Background: In AIDS patients, the respiratory tract is one of the most frequently involved site of by an opportunistic infection, and an even common, casual pulmonary infection manifests in a peculiar ways in AIDS patients. In Korea, because of the low prevalence of AIDS, there is insufficient data compared with other Southeast Asian counties. However, considering the sexual behavior of the younger generation, it is expected that it will not be long before AIDS becomes a major public health issue in Korea. This study examined the clinical manifestation of HIV positive people and AIDS patients. The pulmonary manifestion of HIV-positive was evaluated. This study focused on the differences in the clinical manifestation between AIDS patients with pulmonary disease and simple HIV positive people. The characteristics of common pulmonary infections in AIDS patients were also analyzed. Method: The medical records of 28 HIV positive patients who visited the hospital of ChungAng University Hospital from January, 2001 to February, 2006 were analyzed retrospectively. Result: Twenty-seven patients out of 28 HIV positive patients were male and the average age was 40.6(23-65). Patients in their thirties were most commonly affected. Elven patients had pulmonary diseases. Pulmonary tuberculosis (4 cases) and pneumocystis pneumonia (4 cases) were the most common respiratory infection. One patient showed a peculiar type of systemic cryptococcus. which was accompanied by lung and pleural dissemination. The CD4+lymphocyte count of patients with a pulmonary infection was significantly lower in patients with a pulmonary manifestation than those with only a HIV infection ($79.5/mm^3$ vs $400/mm^3$, respectively)(p<.05). Patients with pulmonary disease were in a more severe immunosuppressive state. There were 4 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, 4 with pneumocystis pneumonia, 4 with secondary syphilis, 2 with primary syphilis, and 2 with HZV infection. The average CD4 lymphocyte counts was $56/mm^3$ in those with pulmonary tuberculosis, $42/mm^3$ in those with pneumocystis pneumonia, and $455/mm^3$ in those with secondary syphilis. Conclusion: This study examined the clinical manifestation of HIV positive patients, particularly AIDS patients with pulmonary disease, A more severe immunosuppressive status was observed in HIV-related pulmonary compared with those with HIV-related extrapulmonary disease, and the frequency of pulmonary tuberculosis in pulmonary disease was higher than expected. Respiratory infection in AIDS manifest in uncommon ways e.g. disseminated cryptococcosis involving the lung and pleura. Evidently, AIDS patients with a respiratory infection have a more severe form of immunosuppression than those with a simple HIV infection. As expected, patients with a pulmonary infection were in a more severe immunosuppressed state than those with a simple HIV infection. Opportunistic infections can show peculiar clinical presentations in AIDS patients.

Purpose: In the context of COVID-19, studies evaluating the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control are relevant due to their high occupational exposure and risk, as well as their responsibility for disseminating information and good practices. This study evaluated the adherence of dentists and dental students to infection control in the oral radiology field in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic on different continents. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study involved individuals who performed intraoral radiographic examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Questionnaire on Infection Control in Oral Radiology was administered virtually using a Google Form. Participants from different continents(the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania) were recruited. Data were subjected to descriptive analysis and simple and multiple binary regression (5%). Results: There were 582 valid answers, and 68.73% of the participants were from the Americas, 18.90% from Europe, and 12.37% from Asia. The median score for infection control protocols was 94 points for dental students and 104 points for dentists, and participants below the median were considered to have low adherence to infection control in oral radiology. Low access to infection control was found for 53.0% of dentists in the Americas, 34.0% from Europe, and 26.9% from Asia. Conclusion: The adherence to infection control protocols in oral radiology was low even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results may help improve the awareness of students and professionals, since oral radiology routines have the potential for transmitting COVID-19.
