Gravity, magnetic and VLF surveys were conducted to investigat the structural stability and hazards associated with the Ubong landfill in Pohang City, which has been built to dump industrial wastes. In 1994, the collapse of a bank happened in the 6th landfill site due to sudden heavy rain, and a large quantity of waste materials flowed out to the nearby landfill sites, factories and roads. We used $10{\times}10m$ resolution DEM data for gravity reductions. The maximum variation of the terrain effect in the survey area is about 0.5 mgal and the terrain effect is large in the vicinity of bank boundary. The Bouguer gravity anomaly map shows the effect due to the variatino of thickness and type of waste materials. The small negative gravity anomaly increases from the 9th site to the 6th site. The small negative gravity anomaly of the 9th site reflects the relatively shallow dumping depth of average 14.5 m in this site and increased density of waste materials by the repeated stabilization process of soil overlaying. The 6th site is located at the center of the former valley and rainfall and groundwater are expected to flow from south-east to north-west. Therefore, considering the previous accident of mixing waste and bank materials at the north-west boundary of the landfill, there may be some environmental problems of leakage of contaminated water and bank stability. The complex inversion technique using Simulated annealing and Marquardt-Levenberg methods was applied to calculate three-dimensional density distribution from gravity data. In the case of 6th site, it is apparent that the landfill had been dumped in four sectors. However, most part of the 9th site and showed that high magnetic industrial wastes were concentrated in the 6th site. The result of magnetic survey showing low magnetic anomalies along the boundaries of two sites is similar to that of gravity data. The VLF data also reveals four divided sectors in the 6th site, and overall anomaly trend indicates the directio of former valley.
This study aims to develop the Flood Vulnerability Index (FVI) and apply it to the Bukhan River Basin. A1B and A2 scenarios of CGCM3 of IPCC were adopted and SDSM (Statistical Downscaling Model) was used to downscale the original data to the daily data. Driver-Presure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model was introduced to select all appropriate indicators for FVI and the daily rainfall-runoff model was simulated using HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran). Since FIV proposed in this study has a capability to quantify the potential flood vulnerability considering both present and future climate conditions, it is expected to be used for the comprehensive water resources and environmental planning.
One of the most difficult problems in estimating design floods is how to determine design storms. More specifically, the design storm problems turn into how to determine temporal and spatial distribution of the storm. In this study, Thiessen-Weighted BlocKing-type(TWBK) moving storms are suggested to resolve the design storm problems and their applicability is investigated. These moving storms are applied for 100-year 48-hour design flood estimation in Han river basin using a physics-based distributed rainfall-runoff model. Simulated floods from moving storms are compared with frequency-based ones estimated from observed floods.
Channel-bed of erosion and sedimentation, where eroded bed and bank materials re-deposit through the action of flow, is a natural phenomenon in alluvial systems. Analysis using a numerical model is important to understand the sediment transport mechanism associated with erosion and sedimentation near weirs and other hydraulic structures within riverine systems. The local riverbed change near a hydraulic structure (Changnyong-Haman multi-function weir in Nakdong river) has been analyzed in order to examine the effect of hydraulic structure on local bed change. A 2D numerical model (CCHE-2D) has been implemented to simulate the sedimentation and erosion over a reach (10 km) including the weir. For the calibration and verification of the model, the rainfall data from a real event (Typoon 'Maemi' in 2003) has been used for flow and stage simulation. And the simulated results show a good agreement with the observed data for whole domain. From the result, it was found that the installation and operation of weir can aggravate the local bed change caused from the flow field change and resulting redistribution of sediment.
Ammonia ($NH_3$) volatilization from a silty clay loam paddy soil applied with non, straight urea, and coated urea, respectively, under transplanting in Milyang, Korea from 2002 and 2003 was simulated by a Water and Nitrogen Management Model (WNMM). Based on the data from the in-situ measurements, $NH_3$ volatilization during the rice growth was 6.04% and 1.46% of the applied nitrogen (N) from straight urea and coated urea, respectively. The bulk aerodynamic approach in WNMM satisfactorily predicted the difference in $NH_3$ loss during the given rice growing seasons from the two urea fertilizers. $R^2$ for the correlation between the predicted and observed NH3 loss during the calibration year (2002) was 0.53 less than 0.68 of the application year (2003). This difference could be due to the weather condition such as heavy rainfall and temperature during the calibration year.

