  • This research premises that design failure in the market can stem partially from the gap between designer's communication intension through design and consumer's signification for design. Therefore, it's necessary that designers should examine and understand consumer's signification process for design factors or overall design images that they consider in the design process. For this, this research suggests that understanding consumer's signification process is possible by performing value categorization, consumer segmentation, value identification of main target consumers and relationship examination between value of target consumers and design attributes based on Means-End model by reviewing various theoretical backgrounds. In addition, this research suggests contents and methods for performing each step of understanding consumer's signification process. Also, Laddering was suggested as a method for the study and a case study was performed by it. Finally this research claims that understanding consumer's signification process can be one of the methods that decrease failure possibility rather increase success possibility of design in the market.

  • The analysis on the characteristics of the signification system of Japanese feature-length animations that this essay centrally deals with eventually examines the characteristics of representation and communication in Japanese feature-length animations. In general, most animation works focusing on characters and stories contain the signification systems related to 'denotation' and connotation.' However, tendency of the aesthetic representation and communication that appears differently, depending on the characteristics of the signification system that each animation work pursues. From this point of view, Japanese feature-length animation emphasizes connotative signification system and aesthetic representation, unlike Disney animation that strongly shows the tendency that makes the audience directly immersed in the theme and message of the work conveyed further in the myths by pursuing denotative signification system. And, in the case of Japanese feature-length animation, the 'dissenting and arbitrary interpretation' of the theme, the message that the animation work intends to convey and myths pursued is bound to appear diversely, depending on the audience's experiences and cultural and social backgrounds.

  • This study is semiotic analysis about 'dumb ways to die' that is produced by Melbourne Railway of Australia in 2012. By analyzing the symbolic representations through 'Actants model' of A.J. Greimas, extract the relationship between signification of the represented object in 'dumb ways to die'. Greimas' model helps to analyze the semiotic interpretation action that occurs above a layer of discourse. In addition, this study is to compare the property to distinguish the Semiotic 'Actants' to cause the behavior of the recipient by represented in the same ideological situation. This can determine the properties of the signification and gauge the level of symbolic images that are reproduced in the discourse process. Accordingly, guidance to become a developer by extracting the reproduction principle of the video that causes a user's action.

  • The purpose of this paper was to evaluate how students apply prior knowledge or experience in solving algebra word problems from the chain of signification-based perspective. Three middle school students were evaluated in this case study. The results showed that the subjects formed similarities in the process of applying knowledge needed for solving a problem. The student A and C used semi-open-end formulas and closed formulas as solutions. They then formed concrete shape for each solution using the chain of signification that was applied for solution by forming procedural similarity. At this time, the chain of signification could be the combination of numbers, words, and pictures (such as diagrams or graphs) or just numbers or words. On the other hand, the student C who recognized closed formulas and her own rule as a solution method could not formulate completely procedural similarity due to many errors arising from number information. Nonetheless, all of the subjects showed something in common in the process of coming up with a algorithm that was semi-open-end formula or closed formula.

  • The paper aims to figure out the meaning of money in terms of communication in which we can find the specific communicative and cultural form of money. In the modern capitalist society, we cannot limit money within the economical terms - for example, store of value, medium of exchange, unit of account and means of payment - because money mediates all human activities beyond the economic boundary and conveys specific meaning in the social and the cultural area. Money can be the medium of the cultural and the communicational as well as the medium of the economic. In this respect, we've try to articulate money with linguistic or semiotic insight. Through this theoretical dialogue, we find two significations of money as a medium of communication. The first signification is meta-signification which drives the individual to the unlimited accumulation of the money. Meta-signification displace the second signification of the money that is the singular, over-determined and the mosaic significations. In this process money can be the signifier without signification. And then, money is the Master signifier which all sign should be identified imaginary. Finally, Money is not only the re-presense (Darstellung) of all sings but also the representative (Vertretung) of all signs. But this double position creates some tensions and makes master signifier of money unstable. Man's analysis of Bonapartism, which shares the linguistic or semiotic insight, shows the crack of the re-presence between the representative. Like Marx's analysis, the money has the tension between two signification which makes the room for the struggle to signify.

  • Roland Barthes views a myth as a chain of connotative concepts that are mutually connected. For him, a myth appears through a chain connotation that is mutually related, due to the first-stage signification system. In other words, the connotation of a particular scene is already inherent in a culture in the form of social convention or social values before it is made. In the case of Disney animation, as mentioned Barthes, it has also two layers of denotation and connotation for signification. However, Disney animation shows the tendency that seek the denotative representation and the direct communication, based on the typified character, to the representation and delivery of the myth that is inherent. Therefore, the tendency of denotative signification is seen Disney animation can be said as a branch of research methodology for the approach to the aesthetics of Disney animation.

  • underground space have many negative environmental clements which should be confirmed on location and line of action by the artificial signs. iccordingly, environmental graphics as visual language for popular signification-function have to be studied on sign theory of symbolic meanings. Ho\/ever, its usage has not only decorated by microscopiC appreciative eye but also lost its meanlllg as a visual language which was caused by the negligence of systematic management of the facility in charge Result of study, Visual environmental factors as a cause of behavioral attitude based on the study, which has been carefully considered as a communication of the visual language. Therefore, considering the underground environmental graphics as the: sign or the signification-function, It has to be studied on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic viewpoint.
