  • In this paper, four apodization functions are proposed for silicon-on-insulator (SOI) strip waveguides with sidewall-corrugated gratings. The effects of apodization functions on the full width at half maximum (FWHM), the side-lobe level, and the reflectivity of the reflection spectrum are studied using the coupled-mode theory (CMT) and the transfer-matrix method (TMM). The results show that applying proposed apodization functions creates very good filtering characteristics. Among investigated apodized waveguides, the apodization functions of Polynomial and z-power have the best performance in reducing side-lobes, where the side-lobe oscillations are entirely removed. Four functions are also used for precise adjustment of the bandwidth. Simulation results show that the minimum and maximum values of the FWHM are 0.74 nm and 8.48 nm respectively. In some investigated functions, changing the apodization parameters decreases the reflectivity which is compensated by increasing the grating length.

  • In this work, equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in a microcanonical ensemble are performed to evaluate the friction coefficient of a Brownian particle (BP) in a Lennard-Jones (LJ) solvent. The friction coefficients are determined from the time dependent friction coefficients and the momentum autocorrelation functions of the BP with its infinite mass at various ratios of LJ size parameters of the BP and solvent, ${\sigma}_B/{\sigma}_s$. The determination of the friction coefficients from the decay rates of the momentum autocorrelation functions and from the slopes of the time dependent friction coefficients is difficult due to the fast decay rates of the correlation functions in the momentum-conserved MD simulation and due to the scaling of the slope as 1/N (N: the number of the solvent particle), respectively. On the other hand, the friction coefficient can be determined correctly from the time dependent friction coefficient by measuring the extrapolation of its long time decay to t=0 and also from the decay rate of the momentum autocorrelation function, which is obtained by time integration of the time dependent friction coefficient. It is found that while the friction coefficient increases quadratically with the ratio of ${\sigma}_B/{\sigma}_s$ for all ${\sigma}_B$, for a given ${\sigma}_s$ the friction coefficient increases linearly with ${\sigma}_B$.

  • IMPs are important to cells in functions such as transport, energy transduction and signalling. Three dimensional molecular structures of such proteins at atomic level are needed to understand such processes. Prediction of such structures (and functions) is necessary especially because there are only a small number of membrane protein structures determined in atomic resolution.(omitted)

  • We present an intelligent forging simulator AFDEX. The intelligent forging simulator is determined by the adaptive and optimal mesh generation technique and many intelligent application-oriented special functions which minimize the user-intervention during forging simulation. Of course, the solution accuracy should be optimized in the intelligent simulation. We have developed AFDEX to meet the requirement on intelligent simulation. Its characteristics are introduced with the help of typical application examples.

  • In this note a method of designing optimal vibration control based on Haar functions to control of bounce and pitch vibrations in engine-body vibration structure is presented. Utilizing properties of Haar functions, a computational method to find optimal vibration control for the engine-body system is developed. It is shown that the optimal state trajectories and optimal vibration control are calculated approximately by solving only algebraic equations instead of solving the Riccati differential equation. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the technique.

  • Variable selection algorithm for Sliced Inverse Regression using penalty function is proposed. We noted SIR models can be expressed as generalized eigenvalue decompositions and incorporated penalty functions on them. We found from small simulation that the HARD penalty function seems to be the best in preserving original directions compared with other well-known penalty functions. Also it turned out to be effective in forcing coefficient estimates zero for irrelevant predictors in regression analysis. Results from illustrative examples of simulated and real data sets will be provided.

  • Previous works using a Multi-population Genetic Algorithm have divided chromosome into two components, rule sets and membership functions. However, in this case bad rule sets disturb optimization in good rule sets and membership functions. A new method for a Multi-population Genetic Algorithm suggests three components, good rule sets, bad rule sets, and membership functions. To show the effectiveness of this method, fuzzy controller is applied in a Truck Backing Problem. Results of the computer simulation show good adaptation of the proposed method for a Multi-population Genetic Algorithm.

  • Optimal estimating functions for a class of autoregressive models with GARCH(1,1) error are discussed. The asymptotic properties of the estimator as the solution of the optimal estimating equation are investigated for the models. We have also some simulation results which suggest that the proposed optimal estimators have smaller sample variances than those of the Conditional least-squares estimators under the heavy-tailed error distributions.

  • In recent years wavelet methods have been focused on block shrinkage or thresholding approaches to accounting for the sparseness of the wavelet representation for an unknown function. The block shrinkage or thresholding methods have been developed in both of classical methods and Bayesian methods. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian approach to selecting wavelet basis functions at each resolution level without MCMC procedure. Simulation study and an application are shown.
