in spite of the small number of synapses. Thus, the activity of ${\gamma}-MNs$ may be vital for modulation of jaw-closing movements. Independently of such a spindle activity modulated by ${\gamma}-MNs$, somatic depolarization in MTN neurons is known to trigger the oscillatory spike activity. Nevertheless, the trafficking of these spikes arising from the two distinct sources of MTN neurons is not well understood. In this short review, switching among multiple functional modes of MTN neurons is discussed. Subsequently, it will be discussed which mode can support the ${\alpha}-{\gamma}$ linkage. In our most recent study, simultaneous patch-clamp recordings from the soma and axon hillock revealed a spike-back-propagation from the spike-initiation site in the stem axon to the soma in response to a somatic current pulse. The persistent $Na^+$ current was found to be responsible for the spike-initiation in the stem axon, the activation threshold of which was lower than those of soma spikes. Somatic inputs or impulses arising from the sensory ending, whichever trigger spikes in the stem axon first, would be forwarded through the central axon to the target synapse. We also demonstrated that at hyperpolarized membrane potentials, 4-AP-sensitive $K^+$ current ($IK_{4-AP}$) exerts two opposing effects on spikes depending on their origins; the suppression of spike initiation by increasing the apparent electrotonic distance between the soma and the spike-initiation site, and the facilitation of axonal spike invasion at higher frequencies by decreasing the spike duration and the refractory period. Through this mechanism, the spindle activity caused by ${\gamma}-MNs$ would be safely forwarded to ${\alpha}-MNs$. Thus, soma spikes shaped differentially by this $IK_{4-AP}$ depending on their origins would reflect which one of the two inputs was forwarded to the target synapses.
