  • Despite a widely-held belief that the finite element method is the method for the solution of solid mechanics problems, which has for 30 years dissuaded solid mechanics scientists from paying any attention to the finite volume method, it is argued that finite volume methods can be a viable alternative. It is shown that it is simple to understand and implement, strongly conservative, memory efficient, and directly applicable to nonlinear problems. A number of examples are presented and, when available, comparison with finite element methods is made, showing that finite volume methods can be not only equal to, but outperform finite element methods for many applications.

  • Multigrid methods finite element/finite volume methods and their convergence properties are reviewed in a general setting. Some early theoretical results in simple finite element methods in variational setting method are given and extension to nonnested-noninherited forms are presented. Finally, the parallel theory for nonconforming element[13] and for cell centered finite difference methods [15, 23] are discussed.

  • In the shape optimization based on the finite element method, the accuracy of finite element analysis of a given structure is important to determine the final shape. In case of a bending dominant problem, finite element solutions by the full integration scheme are not reliable because of the locking phenomenon. Furthermore, in the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline: therefore, we cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate. We approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two-dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element have improved the optimization results.

  • Several finite element models for the leak-before-break (LBB) assessment of overlay dissimilar metal weldment were constructed and analyzed to develop a simple finite element modeling method. The J-integral, crack opening displacement (COD) and J-integral distribution along the crack front in thickness direction due to the applied moment were obtained from the analysis results of the constructed finite element models, and studied compared to the previous literatures. It is concluded that the modeling with base material only is simple and produces a slightly conservative results compared to the complex modeling composed with weld metal and base metal in the calculation of J-integrals and COD values which are used for the calculation of fracture toughness and postulated leakage crack length respectively.

  • A simple finite element approach to predicting deformed shape and load-deflection curve of elastomers is presented in this paper. The method is based on several simplifications in deformation pattern and material behavior. The conventional updated Lagrangian approach is employed together with material data obtained by a simple tension test. The presented approach is verified through comparison of predicted results with experimental ones and applied successfully to shape design of various elastomers for shock, vibration and noise control. The advantage of the presented approach lies in easiness, simplicity and accuracy enough for engineering application.

  • As computer power is increased, refined finite element models are employed for structural analysis. However, it is difficult and expensive to use refined models in the design stage. The refined models especially cause problems in the preliminary design where the design is frequently changed. Therefore, simplified models are needed. The simplification process is regarded as an empirical technique. Simplified and equivalent finite element model of a structure has been studied and used in the preliminary design. A general approach to establish the simplified and equivalent model is presented. The generated simple model has satisfactory correlation with the corresponding refined finite element model. An optimization method, the Goal Programming algorithm is used to make the simple model. The simplified model is used for the design change and the changed design is recovered onto the original design. The presented method was verified with three examples.

  • In this paper, we investigate the effect and the importance of the accuracy of finite element analysis in the shape optimization based on the finite element method and improve the existing finite element which has inaccuracy in some cases. And then, the shape optimization is performed by using the improved finite element. One of the main stream to improve finite element is the prevention of locking phenomenon. In case of bending dominant problems, finite element solutions cannot be reliable because of shear locking phenomenon. In the process of shape optimization, the mesh distortion is large due to the change of the structure outline. So, we have to raise the accuracy of finite element analysis for the large mesh distortion. We cannot guarantee the accurate result unless the finite element itself is accurate or the finite elements are remeshed. So, we approach to more accurate shape optimization to diminish these inaccuracies by improving the existing finite element. The shape optimization using the modified finite element is applied to a two and three dimensional simple beam. Results show that the modified finite element has improved the optimization results.

  • The offshore installation units may be subjected to various accidental loads such as collision from supply vessels, impact from dropped objects, blast load from gas explosion and thermal load from fire. This paper deals with the design and strength evaluation method of the stiffened plate structures in response to a blast load caused by a gas explosion accident. It is a comprehensive review of various items used in actual project such as the size and type of the explosive loads, general design procedure/concept and analysis method. The structural analyses using simple analysis methods based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis are applied to the particular FPSO project. Also validation studies on the design guidance given by simple analysis method based on SDOF model have also considered several items such as backpressure effects, material behavior and duration time of the overpressure. A good correlation between the prediction made by simple analysis method based on SDOF model and nonlinear finite element analysis can be generally obtained up to the elastic limit.

  • A Composite method of finite element and boundary integral methods is introduced to solve the magnetostatic field problems with open boundary. Only the region of prime interest is taken as the compution region where the finite element method is applied. The boundary conditions of the region are dealt with using boundary integral method. The boundary integration in the boundary integral method is done by numerical and analytical techniques repectively. The proposed method is applied to a simple linear problem, and the results are compared with those of the finite element method and the analytic solutions. It is concluded that the proposed method gives more accurate results than the finite element method under the same computing efforts.

  • In this paper, a conjugate heat transfer around cylinder with heat generation was investigated. Both forced convection and conduction was considered in the present finite element simulation. A finite element formulation based on SIMPLE type algorithm was adopted for the solution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We compared the finite element solution with that of Ansys fluent 12.0, in which finite volume method was employed for spatial discretization. It was found that the finite element method gave more accurate solution than Ansys fluent 12.0. Further, it was found that the maximum temperature inside cylinder is positioned at the rear side due to the flow separation.
