A CLUSTER SURVEY AROUND THE UNIDENTIFIED EGRET SOURCES

  • Based on optical galaxy data, we executed a systematic search for galaxy clusters around the 15 steady unidentified EGRET GeV gamma-ray sources in high Galactic-latitude sky ([b] > $30^{\circ}$). We found a strong correlation with 3.7$\sigma$ level between close cluster pairs (merging cluster candidates) and the unidentified EGRET sources, though, in contrast, no correlation with single clusters. This result implies that merging clusters of galaxies are a possible candidate for the origin of high galactic-latitude, steady unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources.

  • The objective of this investigation was to evaluate of influence of gestational age at exposure on the prenatal effects of gamma-radiation. Pregnant ICR mice were exposed to single dose of 2.0 Gy gamma-radiation at gestation days from 2.5 to 15.5 days post-coitus. The animals were sacrificed on day 18 of gestation and the fetuses were examined for mortality, growth retardation, change in head size and any other morphological abnormalities. The only demonstrable effect of irradiation during the pre-implantation period was an increase in prenatal mortality. (omitted)

  • We have studied the molecular orientation by the phase transitions of the chiral smectic liquid crystals, 4-(1-Trifluoromethyl-6-ethoxy-hexyloxycarbonlphenyl)-4-nonyloxybiphenyl-4-carbo-xylate (R-TFMEOHPNBC) to seek the original solution of the zig-zag defect using two different experimental techniques; optical system and x-ray scattering. The phase sequence is gamma ferroelectric $(SmC{\gamma}\;^*)$ ${\rightarrow}$ smectic A (SmA) ${\rightarrow}$ isotropic (I). Existence of two layer spacing at chiral smectic phase gives a possibility of the molecular orientation in two different tilt angles, ${\theta}\;_1$ and ${\theta}\;_2$, which are separated each other to the layer normal at a given temperature. The gamma ferroelectric-like phase is, first, discovered in the single compound.

Experimental Studies on Heat Transfer in the Annuli with Corrugated Inner Tubes

  • Experimental heat transfer data for single-phase water flow in the annuli with corrugated inner tubes are presented. In the annuli with parallel flow, ten different annular arrangements are considered. For water flow rate in 1,700${\gamma}$$\^$*/). As P/e becomes closer to 8 in the range below the radius ratio (${\gamma}$$\^$*/) of 0.5, Nusselt numbers increase. However, Nusselt numbers decrease in the range above the radius ratio (${\gamma}$$\^$*/) of 0.5 because flow reattachment position becomes farther in the narrower clearance.

  • This paper will compare $T3{\gamma}_s$ and MITC3 elements, both these two elements are three-node triangular plate bending elements with three degrees of freedom per node. The formulation of the $T3{\gamma}_s$ and MITC3 elements is rather simple and has already been widely used. This paper will prove that the shear strain formulation of these two elements is identical even though they are obtained from two different methods. A single element is used to test the formulation of shear strain matrices. Numerical tests for circular plate cases compared with the exact solutions and with DKMT element will complete this review to verify the performances and show the convergence of these two elements.

Orientation Measurement and Related Mechanical Properties of Directionally Solidified NiAl/$Ni_3Al$ Two-Phase Alloys (일방향응고된 NiAl/$Ni_3Al$ 2상합금의 방향성 측정 및 기계적 특성 평가)

