  • The simplex method requires basis update in each iteration, which is the most time consuming process. Several methods have been developed for the update of basis which is represented in LU factorized form, such as Bartels-Golub's method, Forrest-Tomlin's method, Reid's method, Saunders's method, etc. In this research, we compare between the updating methods in terms of sparsity, data structure and computing time issues. The analysis is mainly based on the computational experience.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develope a large-scale simplex method program LPAKO. Various up-to-date techniques are argued and implemented. In LPAKO, basis matrices are stored in a LU factorized form, and Reid's method is used to update LU maintaining high sparsity and numerical stability, and further Markowitz's ordering is used in factorizing a basis matrix into a sparse LU form. As the data structures of basis matrix, Gustavson's data structure and row-column linked list structure are considered. The various criteria for reinversion are also discussed. The dynamic steepest-edge simplex algorithm is used for selection of an entering variable, and a new variation of the MINOS' perturbation technique is suggested for the resolution of degeneracy. Many preprocessing and scaling techniques are implemented. In addition, a new, effective initial basis construction method are suggested, and the criteria for optimality and infeasibility are suggested respectively. Finally, LPAKO is compared with MINOS by test results.

  • This study presents design optimization of spot welded structures to attain maximum strength by using the Nelder-Mead (Simplex) method. It is the main idea of the algorithm that the simulation run is executed several times to satisfy predefined convergence criteria and every run uses the starting points of the previous configurations. The material and size of the sheet plates are the pre-assigned parameters which do not change in the optimization cycle. Locations of the spot welds, on the other hand, are chosen to be design variables. In order to calculate the objective function, which is the maximum equivalent stress, ANSYS, general purpose finite element analysis software, is used. To obtain global optimum locations of spot welds a methodology is proposed by modifying the Nelder-Mead (Simplex) method. The procedure is applied to a number of representative problems to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method. It is shown that it is possible to obtain the global optimum values without stacking local minimum ones by using proposed methodology.

  • This research aimed to compare the detection methods of Anisakis simplex in Sea fish by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and macroscopic inspection. We examined 18 Trichiurus lepturus, 11 Scomber japonicus, and 65 Todarodes pacificus collected from the retail markets in the areas of Uljin, Kyuonggi province and Seoul. As the result of examinations, we found that detection rate of Anisakis simplex by macroscopic observation was 89% in Trichiurus lepturus, 90.9% in Scomber japonicus, 32.3% in Todarodes pacificus. The detection rate of Anisakis simplex by PCR-RFLP was 77.7% in Trichiurus lepturus, 81.8% in Scomber japonicus, 26.1% in Todarodes pacificus. We could conclude that PCR-RFLP method of Anisakis simplex was more specific rather than macroscopic observation.

  • The power inequality ${\prod}_{k=1}^{N}\;{x}_{k}^{x_{k}}\;{\geq}\;{\prod}_{k=1}^{N}\;{p}_{k}^{x_{k}}$ holds for the points $(x_1,{\ldots},x_N),(p_1,{\ldots},p_N)$ of the simplex. We show this using the analytic method combining Frostman's density theorem with the strong law of large numbers.

  • Linear equations of motion for submersibles are one of the rest important design parameters, which are used as a governing equation for the shape design and the controller design. But, the estimated maneuvering coefficients in equations of motion by using empirical formulae, theoretical calculations or model tests might have some errors. Therefore the maneuvering coefficients should be verified from sea trial test. In this study, parallel extended Kalman filter method, Nelder & Mead Simplex method and genetic algorithm were applied to the parameter identification of roll maneuvering coefficients based on sea trial data. As a result, it was verified that Nelder & Mead Simplex method gave the most satisfactory results for the mathmatical models and the sea trial data used in this study.

  • This paper proposes a combinatorial method to compute the global and local solutions of optimization problem. The present hybrid algorithm is the synthesis of a genetic algorithm and a local concentrate search algorithm (simplex method). The hybrid algorithm is not only faster than the standard genetic algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find both the global and local optimum solutions. An optimization result is presented to demonstrate that the proposed approach successfully focuses on the advantages of global and local searches. Three numerical examples are also presented in this paper to compare with conventional methods.

  • The basic concept of the model is to minimize the error range between forecasted flood inflow and actual flood inflow, and forecast accurately the flood discharge some hours in advance depending on the concentration time(Tc) and soil moisture retention storage(Sa). Simplex method that is a multi-level optimization technique was used to search for the determination of the best parameters of RETFLO (REal-Time FLOod forecasting) model. The flood forecasting model developed was applied to several strom event of Yedang reservoir during past 10 years. Model perfomance was very good with relative errors of 10% for comparison of total runoff volume and with one hour delayed peak time.

  • This paper describes a combinational method to compute the global and local solutions of optimization problems. The present hybrid algorithm uses both a genetic algorithm and a local concentrate search algorithm (e. g simplex method). The hybrid algorithm is not only faster than the standard genetic algorithm but also supplies a more accurate solution. In addition, this algorithm can find the global and local optimum solutions. The present algorithm can be supplied to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) and to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. These factors play very important roles in designing a rotor-bearing system under the dynamic behavior constraint. In the present work, the shaft diameter, the bearing length, and clearance are used as the design variables.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for lip recognition. Lip model is built based on the concatenated gray level distribution model, and the recognition problem is simplified as the minimization problem of matching object function. The Down Hill Simplex Algorithm is used for the minimization with the proposed novel method for setting initial condition, which can refrain Iteration from converging to local minima. The proposed algorithm shows extracting lip shape from the test image where Active Shape Model fails.
