This paper presents a study of the effects of the free surface to marine propeller including the mesh effect of the models. In the present study, we conduct the numerical simulation for propeller performance employing the openwater test. The numerical simulations compare the meshing strategies for the propeller and show the effects on both thrust and torque. OpenFOAM is applied to solve the propeller problem and then open water performances of KCS propeller (KP505) are estimated using a Reynold-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS) solver and the turbulence of the $K-{\omega}$ SST model. Unstructured meshes are used in the numerical simulation employing hexahedral meshing for mesh generation. The arbitrary mesh interfacing (AMI) and multiple rotating frame (MRF) are compared to define the best meshing strategy. The meshing strategies are evaluated through 3 classifications, i.e., coarse, medium, and fine mesh. Thus, the propeller can be performed utilizing the best mesh strategy. The computational results are validated by comparison with the experimental results. The $K_T$, $K_Q$, and efficiency of the propeller are compared to an experimental result and for all of the meshing strategies. Thus, the simulations show the influence of meshing in order to perform the propeller performances.

In this paper, we propose a GPU-based method for real-time processing of dynamic re-meshing required for tearing cloth. Thin shell materials are used in various fields such as physics-based simulation/animation, games, and virtual reality. Tearing the fabric requires dynamically updating the geometry and connectivity, making the process complex and computationally intensive. This process needs to be fast, especially when dealing with interactive content. Most methods perform re-meshing through low-resolution simulations to maintain real-time, or rely on an already segmented pattern, which is not considered dynamic re-meshing, and the quality of the torn pattern is low. In this paper, we propose a new GPU-optimized dynamic re-meshing algorithm that enables real-time processing of high-resolution fabric tears. The method proposed in this paper can be used for virtual surgical simulation and physics-based modeling in games and virtual environments that require real-time, as it allows dynamic re-meshing rather than pre-split meshes.
The authors have proposed methods (lead crowning and profile modification) for modifying the geometry of spur gears and investigated the contact pattern as well as the transmission errors to recommend the appropriate amount of modification. Based on the investigation, dynamic load of the modified spur gear drive has been calculated, which is helpful to predict the life of the designed gear drive. Computer programs for simulation of meshing, contact and dynamics of the modified spur gears have been developed. The developed theory is illustrated with numerical examples.
The design and simulation of meshing of a single enveloping worm-gear drive with modified surfaces is presented. Generally worm-gear is generated by the hob which is identical to the worm. This process guarantees the conjugation between the worm and the gear but results in a line contact at every instant which is very sensitive to misalignment. The localization of bearing contact is necessary to reduce the sensitivity of the worm-gear drive to misalignment. Practically this localization is achieved by application of an oversized worm type hob to cut the worm-gear. The oversized hob approach is very practical and effective to localize bearing contact but can not provide the conjugation between the worm and the modified worm-gear. This work proposes an analytical procedure to make the worm surface conjugate to the worm-gear which is cut by the oversized hob. The developed computer program allows the investigation of the influence of misalignment on the shift of the bearing contact and the determination of the transmission errors, the contact ratio and the principle curvatures. The developed approach has been applied for ZK type of single-enveloping worm-gear drives and the developed theory is illustrated with a numerical example.
High-quality tetrahedral meshes are crucial for FEM-based simulation of large elasto-plastic deformation and tetrahedral-mesh-based simulation of fluid flow. This paper proposes a volume meshing method that exploits an octree-based adaptive signed distance field to fill the inside of a polygonal object with tetrahedra, of which dihedral angles are good. The suggested method utilizes an octree structure to reduce the total number of tetrahedra by space-efficiently filling an object with graded tetrahedra. To obtain a high-quality mesh with good dihedral angles, we restrict the octree in such a way that any pair of neighboring cells only differs by one level. In octree-based tetrahedral meshing, the signed distance computation of a point to the surface of a given object is a very important and frequently-called operation. To accelerate this operation, we develop a method that computes a signed distance field directly on the vertices of the octree cells while constructing the octree using a top-down approach. This is the main focus of the paper. The suggested tetrahedral meshing method is fast, stable and easy to implement.
In this paper, an automated adaptive mesh generation scheme, based on an advancing-front-Delaunay method, is presented fur finite element simulation of three dimensional bulk metal farming processes. Basic approach is introduced in detail, including a surface meshing and volume meshing technique and a mesh density control scheme. The presented approach is applied to automatic forging simulation in order to evaluate the effect of the developed schemes. Comparison shows a good agreement between required mesh density and generated mesh density, implying that the presented approach is appropriate for automatic mesh generation in metal forming simulation.
In this paper, the coupling of fine-mesh computational fluid dynamics (CFD) thermal-hydraulics (TH) code and neutronics code is achieved using the Ansys Fluent User Defined Function (UDF) for code development, including parallel meshing mapping, data computation, and data transfer. Also, some CFD schemes are designed for mesh mapping and data transfer to guarantee physical conservation in the coupling computation. Because there is no rigorous research that gives robust guidance on the various CFD schemes that must be obtained before the fine-mesh coupling computation, this work presents a quantitative analysis of the CFD meshing and mapping schemes to improve the accuracy of the value and location of key physical prediction. Furthermore, the effect of the sub-pin scale coupling computation is also studied. It is observed that even the pin-resolved coupling computation can also create a large deviation in the maximum value and spatial locations, which also proves the significance of the research on mesh mapping and data transfer for CFD code in a coupling computation.

To obtain a high-quality mesh with good dihedral angles, we restrict the octree such that any pair of neighboring cells only differs by one level. To efficiently construct a restricted-octree and generate a volume mesh from the octree, we utilize a signed distance field of an object on its bounded workspace. The most important criteria of quality of meshing and contact of gears are the low level of noise and the sufficient dimensions and location of the contact. A new approach for determination of machine-tool settings for spiral bevel gears is proposed. The proposed settings provide a function of transmission errors, the desired location and orientation of contact. The function is able to absorb piece-wise linear functions of transmission errors that are caused by the gear misalignment and to reduce the gear noise. The determination of pinion machine-tool settings is based on the local synthesis of gears. A computer program for simulation of meshing bearing contact and determination of transmission errors for misaligned has been developed.
Accidental gaseous losses from industrial processes can pose considerable health and environmental risks but assessing their health, safety and environmental impact is problematic. Improved understanding and simulation of the dispersion of emissions in the vicinity of storage tanks is required. The present study aims to assess the capability of the turbulence closures and meshing alternatives in a commercially available CFD code for predicting dispersion in the vicinity of cubes and circular cylindrical storage tanks. The performance of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ and Reynolds Stress turbulence models and meshing alternatives for these cases are compared to experimental data. The CFD simulations are very good qualitatively and, in many cases, quantitatively. A mesh with prismatic elements is more accurate than a tetrahedral mesh. Overall the Reynolds stress model performs slightly better than the $k-{\varepsilon}$ model.