The present study was undertaken to identify the species of nematodes and determine infection state of small intestinal nematodes from dogs in Taegu area. One hundred and eleven healthy dogs which were 8 months old or more were examined by means of autopsy from September to November, 1993. All of the worms in small intestine were collected and preserved in 10% formalin solution. The worms were cleared in the lactophenol solution and examined by stereomicroscope and lightmicroscope. The result obtained were summarized as follows : Fifty three dogs(47.7%) out of the 111 experimental dogs were infected with small intestinal nematodes. Hookworm infection was recognized in 30(27.7%) dogs. All of the hookworms were identified morphologically as Ancylostoma caninum which had 3 pairs of ventral teeth, a pair of triangular dorsal teeth and a pair of centrolateral teeth. No Uncinaria stenocephala infection was detectable. Roundworm infection was recognized in 37(33.3%) dogs. Twenty one(18.9%) dogs were infected with Toxascaris leonina which had characteristic dorsal lips, paired spicules and a simple tail without process. The individual worm burden of the infected dogs ranged from one to 361 with mean of 25.5%. Among them 0~358(mean $17.8{\pm}30.66$) were Ancylostoma caninum, 0~18(mean $1.6{\pm}3.44$) were Toxocara canis and 0~60(mean $6.0{\pm}12.05$) were Toxascaris leonina. Single infection with Ancylostoma caninum, Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina were observed in 16(14.4%) dogs, in 9(8.1%) dogs, and in 11(9.9%) dogs respectively. Double infection with Ancylostoma caninum plus Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara canis plus Toxascaris leonina occurred in 5(0.5%) and in 3(2.7%) dogs respectively. Triple infection with Ancylostoma caninum plus Toxocara canis plus Toxascaris leonina occurred in 7(6.3%) dogs.
An epidemiological study was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection among the primary (and infant) school schildren in Ysngyang-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do. During the period from 2 to 14 December 1983, a total of 2,227 school children in 13 schools were examined one time by means of scotch-tape anal swab technique with a simple questionaire study on perianal itching, enuresis and school record. The results are as follows: 1. The overall egg Positive rate was 64.1% and the rate ranged from 46.6 to 86.7% by schools. 2. The egg positive rates of boys and twirls were 60.5 and 68.0% respectively and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.005). 3. There was noted a tendency of decrease in prevalence by increase of the age of children. 4. It was revealed that perianal itching and school record were significantly correlated with E. vermicularis infection (P<0.05) while not in case of enuresis (P>0.1).
Dysphagia is common symptom in patients with advanced esophageal cancer, which is not to be resected surgically. Especially when esophagorespiratory fistula is complicated, it leads to rapid deterioration and death due to pulmonary infection. Esophageal intubation relieves dysphagia as simple surgical execution and offers rapid effectiveness. For six patients with inoperable esophageal cancer including three esophago-respiratory fistulas, the palliative esophageal intubation was performed in Korea Cancer Center Hospital, in 1988. Traction technique via high gastrotomy with Celestin tube was used. Adequate palliation of dysphagia was achieved in 5 patients, but wound infection was developed in 2 patients, tube migration in 2 patients, and 2 died in hospital due to sepsis on the 16th and 42nd postoperative day, respectively. In 3 patients with esophagorespiratory fistula complicated after radiation therapy, the intubation was performed urgently and the result was satisfactory in 2 of them that the fistula was occluded successfully and aspiration or pulmonary infection was prevented.

Once a submasseteric space infection is diagnosed, the key to resolving the infection is via surgical intervention to evacuate the pus. Although it is possible and occasionally practical to drain the submasseteric space via an intraoral approach, an extraoral approach may sometimes be required. Surgeons have encountered complications such as facial nerve damage during extraoral incision and drainage procedures, and they have felt that extraoral dissection was very difficult. As such, an easier and simpler technique is needed. Our department recently modified various drainage techniques for submasseteric space abscesses. Damage to the marginal branch of the facial nerve did not occur, and this technique was very simple and rapid, such that a novice physician could perform this procedure. This modified technique was possible with trismus and under local anesthesia. After intraorally checking the position of the drain, the intraoral wound is closed with an absorbable suture and the drain is fixed to the extraoral skin. When a masseteric space infection is diagnosed, multiple space involvement is ruled out, and dependent drainage is required, this modified drainage technique can be useful.

This study was a cross-sectional reaserch that analyzed the factors that most affect COVID-19 knowledge in nursing college students who are relatively at high risk for recent prevalence of COVID-19 exposure in relation to clinical practice of nursing college students. A total of 249 nursing students participated in this study, 93 male students and 156 female students. The period for collecting data from structured questionnaires was from October 1 to October 20, 2021. The collected data were frequency analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, simple regression analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. As a result of the analysis, infection prevention behavior(𝛽=0.06, p=0.006) had the most influence on COVID-19 knowledge, and the second was professional intuition(𝛽=-.162, p=0.018). Based on the results of this study, in order to improve the knowledge of COVID-19 among nursing students, it is proposed to develop an infection prevention behavior education program and a professional intuition improvement program.
