  • The aim of the present study is to investigate how the phonemic characteristics influence on the disfluencies of children and adults who stutter. The participants were 10 children(9 boys and 1 girl) and 10 male adults. After having the participants to read out the Paradise-Fluency Assessment(Sim, Shin & Lee, 2004) passages, each of the productions were divided into syllables and words, and then the frequencies and the ratios of their disfluenceis were analyzed according to the specified phonemic features. In terms of the frequency of the disfluency, the participants stuttered more in the words which start with consonant than vowel. But they showed more disfluencies in the words initiated with vowel than consonant when the ratio of each phoneme's presences were considered. There found different tendencies among the phonemic features related with their disfluencies occuring with ralatively high frequency or ratio. It was difficult to find out the exact relationships among the order of the sound acquisition, phonemic complexity, and the disfluencies. To study the exact influence of the phonemic features upon the disfluencies, it comes important to consider the frequency of the stuttering itself together with the ratio of the disfluencies in which the opportunity of the specific sound's presence was considered. To compare the results of the different studies which has similar purposes, it seems important to consider the tasks and the methodologies in depth.

  • This paper presents a new Nearest-Neighbors based weighted representation for images and weighted K-Nearest-Neighbors (WKNN) classifier to improve the precision of image classification using the Bag of Visual Words (BOVW) based models. Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) features are firstly extracted from images. Then, the K-means++ algorithm is adopted in place of the conventional K-means algorithm to generate a more effective visual dictionary. Furthermore, the histogram of visual words becomes more expressive by utilizing the proposed weighted vector quantization (WVQ). Finally, WKNN classifier is applied to enhance the properties of the classification task between images in which similar levels of background noise are present. Average precision and absolute change degree are calculated to assess the classification performance and the stability of K-means++ algorithm, respectively. Experimental results on three diverse datasets: Caltech-101, Caltech-256 and PASCAL VOC 2011 show that the proposed WVQ method and WKNN method further improve the performance of classification.

  • Korean stops are 3 system: aspirated, fortis, lenis, whereas English stops are 2 system: voiced, voiceless. Because in Korean, lenis stop is realized by slight aspirated voiceless stop, it is likely to produce English word initial voiced stop as voiceless stop. We divide subjects into three group-native, experienced, unexperienced- and investigate differences between group. VOT of experienced group IS same as native group, but VOT of unexperienced group is longer than native group. VOt of unexperienced group is 1.8 times than native group. We survey whether the height of following vowel influences VOT of initial stop. As a result, for all group, VOT followed by low vowel is shorter than VOT followed by high vowel. But this tendency is more salient in unexperienced group. For high vowel, VOT of unexperienced group is 2.05 times than native group, whereas for low vowel, it is just 1.55 times. The unexperienced pronounce well English word initial voiced stop followed by low vowel than high vowel. Samples are divided into two group according to type of coda consonant- nasal and voiceless stop. But average of VOT is similar and there is no significant difference between two groups. There is no influence by type of coda consonant. The average of phrases is compared to the average of isolated words. In the case of natives and experienced, there is no significant differences between phrases and words, but in the case of unexperienced, VOT of phrases becomes shorter than words. But VOT of unexperienced is still longer than native group.

  • This objectives of this research was to look into the actual state of fashion wearing purchase and makeup purchase to recognize the interrelationship between fashion and makeup styles by selecting words used for fashion image and cosmetic style. Such study can offer basic materials for choice of makeup style by each fashion style. Most information on fashion and cosmetics were obtained through the internet. However, a lot of information on cosmetics were also obtained through TV. Therefore, if fashion companies use both internet and TV for advertising, more effect on purchasing might be obtained. The design and color are important standards for selecting clothes. However, the quality and price of clothes are essential standards for purchasing cosmetics. Therefore, for fashion companies, they need to pay more attention to design and color. However, for cosmetic companies, they need to take notice of quality and price. When image words were extracted, fashion images showed the following words: natural, romantic, elegance, casual, and avant-garde, while makeup images showed romantic-casual, elegance, avant-garde, and natural. Regarding the interrelationship between fashion style and makeup style, natural and casual fashion style were harmonized with natural makeup while romantic fashion style was associated with romantic makeup. The fashion style of elegance and avant- garde was associated with elegance makeup. Therefore, similar images were found between fashion and makeup styles.

