  • Survey research, data is commonly collected through a sample design with complex design features that allow the relative efficiency on the precision of an estimator to be measured using the concept of the design effect compared to simple random sampling as a reference design. This concept is most useful when the design effect can be expressed as a function of various design features. We propose a design effect formula suitable under a stratified multistage sampling by generalizing Gabler et al. (1999, 2006)'s approaches for multistage sampling. Its use can either guide improvement in the design efficiency when in design stage or enable the evaluation of the adopted design features afterwards.

  • A number of estimation of distribution algorithms have been proposed that do not use explicitly crossover and mutation of traditional genetic algorithms, but estimate the distribution of population for more efficient search. But because it is not easy to discover higher-order correlations of variables, lower-order correlations are estimated most cases under various constraints. In this paper, we propose a new estimation of distribution algorithm that represents higher-order correlations of the data and finds global optimum more efficiently. The proposed algorithm represents the higher-order correlations among variables by building random hypergraph model composed of hyperedges consisting of variables which are expected to be correlated, and generates the next population by Bayesian sampling algorithm Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can find global optimum and outperforms the simple genetic algorithm and BOA(Bayesian Optimization Algorithm) on decomposable functions with deceptive building blocks.

  • For a sensitive survey in which the population is composed by several strata with quantitative attributes, we present an additive stratified quantitative attribute randomized response model which applied stratified random sampling instead of simple random sampling to the models of Himmelfarb-Edgell's additive quantitative attribute model and Gjestvang-Singh's. We also establish theoretical grounds to estimate the stratum mean of sensitive quantitative attributes as well as the over all mean. We deal with the proportional and optimal allocation problems in each suggested model and compare the relative efficiency of the suggested two models; subsequently, Himmelfarb-Edgell's model is more efficient than Gjestvang-Singh's model under the condition of stratified random sampling.

  • An adaptive estimation and testing method is proposed for comparing dispersions among several ordered groups. Based upon the large sampling theory for nonparametric quartile estimators, we derive the order restricted estimators and construct a simple test statistic. This test statistic has a mixture of several chi-square distributions as its asymptotic null distribution. The proposed test is illustratively applied to survival time data for the patients with carcinoma of the oropharynx.

  • The single sensor technique reconstructing phase currents from the dc-link current without phase current sensors in proposed. When the duration of active vector is too short for the snubber current to reduce, the dc-link current including the snubber current gives large detection error. The solution is presented by analyzing the snubber current and modifying the switching sequences. This scheme is simple, requires only one sampling a period and has good results for detecting the phase currents.

  • In this paper, attitude control of autonomous system using bike based on variable structure control is discussed. Variable structure control is more than a promising technique in the field of nonlinear control. It permits the realization of very robust and simple regulators, with appealing sliding mode characteristics especially if the considered dynamics requires a very short sampling time. We derive dynamic equation of it and demonstrate that the designed controller stabilizes attitude simultaneously regardless of wheel position by computer simulation.

  • This study models mobile communication channels as a discrete finite Markovian process, and Markovian jump linear system having parallel Kalman filter type is applied. What is newly proposed in this paper is an equation for obtaining the transition matrix according to sampling time by using a weighted Gaussian sum approximation and its simple calculation process. Experiments show that the proposed method has superior performance and reuires computation compared to the existing MJLS using the ransition matrix given by a statistical method or from priori information.

  • This paper presents a real-time MPEG-2 AAC decoding system, which can decode 2-channel main profile MPEG-2 AAC bitstream. The proposed system supports all decoding tools except for coupling channel tool, and provides sampling rates of 32, 44.1, 48 KHz. The system consists of a simple programmable DSP core and two hardwired logic modules that perform Huffman decoding and prediction for real-time implementation.

  • The Gibbs’ phenomenon for the classical Fourier series is known. This occurs for almost all series expansions. This phenomenon has been observed even in sampling series. In this paper, we show the existence of Gibbs phenomenon for trigonometric interpolating polynomial by a simple and different manner from the wok[4].

  • This paper defines an improvement for estimating the population mean of a study variable using auxiliary information and known values of certain population parameter(s), when there is a non-response in a study as well as on auxiliary variables. Under a simple random sampling without a replacement (SRSWOR) scheme, the mean square error (MSE) of all proposed estimators are obtained and compared with each other. Numerical illustration is also given.
