  • The calculation of the transmission loss of the silencers with complicated internal structures by the conventional BEM combined with the transfer matrix method is incorrect at best or impossible for 3-dimensional silencers due to its inherent plane wave assumption. On this consideration, we propose an efficient practical means to formulate algebraic overall condensed acoustic equations for the whole acoustic structure, where particle velocities on the domain interface boundaries are unknowns, and the solutions are used later to compute the overall transfer matrix elements, based on the multi-domain BEM data. The transmission loss estimation by the proposed method is tested by comparison with the experimental one on an air suction silencer with perforated internal structures installed in air compressors. The method shows its viability by presenting the reasonably consistent anticipation of the experimental result.

  • The silencers are used to attenuate noise generated by the exhaust fan for industrial processes. The types of silencers applied in this study are absorptive duct silencer, expansion chamber, absorptive chamber and resonator. This study was carried out to verify the attenuation by the various silencers and elements. As a result, the difference of attenuation between the calculation and the measurement was about 1-7㏈. The attenuation by absorptive duct silencer and absorptive chamber was negligible at frequencies below 250Hz. The expansion chamber should be used for low frequency applications where the absorptive duct silencer was Ineffective. The attenuation by resonator may be realised when the ratio of frequency to resonant frequency approaches 1.

  • This paper introduces an experimental study on the grazing incidence sound absorptions for duct silencers filed with a glass wool and consisted of a perforated panel. The experimental results are discussed in comparison with the normal incidence sound absorption. And also the transmission loss for duct silencers are measured and compared with the sound absorption performances. From the experimental results, it is shown that the resonance frequency bandwidth on the transmission loss and sound absorption coefficient for duct silencers has a good agreement.

  • The test facility has been manufactured to predict the dynamic insertion loss and the pressure drop for ducted silencers based on ISO 7235. The qualification test of the test facility is necessary for determining the dynamic insertion loss and the pressure drop of the test silencer, and is surveyed the reflection coefficient for an anechoic termination, the velocity profile near the upstream connection to the test silencer, the reduction of the system silencer and the limiting insertion loss due to the flanking sound transmission along the duct walls.

  • Acoustic performance of splitter silencers was investigated by using 3-dimensional commercial software and experiments. Flow resistivity of sound absorbing material was indirectly estimated by using an impedance tube setup and a curve fitting method. In addition the acoustic impedance of perforated plate was determined by an empirical formulation. Such properties have been used as input parameters in the commercial software. The prediction for a splitter silencer with 1000 mm length was compared with the experimental result. The numerical method is then applied to identify the effects of number of splitters, length of splitters, absorptive material density, and porosity of a perforated plate on the performance of the splitter silencers. As the number and length of splitter increases, the acoustic performance significantly increases. Although the increase of density of absorptive material also increase the acoustic performance, a change in the density over a certain level hardly affect it. The increase of porosity will enhance the performance especially at higher frequencies.

  • The noise level of the navigation bridge as well as topside of the superstructure is dominated by the exhaust gas noise of the high-powered main engine and generator engine of special purpose vessels. In the case of the noise radiated from the top of the funnel. the exhaust pipe can be fitted with a silencer to reduce the propagated noise level. This paper is prepared based on an experimental performance test results of the silencers for generator-engine exhaust gas noise with consideration of air velocity. Two silencers were examined to check the performance of noise reduction in cases of air velocity 0m/s and 32m/s. In the sound reduction test, 400mm and 600mm diameter pipe ducts equipped with an axial fan were used as exhaust gas pipe system in the actual ship. The test procedure and results are presented in detail.

  • This Study introduces the design of a reactive type silencer for reducing impulse noises emitted from a high voltage COS fuse of a transformer. When a high voltage COS fuse becomes a short circuit by the over current, the peak sound pressure level above 150dB(A) is generated at the distance of 2m from a COS Fuse. For the purpose of the reduction of impulse noise, in this study. the reactive type silencers have been utilized. The performance of noise reduction for them can be expressed by insertion loss. The reactive silencers have been tested for 23 different types with each different porosity, hole diameter and depth. From the experimental results, it is found that the reactive silencer has an excellent performance to greatly suppress the impulse noise. The one-stage, two-stage and three-stage reactive type silencers have been shown to have the insertion losses of about from 35dB (A) to 25dB(A).

  • High performance intake silencer with low pressure drop are developed for a household oxygen generator. First, the acoustic power of the target oxygen generator are experimentally evaluated according to ISO code. Then, the transmission loss of and the flow characteristics inside the existing intake silencer are predicted and analyzed. On a basis of these results, two intake silencers are proposed, which are designed to induce the swirling flow inside the intake silencer and thus to reduce the flow loss. The predicted TL and the pressure drop for these two new silencers are compared to the existing one, which shows that the proposed ones have higher TL as well as low pressure drop. The reason for these improvements are explained by investigating the flow characteristics of the new silencers in detail.

  • Recently the uncertainty has been made rapid progress in various fields of industry but the uncertainty measurement method of acoustical test (i.e. Insertion loss, Absorption ratio, Transmission loss etc,) hasn't been established. In this study, the uncertainty of measurement method for ducted silencers is carried out according to ISO 7235. The standard uncertainty factors are composed of sound pressure level, microphone sensitivity and pistonphone calibration in this measurement. Sound pressure level is type A evaluation of uncertainty, microphone sensitivity and pistonphone calibration are type B evaluation of uncertainty. The combined standard uncertainty is calculated by two type evaluation. The expanded uncertainty is expressed by the combined standard uncertainty multiply k value which is yield the effective degree of freedom.
