Design and Application of Nursing Simulation using Goal-based Scenario for Nursing Students (Goal-based Scenario를 활용한 간호시뮬레이션 수업설계 및 적용)

  • Purpose: This purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of educational design according to Goal-based Scenario constituent elements such as educational goals, mission, cover story, role, scenario operation, resources, and feedback in simulation training. Methods: The subjects of this study were 130 nursing students in their senior year who enrolled in the simulation exercise I course. They were divided into a total of 10 groups in which less than 20 students were assigned. In order to verify the effectiveness of the simulation training through Goal-based Scenario instructional design, a design of non-equality control group was carried out. Results: The results of this study were as follows: Critical thinking (t=1.81, p=.073) and problem solving ability (t=1.79, p=.076), course satisfaction (t=8.61, p<.001) and academic performance (t=5.48, p=.001) were supported. Conclusion: This study applied a Goal-based Scenario simulation program to present clear objectives for simulating training and to advance learning methods that are appropriate to the current education environment. In addition, this study has significance in presenting an instructional model for various simulated practice education and can be used as useful basic data related to simulated training education.

Development and Application of Simulation-based Nursing Education Program for Post-myomectomy Care in Nursing Students (간호 대학생의 시뮬레이션 기반 자궁근종절제술 후 간호교육 프로그램 개발과 적용)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and apply simulation-based nursing education program for post-myomectomy care in nursing students. Methods: One group pre-post design was utilized. One hundred and thirty two participants consisting of 66 nursing students 132 participants consisting of 66 nursing students team were recruited. The data were collected from March 2 to June 12, 2015. Eight hours of simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care was operated. Forty five items of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was developed and content validity was tested using the content validity index. Results: The total score of Clinical Competence Assessment Scale was 90 and mean score of it was 82 (SD 4.2). The item showing the lowest mean score was 'education for Foley catheter management'. Mean score of performance was 92.7%, education 90.2% and assessment 89.9% respectively. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it would be useful to use the simulation-based education program for post-myomectomy care for evaluating clinical performance in nursing students.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the effect of simulation-based education relevant to the care of patients with acute renal failure (ARF) for third-year nursing students. Methods: This study was a non-equivalent control pre-posttest design. Based on the clinical situation scenarios pertaining to patients with ARF, a simulation-based learning module was developed using Human Patient Simulator version 6 (HPS6) manufactured by Medical Education Technologies Inc. The pretest was conducted so as to evaluate the difference in prior knowledge and clinical competence between two groups. The control group consisted of 91 students during the 2010 academic year and the experimental group consisted of 94 students during the 2011 academic year. Data were analysed using SPSS/win 10.1. Results: In the experimental group, knowledge related to care for ARF patients was not significantly increased; however, clinical competence improved significantly for the experimental group. Conclusion: In conclusion, the simulation-based education program was effective in contributing towards the development of clinical competence. Increased development of clinical competence is vital for today's clinical environment where nursing professionals need the necessary knowledge, thinking, and performance skills to meet the needs of the hospital and their patients.

Effects of Simulation-based Clinical Reasoning Education and Evaluation of Perceived Education Practices and Simulation Design Characteristics by Students Nurses (간호학생을 위한 시뮬레이션기반 임상추론 교육의 효과 및 설계특성과 교육상황 인식 평가)

  • This single-blinded, nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of simulation education on clinical judgement, collaboration, communication skills, and perceived education practices and simulation design characteristics among student nurses in Korea. Participants were 47 students (19 in the experimental group and 28 in the control group) recruited by convenience sampling. The simulation based clinical reasoning education consisted of seven weekly, 120-minute high fidelity simulations. All participants completed the pretest and 7-week post measurements of a clinical judgment, collaboration, and communication skills with 4-week post measurement of collaboration, and participants in the experimental group provided a measurements of perceived education practices and simulation design characteristics. Data were analyzed using repeated measured ANOVA, and mixed linear model with SAS 9.2. Significant improvements were found in the experimental group for clinical judgment, collaboration, communication skill, and perceived education practices and simulation design characteristics. The study results show the impact of the perceived education practices and simulation design characteristics on facilitating the effectiveness of simulation education. The findings suggest a feasible and sound teaching method for student nurses and the need for further studies with a larger sample.

Development and Applicability Evaluation of an Emergent Care Management Simulation Practicum for Nursing Students (간호학생을 위한 응급상황관리 시뮬레이션 실습 교과목 개발 및 적합성 평가)

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the applicability of an emergent care management simulation practicum which is for enhancing nursing students' emergent care management competency based on the Nursing Education Simulation Model. Methods: One group pre-post experimental design was conducted for evaluation of the applicability of the simulation practicum. A convenient sample of 60 senior nursing students was participated. The simulation practicum was provided for 26 hours per student at the end of the first semester of senior year. Educational practices in simulation scale, simulation design scale and learning outcomes were measured. Higher positive correlations between variables represent applicability. Descriptive analysis, paired t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for data analyses. Results: Among contractual components of nursing education simulation model, educational practices in simulation and simulation design (r=.80, p<.010), learning outcomes (r=.71-.28, p<.050), simulation design and learning outcomes (r=.72-.30, p<.050) were significantly correlated. Critical thinking (t=-3.63, p<.050) and problem solving competence (t=-2.55, p<.050) were significantly increased by this simulation practicum. It represents the applicability of an emergent care management simulation practicum. Conclusion: This emergent care management simulation practicum was appropriate to enhance the nursing students' emergent care management coping competency.

