A Study on the Pulse Wave Parameter in Hypertension Patients (고혈압 환자의 맥상 연구)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to determine whether a pulse analyzer was useful to characterize the variables of pulse wave of hypertension (HT), compared with those of normal blood pressure group (NP). Methods The subjects were 22,646 who worked at car manufacturing factory. The pulse wave variables and pulse types measured in Guan by DMP 1000. Results In the main and secondary pulse type, there were significant differences between HT and NP. Whereas, in the field of pulse wave variables, no specific differences were between HT and NP. Conclusion Although pulse wave variables were not statistically significant, pulse analyzer might have reliable diagnostic sensitivity between hypertension and non-hypertension population.

  • The theoretical treatment of statistical properties and distribution relevant to nonlinear random wave field of moderate bandwidth such as peak and trough of wave elevation is an overdue task hampered by the complicated form of nonlinear random waves. In this study, the extreme distribution of nonlinear random waves is derived based on the simplified version of Longuet-Higgins' wave model. It is shown that the band width of wave spectrum has a significant influence on these extreme distribution and the significant wave height is getting larger in an increasing manner as the nonlinearity is getting profound.

  • Geotextile tube is environmentally sustainable technology and has been applied in hydraulic and coastal engineering applications. Geotextile tube is composed in permeable fabrics and Inside dredged materials, and hydraulically or mechanically filled with dredged materials. These tube are generally about 1.0m to 2.0m in diameter, through they can be sized for any application. The tubes can be used solely, or stacked to add greater height and usability. Stacked geotextile tubes will create by adding the height necessary for some breakwaters and embankment, therefore increasing the usability of geotextile tubes. This paper presents the hydrodynamic behavior of stacked geotextile tube by hydraulic model tests. The hydraulic model test conducted by structural condition and wave conditions. Structural condition is installation direction to the wave(perpendicular band 45$^{\circ}$), and wave condition is varied with the significant wave height ranging from 3.0m to 6.0m. Based on the test results, the hydrodynamic behaviors such as structural stability, wave control capacity, and strain are interpreted.

Tidal Variation of Waves in Kyung-Gi Bay (경기만 조석조건에서의 파랑변이)

  • Spectral wave models are applied to the area of Kyung-gi bay with two different combinations. One combination assumes a constant tidal elevation over the whole region when applying the wave model to the area. In this case no tidal currents exist in any place. The other combination employs tide model as well as wave model so that tidal condition is defined at every computation time when wave modelling is carried out. Significant wave heights and wave directions are shown for these two cases. With these two different constraints of tidal variation, the results are checked and compared with each other. Both results are found significantly different from each other.

  • Based on a weakly non-Gaussian theory the occurrence probability of freak waves is formulated in terms of the number of waves in a time series and the surface elevation kurtosis. Finite kurtosis gives rise to a significant enhancement of freak wave generation in comparison with the linear narrow banded wave theory. For fixed number of waves, the estimated amplification ratio of freak wave occurrence due to the deviation from the Gaussian theory is 50% - 300%. The results of the theory are compared with laboratory and field data.

Sensitivity Analysis of Wind-Wave Growth Parameter during Typhoon Season in Summer for Developing an Integrated Global/Regional/Coastal Wave Prediction System (전지구·지역·국지연안 통합 파랑예측시스템 개발을 위한 여름철 태풍시기 풍파성장 파라미터 민감도 분석)

  • In this study, an integrated wave model from global to coastal scales was developed to improve the operational wave prediction performance of the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). In this system, the wave model was upgraded to the WaveWatch III version 6.07 with the improved parameterization of the source term. Considering the increased resolution of the wind input field and the introduction of the high-performance KMA 5th Supercomputer, the spatial resolution of global and regional wave models has been doubled compared to the operational model. The physical processes and coefficients of the wave model were optimized for the current KMA global atmospheric forecasting system, the Korean Integrated Model (KIM), which is being operated since April 2020. Based on the sensitivity experiment results, the wind-wave growth parameter (βmax) for the global wave model was determined to be 1.33 with the lowest root mean square errors (RMSE). The value of βmax showed the lowest error when applied to regional/coastal wave models for the period of the typhoon season when strong winds occur. Applying the new system to the case of August 2020, the RMSE for the 48-hour significant wave height prediction was reduced by 13.4 to 17.7% compared to the existing KMA operating model. The new integrated wave prediction system plans to replace the KMA operating model after long-term verification.

