Pyroelectric $Pb(Zr_{0.3}Ti_{0.7})O_3$ (PZT30/70) thin film IR detectors has been fabricated and characterised. The PZT30/70 thin film was deposited onto $Pt/Ti/Si_3N_4/SiO_2/Si$ substrate by the sol-gel process. Four different substrate conditions were studied for their effects on the pyroelectric responses of the IR detectors. The substrate conditions were the combinations of the Si etching and the Pt/Ti patterning. In the Si etched substrate, the $Si_3N_4/SiO_2$ composite layer was used as silicon etch-stop, and was used as the membrane to support the PZT pyroelectric film element as well. The measured pyroelectric current and voltage responses of detectors fabricated on the micro-machined thin $Si_3N_4/SiO_2$ membrane were two orders higher than those of the detectors on the bulk-silicon. For detectors on the membrane substrate, the Pt/Ti patterned detectors showed a 2-times higher pyroelectric response than that of not-patterned detectors. On the other hand, the pyroelectric response of the detectors on the not-etched Si substrate was almost the same, regardless of the Pt/Ti patterning. It was also found that the rise time strongly depended on the substrate thickness: the thicker the substrate was, the longer the rise-time.

Using intense pulsed ion beam evaporation technique, we have succeeded in the preparation of poly crystalline silicon thin films without impurities on silicon substrate. Good crystallinity and high deposition rate have been achieved without heating the substrate by using lEE. The crystallinity of poly-Si film has been improved with the high density of the ablation plasma. The intense diffraction peaks of poly-Si thin films could be obtained by using the substrate bias system. The crystallinity and the deposition rate of poly-Si thin films were increased by applying (-) bias voltage for the substrate.
In this work, we fabricated a gas-sensing device based on porous silicon(PS), and its I-V and C-V properties were investigated for sensing alcohol vapor. The structure of the sensor consists of thin Au/Oxidized porous silicon/porous silicon/Silicon/Al, where the silicon substrate is etched anisotropically to be prepared into a membrane shape. As the result, I-V curves showed typical tunneling property, and C-V curves were shaped like those of a MIS (metal-insulator- semiconductor) capacitor, where the capacitance in accumulation was increased with alcohol vapor concentration.
A two-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation has been used to investigate the effect of the reaction temperature on the formation of the silicon carbide conversion layer near the surface of graphite substrate The carbothermal reduction of silica is the reaction mechanism of silicon carbide formation on graphite substrate by chemical vapor reaction methods. The chemical composition of silicon carbide conversion layer gradually changes from carbon to silicon carbide because gaseous reactants diffuse through micropores within graphite substrate and react with carbon at the surface of inner pores. The simulation was carried out under the condition of reaction temperature at 1900K, 2000K, 2100K and 2200K for 500MCS. It was found from the results of simulation that the thickness of silicon carbide conversion layer increases with reaction temperature.

Aluminum induced crystallization of amorphous silicon was attempted by the aluminum substrate. To avoid the layer exchange between silicon and aluminum layer, Ni layer was deposited between these two layers by sputtering. To obtain the bigger grain of the crystalline silicon, wet blasted silica layer was employed as windows between the nickel and a-Si layer. Ni obtained after the annealing treatment at $520^{\circ}C$ was found to be a promising material for the diffusion barrier between silicon and aluminum. One way to obtain bigger grain of crystalline silicon layer applicable to solar cell of higher performance was envisioned in this investigation.