  • This study aimed to examine whether preconsonantal vowel shortening, which occurs in many languages, exists in Chinese. To this end, we compared 15 pairs of Chinese bi-syllabic words with intervocalic unaspirated/aspirated stops. The results revealed that (1) the effect of the feature aspiration of the following stop on the preceding vowel (V1) was neither significant nor consistent though V1 tends to be a little longer before an unaspirated stop; (2) the following unaspirated stop closure (C) was similar to or longer than its aspirated cognate; (3) the durational sum of V1 and C was longer when the stop is unaspirated, and V1 and C had no compensatory relationship; (4) Voice Onset Time (VOT) was significantly longer when the stop is aspirated than unaspirated; (5) the vowel (V2) following VOT was significantly longer when the stop is unaspirated, so the differentials in VOT were partially compensated; (6) despite the partial compensation, the sum of VOT and V2 was longer when the stop is aspirated; (7) words with an intervocalic aspirated stop were longer than those with its unaspirated cognate. It is concluded that while VOT is the most important factor for deciding the timing structure of Chinese words with intervocalic stops, closure duration is crucial for Korean and many other languages.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the emotion and sensibility of fashion words in terms of words types, such as loanword and Korean words, Hangul in fashion product label and fashion manufacturing industry. We surveyed 200 persons in their 20s using the questionnaire on the stimulus of product tag label and fashion words with 15 adjectives. Based on daily usage of foreign words in fashion market, we selected 1 item label in 3 forms: 1) Hangul label written in loan words 2) Label written in English and 3) Label written in Hangul and 3 fashion words in 2 forms 1) loanword and 2) Hangul. And the label types and fashion words were analyzed and investigated in terms of consumer's sensibility, preferences and estimated product price. The results are following: consumers preferred loanword label than Hangul label, and they preferred loanword in English than that in Korean. They evaluated loanword more positively, such as refinement, gorgeous and elegant, etc. and estimated the product price of loanword label as higher. But in the sensibility of 'familiar' and 'stability', Hangul label was not significantly different to loanword written in Hangul. That is, label written in English is the highest in all the evaluation, and loanword label written in Hangul is next, and Hangul label showed the lowest result. Consumers showed the evaluation differently between loanwords and Hangul according to their degree in fashion involvement. Consumers of high fashion involvement evaluated the sensibilities of 'refinement', 'elegant', and 'gorgeous' of loanwords as higher, whereas they had tendency to evaluate the sensibilities of 'familiar' and 'stability' of Hangul as higher or similar.

  • The reading processes of Chinese-Korean bilinguals, who have learned Korean as a foreign language, are expected to show different eye movement patterns compared to native Korean speakers. Moreover, these bilinguals may utilize knowledge similar to Chinese in processing Korean word meanings, especially for Sino-Korean words that share semantic relationships with Chinese, potentially processing them faster than native Korean words. This study observed whether Chinese-Korean bilinguals show the word frequency effect typically observed in Korean native speaker reading during Korean sentence reading. Additionally, eye-tracking experiments were conducted under conditions distinguishing between native Korean words and Sino-Korean words to investigate whether there is an advantage in processing Sino-Korean words. The results of the experiments showed that Chinese-Korean bilinguals did not show the same frequency effects as native Korean speakers, and they showed shorter response times in the Sino-Korean condition compared to the native Korean condition. Based on these findings, it is suggested that Chinese-Korean bilinguals, when learning Korean as a foreign language, employ strategies focused on meaning similarity akin to their native language vocabulary acquisition strategies, and they process Sino-Korean words faster than native Korean words, suggesting a potential advantage in learning and processing Sino-Korean vocabulary.

  • This paper aims to provide a guideline for modelling speaker identification and speaker verification by comparing voice similarities between brothers. Five pairs of brothers who are believed to have similar voices participated in this experiment. Before conducted in the experiment, perceptual tests were measured if the voices were similar between brothers. The words were measured in both isolation and context, and the subjects were asked to read five times with about three seconds of interval between readings. Recordings were made at natural speed in a quiet room. The data were analyzed in pitch and formant frequencies using CSL (Computerized Speech Lab), PCQuirer and MDVP (Multi -dimensional Voice Program). It was found that data of the initial vowels are much more similar and homogeneous than those of vowels in other position. The acoustic data showed that voice similarities are strikingly high in both pitch and formant frequencies. It was also found that the correlation coefficient was not significant between parameters above.

  • Patent information search is used for checking existence of earlier works. In patent information search, there are many reasons that fails to get appropriate information. This research proposes a method extracting alternative word candidates in order to minimize search failure due to keyword mismatch. Assuming that two words have similar meaning if they have similar co-occurrence words, the proposed method uses the concept of concentration, association word set, cosine similarity between association word sets and a ranking modification technique. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a manually extracted alternative word candidate list. Evaluation results show that the proposed method outperforms the document vector space model in recall.

  • This study is concerned with the bai su(背戍) of Koryo period which recorded in Kei Rim Yu Sa(鷄林類事). Results of this research can be summarized as follows : The record of Bai Su(背戍) in Kei Rim Yu Sa(鷄林類事) was correct. It was not a mistake in writing. Thus, this word(背戍) was used by the people of Koryo. The 背戍 of Koryo was related to Aramaic patash and Japanese byets or bats, バツ. It was found that 背戍 of Koryo was very similar to Aramaic patash, legging. It indicates that 背戍 was derived from Aramaic and it was a transliteration of patash. Thus, 背戍 was a borrowed word from Aramaic. Also it was found that 背戍 of Koryo and Japanese byets(ぺツ) or bats(バツ) showed a very close affininty with each other in phonetic value. These words had the same meanings of 襪 one another. It reveals that 背戍 of Koryo and Japanese byets of bats has the same origins. Japanese byets or bats were transliterations of 背戍 of Koryo and they were borrowed words from 背戍 of Koryo.
