  • We report that the crack-free organic-inorganic hybrid silica thin films were fabricated by sol-gel process using organometallic compounds as a precursor and that we have established very reproducible fabrication condition with systematic investigation of thickness and refractive index variations for various control parameters, such as, coating type, coating speed, chemical composition, prebake and postbake temperature. Additionally, we measured and compared the change of optical property with the UV exposure dose for three different kinds of photoinitiators. Furthermore, the fabrication of Ix4 MMI optical power splitter using the sol-gel thin film provides the possibility of various applications to the optical waveguide devices. vices.

  • Using tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses, we produce an optical waveguide and optical devices in transparent materials. This technique has the potential to generate not only channel waveguides, but also three-dimensional optical devices. In this paper, an optical splitter and U-grooves, which are used for fiber alignment, are simultaneously fabricated in a fused silica glass using near-IR femtosecond laser pulses. The fiber aligned optical splitter has a low insertion loss, less than 4㏈, including an intrinsic splitting loss of 3㏈ and excess loss due to the passive alignment of a single-mode fiber. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of the femtosecond laser writing technique by fabricating gratings at the surface and inside the silica glass.

  • Optical telecommunication has been growing at a rate that exceeds even the "Moore′s Law". However, while the electronic revolution has allowed everyone to have his/her own PC, the optical revolution is still confined to the long-haul network such that the individual end users are still connected to an electronic metro/access networks. However, given the rapid increase in the data traffic (e.g., multimedia), the optical edge that separates the individual end users from optical networks will eventually have to include the metro/acces networks. • A computer routine for personal computer(PC/AT class) is developed to analysize the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides whose cross sections are of semi circular and other typical shapes. The basic algorithm used in the routine is to convert the wave equation into a matrix equation by expanding the wave function in terms of simple harmonic functions. The matrix elements are a set of overlap integrals of sinusoidal funtions with appropriate weight given by the distribution of refractive index over the waveguide cross section. The eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the matrix is then computed via diagonalization. We explain some practical problems that arises when implementing the algorithm into the routine. By using this routine we analyze the mode characteristics of silica based optical waveguides of semi circular and some other typical cross sections.

  • The numerical alaysis of optical device, silicabased device, are presented. The purpose of this paper is to simulate and to design a 8-channel optical wavelength division multiplexer(OWDM) based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer(MZI) with wavelength spacing between channels Δλ=0.8 nm at central wavelength λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In initial condition fur simulating, we assumed as follows. A channel waveguide is made from silica based P-doped SiO2 core layers in order to coupling with a fiber easily and its core dimension was 6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$\times$6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The core and clad index of channel waveguide were 1.455 and 1.444, separately, at λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Where, the separation between channel waveguides in coupling region was 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As a result of analysis, a group mode index of channel waveguide was 1.4498370, was gained by Hermite-Gaussian Method(HGM). Also, the channel spacing was determined by the waveguide arm length difference and was Δλ=0.8 nm as like a proposed condition. The central wavelength of a designed-multiplexer was activated about wavelength λ=1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and we certificated that it can be used to 8-channel optical wavelength division multiplexer/demultiplexer.

  • As the radius of curvature of curved optical waveguide gets smaller, the loss increases at the junction of linear-curved waveguide by the cross sectional mode mismatch. The concept of lateral offset has been used widely to minimize it, and simple method of maximum matching has been efficient for most cases of silica waveguide with low optical confinement and large radius of curvature. Here, we analyzed that the propagation mode characteristics of the lateral offset and propagation mode characteristics of general case with effective index method and Airy function solution. As the normalized frequency varies, mode characteristics changes near the boundary of 1/V=0.7 and the simple matching of gaussian profile might give -35% of error at most. We proposed improved method with a new correction factor to improve the mode mismatch problem of conventional methods for general cases, and showed the convenience and feasibility of this method for the calculation of the lateral offset.

  • Boron-phoshor-silicate glass was fabricated on Si substrates by FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) The microstructrue of silica soot deposited at various conditon such as composition and substrate temperature was analysed by SEM. After consolidation the refractive index and composition of the silica layer were in-vestigated. For refractive index control B, P and Ge were used as additive elements while B and Ge oxides are easily mixed into $SiO_2$, P oxide($B_2O_3$) doping is difficult because of the volatile property due to low melt-ing point. Boron-phosphorous-silicate glass (BPSG) layer were fabricated using bertical torch and optimized flame temperature substrate temperature and distance of torch and substrate. P concentration of BPSG lay-er measured 3.3 Wt% and the consolidation temperature was lower than $1180^{\circ}C$. The measured refractive index of BPSG silica layer in $1.55\;\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength was $1.4480{\pm}1{\times}10^{-1}$ and the thickness was $22{\pm}1\;\mu\textrm{m}$.

  • There have been many investigations and researches on PLC type of optical amplifiers because they are convenient for mass production and also can integrate multi-functional devices into a single chip. In this research. the fabrication of optical waveguide made of Si/$Sio_2$ by FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) for passive integrated optical devices and $1.5\mu\textrm{m}$ optical amplifier by Solution Doping method, which is one of the method doping $Er^{3+}$ into the thin film, are mainly discussed.