To assess the impact of climate change on water quality in an impounded river basin, this study estimated future air temperature and rainfall in the years of 2020, 2050 and 2080 by statistically downscaling the simulation results from two GCM models combined with two emission scenarios (A2 and B1). Both scenarios were selected from the Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) suggested by IPCC. The A2 scenario represents an extreme condition whereas the B1 scenario represents a clean and energy efficient condition which is similar to that of study basin. With the results of estimated climate factors and land use data, the discharge and the concentrations of BOD, TN and TP in the Andong dam basins were simulated using the SWAT model. The change in BOD concentration for the B1 emission scenario was greater than the A2 scenario in the annual increase range and the pollution level. The concentration of TN was decreased during March? June which is drought period and increased again afterward. In contrast to TN, the concentration of TP was generally decreased. The change in TP concentration was greater for the B1 scenario than the A2 scenario.
We analyzed characteristics of rainfall-runoff for the channel of Yongwon area made by a new port construction. And we conducted inundation analysis on the region of lower elevation near the coast. SWMM5 was calibrated with the storm produced by the typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004, and was verified with the storm from August 22 to August 22 in 2004. We performed hydraulic channel routing of Yongwon channel about typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004 by UNET model which is a hydraulic channel routing. The simulated runoff hydrographs were added to the new stream as lateral inflow hydrographs and a watershed runoff hydrograph was the upstream boundary condition. The downstream boundary condition data were estimated by the measured stage hydrographs. The maximum stage that was calculated by hydraulic channel routing was higher than the levee of inundated region in typhoon Megi. Thus we can suppose an inundation to have been occurred. We performed inundation analysis about typhoon Megi from August 19 to August 20 in 2004 and flood discharge of return period 10~150 years. And we estimated each inundation area. The inundation areas by return periods of storms were estimated by 3.4~5.7 ha. The causes of inundation are low heights of levee crests (D.L. 2.033~2.583 m), storm surges induced by typhoons and reverse flow through the coastal sewers (D.L. -0.217~0.783 m). A result of this study can apply to establish countermeasure of a flood disaster in Yongwon.
The objective of this study is to develop a short-term precipitation-streamflow coupling method for real-time river flow forecast. The coupled method is based on the RDAPS model for precipitation and atmospheric simulation and the SFM model for streamflow simulation. The selected study area is the 2,703-km$^2$ Soyang River basin with outlet at Soyang dam site. The rainfall-runoff event from 18 to 24 July 2003 is selected for the performance test of predicted precipitation and streamflow. It can be seen that the simulated basin-scale precipitation from the RDAPS can be useable as an input for SFM hydrologic model. Short-term hydrometeorological simulations using the RDAPS and SFM model were well captured important hydrometeorological characteristics in this study area. It is concluded that atmospheric precipitation forecast would be useful for streamflow forecast.

The validity of an unsteady two-dimensional(2-D) numerical hydrodynamic and pollutant dispersion model(2DNHPDM) was evaluated using the data obtained from I-sa streams in Sooncheon, Chonnam, during rain-fall run-off. Field observations was conducted for 35 hours during the 10 hours rainfall event on 7th May 2005. The water level, 2-D velocity, flow field, and COD at seven points selected along the river were measured at intervals of one hour. The model was applied to describe two-dimensional movement of dissolved pollutants in meandering non-uniform river. Major physical processes affecting the lateral and horizontal mixing of the river flow were simulated. The model was proved effective in describing the hydrodynamics and dispersion of the river pollutants from its major tributaries as well as non-point sources.
Relationships between soil saturated hydraulic conductivity ($K_s$) and porosity (${\phi}$) have been developed over many years; however, use of these relationships for evaluating rain-induced seals is limited mainly because of difficulties in estimating seal pore-size characteristics. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the $K_s$ of soil surface seals over a range of thicknesses, where seal thickness was determined using a High-Resolution-Computed-Tomography (HRCT) scanner, and to investigate relationships between $K_s$ and ${\phi}$ of developing seals in samples with equivalent diameters (e.d.) ${\geq}15\;{\mu}m$. A Mexico silt loam soil was packed to a bulk density (${\rho}_b$) of $1.1\;Mg\;m^{-3}$ in cylinders 160-mm i.d. by 160-mm long and subjected to $61-mm\;h^{-1}$ simulated rainfall having a kinetic energy (KE) of $25\;J\;m^{-2}\;min^{-1}$ for 7.5, 15, 30, and 60 min to create a range in seal development. Thicknesses of the seal layers were determined by analysis of HRCT images of seals. The $K_s$ values of the seals were estimated using an effective $K_s$ value ($K_{s-eff}$). The $K_s-{\phi}$ relationship was described by a Kozeny and Carmen equation, $K_s=B{\phi}^n$; where B and n are empirical constants and n = 31. This approach explained 86% of the variation between $K_s$ and ${\phi}$ within the soil seals. Knowledge of surface seal information and hydraulic conductivity can provide useful information to use in management of sites prone to sealing formation.