  • $Ni_3Al$ is known as a good high temperature structural material because of high yield strength at ambient temperature. However, it is too brittle to use as a structural material because of their weak grain boundary. In this work, orientation measurement and related mechanical properties of directionally solidified NiAl/$Ni_3Al$ two-phase alloys with various compositions (Ni-23~27 at.%Al) were investigated for developing multi-phase DS-processed alloys with the growth rates of 10, 50 and 100 ${\mu}m/s$ in a modified Bridgeman type furnace. It was found that the multi-phase microstructures such as the $\gamma$ dendrite +${\gamma}'$ matrix duplex microstructure was formed in the hypoeutectic composition of 23 at.%Al, $\beta$ dendrite +${\gamma}'$ matrix duplex microstructure in the hypereutectic composition of 26 and 27 at.%Al. And ${\gamma}'$ single phase was formed in the composition of 24.5 and 25 at.%Al. The hypoeutectic alloy including $\gamma$ dendrites with ${\gamma}'$ matrix showed a large elongation of over 70% at room temperature. However, the room-temperature tensile elongation decreased with increasing Al contents because the volume fraction of brittle $\beta$ dendrites in the ductile ${\gamma}'$ matrix increased.

Shadow Reconstruction Based on Intrinsic Image and Multi-Scale Gamma Correction for Aerial Image Analysis (항공 영상 분석을 위한 고유영상과 멀티 스케일 감마 보정 기반의 그림자 복원)

  • In this paper, the shadow detection and reconstruction method are proposed using intrinsic image, which does not change the essential characteristics under the influence of various illuminance, and multi-scale gamma correction. The shadow detection was estimated by the pixel change information between a grayscale and an intrinsic image of the color image, and the brightness of the image were adjusted by gamma correction in the shadow restoration process. Multi-scale gamma correction is performed for each channel of a color image due to the fact that the saturation can be changed by nonlinear adjustment to individual pixel values. Multi-scale gamma values are estimated based on the information of the crossed edge between shadows and non-shadowed regions in the color image, as a result, the shadows are reconstructed by correcting different region features with multi-scale gamma values. Experimental results show that the proposed method effectively reconstructs shadows in a single natural image.

Study on Single Gap Transflective Liquid Crystal Display using the Vertical Alignment Mode and circular polarizer (수직 배향된 액정 셀과 원 편광판을 이용한 단일 갭 반투과형 액정 디스플레이 연구)

  • We proposed a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using a vertically aligned (VA) liquid crystal cell and circular polarizer. The conventional VA transflective LCDs have problems that there required several compensation films and voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other. To solve these problems, we used circular polarizer and optimized the condition of insulator thickness in the transmissive part and reflective part. Also, we used the patterned vertical alignment (PVA) mode for wide viewing angle in transmissive part. Consequently, this device realized transflective LCD with a single cell gap and single gamma curve.

  • We have designed a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) driven by a fringe electric field, in which the +LC (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$=7.4, rubbing angle= $80^{\circ}$) is homogeneously aligned in the initial state. This device is a problem that the voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other. Thus a dual driving circuit is required. This study shows that optimization of the rubbing angle in the transmissive and reflective regions solves this problem so that the transflective display with a single cell gap and single gamma curve for reflective and transmissive region is possible.

A Study on the Microstructures and Tensile Properties of Heat-Treated Cast Ti-(44-54)at.%Al Alloys (Ti-(44-54)at.%Al 열처리 주조합금의 미세조직과 인장특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the variations of microstructures and tensile properties of Ti-(44-54)at.%Al binary alloys were investigated. The heat-treated microstructure depended greatly on their solidification structure and annealing temperature. We measured the variations of volume fractions of primary and secondary lamellar structure as a function of the heat treatment temperature in a Ti-47at.%Al alloy. The variation of ductility as a function of Al content was in good agreement with the change of fracture mode in the tensile fracture surface. It can be inferred that the variations of yield stress and hardness of ${\gamma}$ phase in a single ${\gamma}$-phase field region are enhanced by anti-site defects created by deviations from the stoichiometric composition. In a Ti-47at.%Al alloy within the (${\alpha}_2+{\gamma}$) two-phase field, the yield stress tended to be the maximum at a near equal volume fraction of lamellar and ${\gamma}$ grains. The ductility depended sensitively on the overall grain size and Al content. The calculation of fracture strain using Chan's model indicated that the change of ductility as a function of annealing temperature was primarily determined by the variations in the overall grain size and lamellar volume fraction.