The microsporidian infection with Nosema bombycis, reconfirmed its high virulence and transovarial tranmissibility, however, the characteristic symptom of the spots like pepper grains on the diseased larval skin was no more recognized by present varieties of the silkworm. Transovarial transmission rate detected from moth was above 90% in dead eggs or dead larvae in the rearing by mulberry leaves, 80% in the newly hatched larvae starved to death. Transovarially transmitted N. bombycis was easily observed from dead eggs and larvae, and were suggested an individual inspection of a few of dead eggs for detection of the pathogenic spores. The progeny population provided indicative factors on the sampling of predictive and corrective inspection. The higher concentration of N. bombycis spores included in the hindabdormal part of infected moth, applicative on the simple method of indivisual moth inspection. For the predictive inspection of growned 5th-instar larvae, N. bombycis infection was detectable without microscopic observation by the unique symptom of turbid milky-white spots on the silk gland. Inspection of the meconia artificially discharged from silkworm moth, was also succesful of microscopic observation before crossing, without killing or homogenize the moths. The results provided a basis of rational methods for the inspection of N. bombycis infection of the silkworm.
Mucoceles of the minor salivary glands are the most common cystic lesions affected the oral mucosa. They are believed to be the result of trauma to the salivary duct caused, for example, by biting the lip, cheek, or tongue. Surgical excision has been the most common treatment for these lesions, but occasional recurrences develop after excision because surgical trauma may damage the surrounding minor salivary glands Although various alternative nonsurgical approaches, such as steroid infection, application of gamma-linolenic acid, have also been reported, they are not used routinely, Lasers, particularly the carbon dioxide laser, have been used in the management of mucoceles. Although this treatment requires specialized equipment. Cryotherapy is another effective nonsurgical method for treating mucoceles. Clinically, cryotherapy has primarily been applied to the treatment of leukoplakia and hyperplastic, granulomatous, vascular, and pigmented lesions. Limited information, however, is available on the application of cryotherapy in salivary gland lesions, including mucoceles. A simple and easy cryotherapy to treat a mucocele on the lower lip is described. A 25 years old female patient with a mucocele on the lower lip was treated by direct application of liquid nitrogen with a cotton swab. The lesion was exposed to 4 or 5 cycles composed of freezings of 10-30 s and thawings of double the freezing times. No anesthesia was required. The lesion nearly disappeared without scar 10 days after the cryotherapy. Cryotherapy has become an established nonsurgical method, characterized by its simple application, therapeutic effectiveness, painless during the procedure and low incidence of secondary infection and hemorrhage.
An attempt to confirm the associations of some selected risk factors of HBV infection and measure their risks, a cross-sectional study with 1,209 urban office workers was carried out. For the study, a simple questionnaire which contained several questions on personal experience and behaviors on several known selected risk factors of HBV infection was applied to each subject, and the Hepatitis B virus surface antigen and its antibody were checked by RPHA and PHA method, respectively. Risk factors chosen for this study were experience of blood transfusion and personal contact variables, such as frequencies of eating-out, drinking after office hours, going to tea room, sharing cigarettes, etc. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The proportion of HBsAg positive was 10.6%, and total HVB infected including the Anti-HBs positive cases without vaccination was 44.2%. Both were higher in male than in female. 2. Frequent personal contact through glasses and dishes in eating-outs and drinkings turned out not to be a significant risk factor of Hepatitis B surface antigenecity. 3. Frequent visits to tea room was a significant risk factor of HBV infection which combined HBsAg positive cases and Anti-HBs cases who had not received HBV vaccination. The odds ratio was 1.56 4. Blood transfusion was not a significant risk factor of both HBsAg positive and total HBV infection. In summary, indirect oral contacts through eating-outs and drinkings was not significant risk factor in Korea at least between adults. Blood transfusion is no more major source of HBV infection in Korea probably because the adquate screening test of HBsAg for the blood donors is being made.
