  • The characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditio, tool material, and tool geometry in metal cutting. The relation between AE signal and tool life was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by gear shaping and SCM 420 workpiece. AE RMS voltage were increased according totool wear. It is suggested that maximum value of AE RMS voltage is an effective parameter to monitor tool life.

  • Characteristics of AE(Acoustic Emission) signal is related to cutting conditions, tool materials, and tool geometry in metal cutting. Relation between AE signal and tool wear was investigated experimentally. Experiment is carried out by interrupted cutting for SCM420 workpiece with TiN coating tool on HSS material. AE RMS voltage and count per event were increased according to tool wear. The major results are as follows : 1) AE RMS value is nearly constant as cutting speed changes, but is rapidly increase as feed rate increases. 2) AE RMS value and Count per Event increase as tool wear increases. 3) It is more effective to monitor tool wear by Incremental rate of AE RMS value than by Incremental rate of count per event.

  • 회전 기계의 저어널 베어링 상태를 음향 방출(AE) 기술을 활용하여 감시하기 위한 진단 시스템을 개발하였다. AE 기술은 베어링 시스템에 있어서 비정상 상태를 탐지하기 위하여 이용된다 모의 저어널 베어링시스템을 이용한 실험과 실제 발전 설비에 대한 적용 시험의 결과로부터 AE 신호 파라메타 중에서 rms voltage가 가장 유효한 것으로 판명되었으며, 이러한 연구 결과를 토대로 하여 진단 시스템의 알고리즘과 판단 기준들이 설정되었다. 베어링 진단 시스템은 AE 센서 및 전치앰프로 구성된 신호 감지부, AE rms voltage를 측정하기 위한 rms-to-DC 변환 회로부로 구성된 신호 처리부, A/D 변환기를 이용하여 rms voltage 신호를 PC에 연결해 주는 인터페이스부, 베어링 상태 보기와 진단 프로그램을 포함하는 그래픽 디스플레이 및 소프트웨어부의 4부분으로 구성된다.

AE 신호 분석에 의한 구성인선의 감지 (Detection of Built-up Edge by AE Signal Analysis)

  • ThisPaper investigates the feasibility of using acoustic emission signal analysis for the detection of built-up edge during machining. Experiments were conducted on a CNC-lathe using conventional carbide insert tools under various cutting conditions. The cutting forces were also measured for comparisons. Experimental evidence is presented which indicates that the presence of a built-up edge can significantly affect the generation of acoustic emission in metal cutting. It is shown that under conditions in which a built-up edge is generated, the variation of $AE_{rms}$ signal with cutting speed can be quite different from the generally accepted linear, monotonic increase as previously reported. The feasibility of utilizing $AE_{rms}$ in built-up edge sensing is suggested.

  • Recently, in order to achieve high flexibilty, monitoring and control strategies of a new type have been developed. This paper investigates the fesability of using scoustic emission signal analysis for the detection of built-up edge during machining. Results for maching SM45C steel show that the presence of a built-up edge can significantil affect the generation of acoustic emission in metal cutting. When the cutting speed comes to the conditions conducive to development of built-up edge, it is shown that the slope of curve-fitted AErms signal undergoes a change. The fesability of utilizing AErms in built-up edge sensing is sugested.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a fiber-optic acoustic emission(AE) sensor applicable to on-line monitoring systems which is suitable for long-distance signal transmission. An AE sensor was developed by use of a fiber-optic cantilever and an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer(EEPI). The efficiency of signal processing was improved by driving the high frequency AE signals into the low frequency ones. In order to verify the developed sensor, the tensile and the pencil lead fracture(PLF) tests were performed including the experiment showing the Kaiser effect. Form tests, AE signals were successfully detected in the elastic-plastic deformation range, especially higher signals at the crack propagation. The developed sensor was expected to be used for an on-line monitoring of crack propagation in mechanical system.

  • Wear and fracture mode of ceramic tool for hardened SKD11 steel was investigated by face milling in this study. The cutting force and Acoustic Emission(AE) signal were utilized to detect the wear and fracture of ceramic tool. The following conclusions were obtained : (1) The wear and fracture modes of ceramic tool are characterized by three types: \circled1wear which has normal wear and notch wear, \circled2 wear caused by scooping on the rake face, \circled3 large fracture caused by thermal crack in the rake face. (2) The wear behaviour of ceramic tool can be detected by the increase of mean cutting force and the variation of the AE RMS voltage. (3) The catastrophic fracture of ceramic tool can be detected by the cutting force(Fz-component). (4) As the hardness of work material increased, Acoustic Emission RMS value and mean cutting force(Fz) increased linearly, but the tool life decreased.

  • To verify the system performance of portable AE leak diagnosis system which can measure with moving conditions, AE activities such as RMS voltage level, AE signal trend, leak rate degree according to AE database, FFT spectrum were measured during operation on total 11 valves of the secondary system in nuclear power plant. AE activities were recorded and analyzed from various operating conditions including different temperature, type of valve, pressure difference, valve size and fluid. The results of this field study are utilized to select the type of sensors, the frequency band for filtering and thereby to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for diagnosis for diagnosis or monitoring of valves in operation. As the final result of application study above, portable type leak diagnosis system by AE was developed. The outcome of the study can be definitely applied as a means of the diagnosis or monitoring system for energy saving and prevention of accident for power plant valve. The purpose of this study is to verify availability of the acoustic emission in-situ monitoring method to the internal leak and operating conditions of the major valves at nuclear power plants. In this study, acoustic emission tests are performed when the pressurized temperature water and steam flowed through glove valve(main steam dump valve) and check valve(main steam outlet pump check valve) on the normal size of 12 and 18 ". The valve internal leak monitoring system for practical field was designed. The acoustic emission method was applied to the valves at the site, and the background noise was measured for the abnormal plant condition. To improve the reliability, a judgment of leak on the system was used various factors which are AE parameters, trend analysis, frequency analysis, voltage analysis and amplitude analysis of acoustic signal emitted from the valve operating condition internal leak.

  • Acoustic emission(AE) signals detected during metal cutting were applied as the experimental test to sensing tool wear and chipping on the NC vertical milling machine. The in-process detection of cutting tool wear including chipping, cracking and fracture has been investigated by means of AE in spite of vibration or noise through intermittent metal cutting, then the following results were obtained 1) When the tool wear is increased suddenly, or the amplitude of AE signals changes largely, it indicates chipping or breaking of the insert tip. 2) It was confirmed that AE signal is highly sensitive to the cutting speed and tool wear. 3) At the early period of cutting, the wear were large and RMS value increased highly by the influence of minute chipping and cracking, etc. Therefore, the above situations should be considered for the time when the tool would be changed.

  • To compare the sensor performance of AE leak diagnosis system which can measure valve leak conditions, AE activities such as RMS voltage level, AE signal trend, leak rate degree according to AE database, FFT spectrum were measured on valve of the simulated test system for power plant. AE activities were recorded and analyzed from various operating conditions including different temperature, pressure difference, valve size and fluid using both piezoelectric acoustic emission sensor and Pb-Free acoustic emission sensor. The results of this study are utilized to select the type of sensors, the frequency band for filtering and thereby to improve the signal-to-noise ratio for diagnosis or monitoring of valves in operation. As the final result of application study above, portable type leak diagnosis system by AE was developed.