Effects of simulation based education, for emergency care of patients with dyspnea, on knowledge and performance confidence of nursing students (호흡곤란 응급관리에 대한 시뮬레이션기반 교육이 간호학생의 지식과 수행자신감에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects on knowledge and performance confidence of nursing students in the emergency care of patients with dyspnea after simulation education using a human simulator. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. For the experimental group the human simulator was used to provide simulation. Also included were base learning with audio-visual material, explanations about simulation, using SimMan for human simulation, and debriefing. Pre and post-tests were conducted to compare differences in knowledge and performance confidence. Result: The (t=3.83, p<.000) than the control group. For the experimental group, the differences in pretest-posttest scores for knowledge (t=2.30, p=.025) and performance confidence (t=4.28, p<.000) were significantly higher than the experimental group had significantly higher scores for knowledge (t=3.03, p=.004) and performance confidence (t=3.83, p<.001knowledge (t=2.30, p=.025) and performance confidence (t=4.28, p<.000) were significantly higher than the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that for student nurses, knowledge and performance confidence in emergency care of patients with dyspnea improve with human simulator simulation education. Further study is suggested to develop other scenarios for emergency care and identify the effects of critical thinking and satisfaction when using human simulator simulation education.

Learning Strategies on International e-Trade Simulation Education (전자무역 시뮬레이션 교육의 학습전략)

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the learning strategies and learning styles of the undergraduates in international e-trade simulation education. The set of learning strategies are investigated and the analysis is made how learning styles could affect the learning strategies. The subjects of this study were 112 undergraduates majored in international trade and their classes were using e-trade simulation. It is found that the undergraduates' learning strategy level is not high because the simulation education is not common yet in e-trade classes. The levels of self-efficacy and positive attitudes have high level whereas the expression strategy has the lowest. Strong results were not found among undergraduates' learning styles by each of the 11 strategies except two cases. One is that the undergraduates who had experiences of e-learning have higher level of social strategy than those of non e-learning experience group. The other is that the more the students spend the time in the simulation class, the more they have positive attitudes. This study supports that the simulation can increase the effectiveness of e-trade learning.

The Current Use of Human Patient Simulators in Nursing Schools in Korea (간호교육에서의 환자시뮬레이션 교육 현황)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the current usage of high integration mannequin human patient simulators (hereafter HPS) in nursing education. Methods: Thirty-two faculty members in 11 nursing schools participated in this survey. the questionnaire consisted of some multiple-choice questions and open questions to collect data on the experience of faculty members with using HPS as well as quantitative information. Results: The faculty members who used HPS in their classes recognized the need to use simulation in nursing education. They identified the advantages of simulation education as promoting adaptation to the clinical environment(46.9%), promoting self-confidence(28.1%), promoting critical thinking(28.15), and making direct nursing skill practice available(28.1%). However, they considered the obstacles to the use of simulation in nursing education to be insufficient manpower(62.5%), insufficient time(40.6%), and difficulty in preparing a teaching strategy(34.4%). Conclusion: HPS is useful in nursing education, but systematic plans and policies regarding on its operation are needed to confirm its effectiveness. The results of this study generally provide a basic information for use of HPS in nursing education.

Utilizing Video vs Simulation Practice for Handoff Education of Nursing Students in Pediatric Nursing (간호대학생을 위한 시뮬레이션 기반의 아동간호 인수인계에 관한 동영상 실습교육과 시뮬레이션 실습교육의 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a model for handoff education for nursing students based on simulation using video and to identify educational effects of a simulated situation in pediatric care units. Methods: Data were collected from May 1 to 30, 2016. Participants were 84 senior nursing students in Seoul (video group: 43, simulation group: 41). Both groups were given a lecture and pre-briefing on handoff education. The simulation group had nursing practice on resolving health issues for respiratory distress using a high-fidelity baby simulator. The video group watched a video recording of a scenario based simulation, and used a summarized handoff situation to practice patient handoff to another student. Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups for handoff self-confidence, problem solving ability, handoff competence (self-assessment of students), or learning satisfaction. Self-confidence increased significantly in both groups. Handoff competency evaluated by the instructor was higher in the video group compared to the simulation group (t=2.33, p=.022). Conclusion: Nursing student education for handoff practice utilizing a video in the pediatric unit was more cost effective. Therefore, it could be a useful educational method for students in learning patient handoff practices and helpful for related research.

Nursing students' experiences in virtual simulation practice (간호대학생의 가상 시뮬레이션 실습 경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning of nursing students' experiences in virtual simulation practice. Methods: The participants were six nursing students who have experience in a virtual simulation. Data were collected from August to September 2019 through a focus group interview. Giorgi's phenomenological method was used for analysis. Results: The study results revealed 3 constituents and 6 sub-constituents that are essential for nursing student's experiences in a virtual simulation. The three constituents were: "Chaos in the virtual reality", "The process of adjusting to chaos", and "Becoming an independent nurse in a safe virtual reality". Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions are made. Results suggest the development of virtual simulations in Korean, the use of simulations as a group activity first, and the use of simulation between lecture and practice or in the regular curriculum. The results of the study can be used as primary data for providing virtual simulation in nursing education.