This paper presents a method to fabricate freestanding structures by (100) silicon anisotropic etching and nickel electroless plating. The electroless plating process is simpler than the electroplating, and provides good coating uniformity and improved mechanical properties. Furthermore, the (100) silicon anisotropic etching in KOH solution with being aligned to <100> direction provides vertical (100) sidewalls on etched (100) surface. In this paper, the effects of the nickel electroless plating condition on the properties of electroless plated metal structures are investigated to apply fabrication of micro structures and then various micro structures are fabricated by nickel electroless plating. And then, the structures are released by silicon anisotropic etching in KOH solution with a large gap between the structure and the substrate. The fabricated cantilever structures are $210\mum$. wide, $5\mum$. thick and $15\mum$. over the silicon substrate, and the comb structure has the comb electrodes which are $4\mum$. wide and $4.3\mum$. thick separated by$1\mum$. It is released by silicon anisotropic etching in KOH solution. The gap between the structure and the substrate is $2.5\mum$.
This paper presents a polarization switching antenna integrated with silicon RF MEMS SPDT switches in the form of a package. A low-loss quartz substrate made of SoQ (silicon-on-quartz) bonding is used as a dielectric material of the patch antenna, as well as a packaging lid substrate of RF MEMS switches. The packaging/antenna substrate is bonded with the bottom substrate including feeding lines and RF MEMS switches by BCB adhesive bonding, and RF energy is transmitted from signal lines to antenna by slot coupling. Through this approach, fabrication complexity and degradation of RF performances of the antenna due to the parasitic effects, which are all caused from the packaging methods, can be reduced. This structure is expected to be used as a platform for reconfigurable antennas with RF MEMS tunable components. A linear polarization switching antenna operating at 19 GHz is manufactured based on the proposed method, and the fabrication process is carefully described. The s-parameters of the fabricated antenna at each state are measured to evaluate the antenna performance.

A thin-film transmission line (TFTL) employing a microstrip line/coplanar waveguide (ML/CPW) was fabricated on a silicon substrate for application to a miniaturized on-chip RF component, and the RF characteristics of the device with the proposed structure were investigated. The TFTL employing a ML/CPW composite structure exhibited a shorter wavelength than that of a conventional coplanar waveguide and that of a thin-film microstrip line. When the TFTL with the proposed structure was fabricated to have a length of ${\lambda}/8$, it showed a loss of less than 1.12 dB at up to 30 GHz. The improvement in the periodic capacitance of the TFTL caused for the propagation constant, ${\beta}$, and the effective permittivity, ${\varepsilon}_{eff}$, to have values higher than those of a device with only a conventional coplanar waveguide and a thin film microstrip line. The TFTL with the proposed structure showed a ${\beta}$ of 0.53~2.96 rad/mm and an ${\varepsilon}_{eff}$ of 22.3~25.3 when operating from 5 to 30 GHz. A highly miniaturized impedance transformer was fabricated on a silicon substrate using the proposed TFTL for application to a low-impedance transformation for broadband. The size of the impedance transformer was 0.01 mm2, which is only 1.04% of the size of a transformer fabricated using a conventional coplanar waveguide on a silicon substrate. The impedance transformer showed excellent RF performance for broadband.

Nano-scale fabrication of silicon substrate based on the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM) was demonstrated. A specially designed cantilever with diamond tip, allowing the formation of damaged layer on silicon substrate by a simple scratching process, has been applied instead of conventional silicon cantilever for scanning. A thin damaged layer forms in the substrate at the diamond tip-sample junction along scanning path of the tip. The damaged layer withstands against wet chemical etching in aqueous KOH solution. Diamond tip acts as a patterning tool like mask film for lithography process. Hence these sequential processes, called tribo-nanolithography, TNL, can fabricate 2D or 3D micro structures in nanometer range. This study demonstrates the novel fabrication processes of the micro cantilever and diamond tip as a tool for TNL using micro-patterning, wet chemical etching and CVD. The developed TNL tools show outstanding machinability against single crystal silicon wafer. Hence, they are expected to have a possibility for industrial applications as a micro-to-nano machining tool.

Characteristics of microcrystalline-silicon thin-films deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD) method were studied. There were optimum values of RF power density and $H_2$ dilution ratio $(H_2/(SiH_4+H_2))$; maximum grain size of about 35 nm was obtained at substrate temperature of 250 $^{\circ}C$ with RF power density of 1.1 W/$cm^2$ and $H_2$ dilution ratio of 0.91. Larger grain was obtained with higher substrate temperature up to 350 $^{\circ}C$. Grain size dependence on RF power density and $H_2$ dilution ratio could be explained by etching effects of hydrogen ions and changes of species of reactive precursors on growing surface. Surface-mobility activation of reactive precursors by temperature could be a reason of grain-size dependence on the substrate temperature. Microcrystalline-silicon thin-films that could be used for flat-panel electronics such as active-matrix organic-light-emitting-diodes are expected to be fabricated successfully using these results.