A Study on the Heavy Metal Content of Permanent Wave Products (퍼머넌트 웨이브제의 중금속 함량에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to measure the heavy metal content of permanent wave products which on marketing correctly as estimating the extent of exposure by a hair permanent wave scientifically. We would like to prevent an affair from arising health obstruction as to the heavy metal who is using those and also show the basic data for proposing the new standard. The results were as follows.: in case of the average heavy metal content for a wave type thioglycol acid ingredient includes 1.61ppm(Pb), 0.03ppm(Cd), 0.05ppm(Ni), 0.27ppm(Mn), 0.82ppm(Cu) and those were recognized the significant gap between products all the heavy metals. In case of a cysteine acid ingredient includes 0.86ppm(Pb), 0.01ppm(Cd), 0.05ppm(Ni), 0.20ppm(Mn) and 0.66ppm(Cu) and those were recognized the significant gap between products except a nickel. Straight type of permanent wave reductant includes 2.11ppm(Pb), 0.01ppm(Cd), 0.27ppm(Ni), 0.66ppm(Mn), 2.53ppm(Cu) and those were recognized the significant gap between products all the heavy metals. Permanent wave reducing agent includes 1.43ppm(Pb), 0.01ppm(Cd), 0.09ppm(Ni), 0.66ppm(Mn), 0.75ppm(Cu) and those were approved the significant gap between products except a cadmium. Exposure level of the heavy metal contents per onetime permanent waving were 242.3ppm(Pb), 2.5ppm(Cd), 17.7ppm(Ni), 89.0ppm(Mn), 174.7ppm(Cu).

An Experimental Study on Wave Focusing Efficiency in the Generation of Directional Extreme Waves (파랑집중에 의한 다방향 극한파 생성의 효율성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Extreme waves are generated in a model basin based on directional wave focusing. The targeted wave field is described by double summation method and it is applied to serpent-type wavemaker system. The extreme crest amplitude at a designed location is obtained by syncronizing the phases and focusing the directions of wave components. Two distinguished spectrums of constant wave amplitude and constant wave steepness are adapted to describe the frequency distribution of component waves. The surface profile of generated wave packets is measured by wave guage array and the effects of dominant spectral parameters governing extreme wave characteristics are investigated. It is found that frequency bandwidth, center frequency, shape of frequency spectrum and directional range play a significant role in the wave focusing. In particular, the directional effect significantly enhances the wave focusing efficiency.

Trends of the Storm Wave Appearance on the East Coast Analyzed by using Long-term Wave Observation Data (장기실측 파랑자료 분석을 통한 동해안 폭풍파 출현 추세)

  • The trend in appearance of storm waves on the east coast of Korea was investigated based on long-term wave data observed at six different stations. At the four wave stations of KIOST (Sokcho, Mukho, Hupo, and Jinha), no notable trend was found during the observation period with respect to the annual average and maximum values of the significant wave height. In addition, the annual number of the appearance of storm waves showed decreasing trend at the three stations except Jinha, where slightly increasing trend of the quantity was recognized. In contrast, at Donghea ocean data buoy of KMA, abruptly increasing trend was found for the annual average and maximum of the significant wave height and for the annual number of the appearance of storm waves as well, demonstrating lack of consistency in the observation data from Donghea buoy of KMA.

Validation of Significant Wave Height from Satellite Altimeter in the Seas around Korea and Error Characteristics

  • Significant Wave Height (SWH) data measured by satellite altimeters (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, Envisat, and Jason-2) were validated in the seas around Korea by comparison with wave height measurements from marine meteorological buoy stations of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). A total of 1,070 collocation matchups between Ku-band satellite altimeter data and buoy data were obtained for the periods of the four satellites from 1992 to the present. In the case of C-band and S-band observations, 1,086 matchups were obtained and used to assess the accuracy of satellite SWH. Root-Mean-Square (RMS) errors of satellite SWH measured with Ku-band were evaluated to roughly 0.2_2.1 m. Comparisons of the RMS errors and bias errors between different frequency bands revealed that SWH observed with Ku-band was much more accurate than other frequencies, such as C-band or S-band. The differences between satellite SWH and buoy wave height, satellite minus buoy, revealed some dependence on the magnitude of the wave height. Satellite SWH tended to be overestimated at a range of low wave height of less than 1 m, and underestimated for high wave height of greater than 2 m. Such regional characteristics imply that satellite SWH should be carefully used when employed for diverse purposes such as validating wave model results or data assimilation procedures. Thus, this study confirmed that satellite SWH products should be continuously validated for regional applications.
