  • This paper presents the various analysis of the power system for operating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. In the analysis of the power system, summer load condition of 2011 is used. Especially, power flow, fault current, voltage and contingency of SIHWA tidal power plant area are analyzed by using PSS/E and there is no problem for the dynamic stability simulation. The new SIHWA tidal power plant is located in near metropolitan area where about 43% amount of the system load is consumed. Therefore, transmission losses are reduced. In addition, system marginal price can be lowered by generating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. The generation pattern of the SIHWA tidal plant is analyzed and the changes of generation are presented for various water levels by control of the rotor angle alpha and beta in water wheel generator.

  • This paper presents an optimal operating scheme by integrating Sihwa tidal power into NamSihwa systems. For optimal operation of NamSihwa systems, the sea levels of 1 minute interval using cubic interpolation based on the forecasted levels of high and low water are calculated. Especially, it is compared by three schemes to purchase total power from transmission system to purchase total power from tidal power system in time period that can generate tidal power and to purchase total power by comparing purchase costs from transmission system and tidal power system. The scheme may contribute to energy save in Korea that natural resources are lacking.

  • Tidal power generation plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It uses a tidal force generated by gravitational force between the moon, the earth, and the sun. The change of seawater height generates the tide-generating force, and the magnitude of the change is the tide level. The tide level change has the same period as the tide-generating force twice a day, every 29.5 days, every year, and every 18.6 years. Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station is Korea's first tidal power plant that began commercial power generation in August 2011 and has been accumulating a large volume of data on electricity production, power generation sales, sluice displacement, and tide levels. The purpose of this paper was to analyze the impact of the inefficiency factors affecting production and the tidal level change on tidal power generation and their characteristics using Sihwa Lake Tidal Power's operational performance data. Throughout this paper we show that tidal power generating operation is accurately predicting the trends of magnitude of tidal force to be periodical for each day. determining the drop to initiate the water turbine generator factoring the constraints on the operation of Sihwa Lake, and reflecting the water discharge through the floodgate and water turbine during the standby mode in the power generation plan to be in the optimal condition until the initiation of the next power generation can maximize power generation.

  • A numerical study to investigate the effect of intake vortex occurrence on the performance of an axial hydraulic turbine for generating tidal power energy in Sihwa-lake tidal power plant, Korea, is performed. Numerical analysis of the flow through an sxial hydraulic turbine is carried out by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes dquations with the shear stress transport turbulence model. In the real turbine operation, the vortex flows are occurred in both the side corners around the intake of an axial hydraulic turbine due to the interaction between the inflow angle of water and intake structure. To analyze these vortex phenomena and to evaluate their impacts on the turbine performance, the internal flow fields of the axial hydraulic turbines with the different inflow angles are compared with their performances. As the results of numerical analysis, the vortex flows do not directly affect the turbine performance.

  • In this study, we investigated changes in the macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat before and after the operation of a Tidal Power Plant (TPP). In order to investigate changes in the macrobenthic community structure, field surveys were conducted at eighteen stations in 4 transect lines every September from 2011 to 2015. Mean density of macrobenthos decreased to $116ind./m^2$ in 2015 from $1,602ind./m^2$ in 2011. While the mean density of macrobenthos has decreased, species richness and biomass have gradually increased. The species diversity and SEP (Shannon-wiener Evenness Proportion) have also gradually increased over time since the operation of the TPP. The macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat was divided into 4 groups on a yearly base. Before the operation of TPP, opportunistic species such as Neanthes succina and Polydora cornuta largely contributed to the structure of the macrobenthic community, while equilibrium species such as Periserrula leucophryna and Scopimera globosa contributed after the operation. With the operation of TPP, the macrobenthic community has rapidly recovered and this might be related to improvement in the quality of water and sedimentary environments as a result of an increase in water mass volume exchanged through the TPP gate.

  • This paper presents a method to calculate generation power for integrating Sihwa tidal power into power systems. The sea levels of 1 minute interval using cubic interpolation based on the forecasted levels of high and low water offered from Nori(National Oceanographic Research Institute) are calculated. If the sea level is greater than the lake level and the difference between sea level and lake level at high tide is over the default value, it begins to calculate the tidal power. It is seen that tidal power can supply power to demand side stably and economically from assessment of effect for integrating tidal power into power systems.

  • The intertidal area in Lake Sihwa formed after operation of Sihwa-Lake tidal power plant and the change of the area in Lake Sihwa by period were analyzed. For computation of the intertidal area, remote sensing techniques were applied and high resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was generated with root mean square (rms) error 14.4 cm. The intertidal area was $165.1km^2$ in 1910s, $115.2km^2$ in 1991 before completion of Sihwa dyke, $5.6km^2$ in 2010 during the period on operation of sluice gate, and $20.3km^2$ in 2013 after operation of Sihwa tidal power plant. Intertidal in Lake Sihwa was nearly dissipated after completion of Sihwa dyke, but significantly increased with operation of Sihwa tidal power plant from April 2012 as developing a regular tide environment and increasing of sea water flux. The re-formation of tidal flat of Sihwa Lake is an uncommon case. This study that precisely analyzed on the area of artificially formed Sihwa tidal flat would be applicable for management and making conservation plan.

  • Tidal power is one of new and renewable energy sources. The seawater is stored inside a tidal embankment built at the mouth of a river or bay, where tides ebb and flow. The water turbine-generators produce power by exploiting the gap in the water level between the water outside and inside the embankment. Tidal power plant is a large plant that is installed on the sea. And then, the facility's operations and a separate control system for monitoring and maintenance is required. However, this plant predictive control of building systems and technologies have been avoided the transfer of technology from advanced global companies. Accordingly, the control system for core technology development and localization is urgently needed. This paper presents modeling and simulation using by PSS/E about generator, governor, exciter, and power system stabilizer for control system in Sihwa tidal power plant to improve the efficiency and develope of core technology. And the dynamic characteristics of governor and exciter were analyzed.
