PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to propose delay-minimizing operation methodology of a signalized intersection based upon optimization of lane-uses on approaching lanes for an intersection. METHODS : For the optimization model of lane-uses, a set of constraints are set up to ensure feasibility and safety of the lane-uses, traffic flow, and signal settings. Minimization of demand to saturation flow ratio of a dual-ring signal control system is introduced to the objective function for delay minimization and effective signal operation. Using the optimized lane-uses, signal timings are optimized by delay-based model of TRANSYT-7F. RESULTS : It was found that the proposed objective function is great relation with delay time for an intersection. From the experimental results, the method was approved to be effective in reducing delay time. Especially, cases for two left-turn lanes reduced greater delays than those for a left turn lane. It is noticed that the cases for different traffic volume by approach reduced greater delays than those for the same traffic volume by approach. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the objective function is proper for lane-uses optimizing model and the operation method is effective in reducing delay time for signalized intersections.

Adaptive arrays can minimize contributions from interferences incident onto an sensor array while preserving a signal the direction vector of which corresponds to the array steering vector to within a scalar factor. If there exist errors in the steering vector, severe performance degradation can be caused since the desired signal is misunderstood as an interference by the array. This paper presents an adaptive beamforming method which is robust against steering vector errors, exploiting a range of the desired signal direction. In the presented method, an correlation matrix of array response vectors is obtained through integration over the direction range and a minimization problem is formulated using some eigenvectors of the correlation matrix such that a more accurate steering vector than initially given one can be found. The minimization problem is transformed into a relaxed SDP (semidefinite program) problem, which can be effectively solved since it is a sort of convex optimization. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms existing ones such as ORM (outside-range-based method) and USM (uncertainty-based method).

Genetic algorithms(GA) are well known and very popular stochastic optimization algorithm. Although, GA is very powerful method to find the global optimum, it has some drawbacks, for example, premature convergence to local optima, slow convergence speed to global optimum. To enhance the performance of GA, this paper proposes an adaptive partitioning-based genetic algorithm. The partitioning method, which enables GA to find a solution very effectively, adaptively divides the search space into promising sub-spaces to reduce the complexity of optimization. This partitioning method is more effective as the complexity of the search space is increasing. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by applying it to several bench mark test function examples and the optimization of fuzzy controller for the control of an inverted pendulum.

In this paper, we study the sparse signal recovery that uses information of both support and amplitude of the sparse signal. A convergent iterative algorithm for sparse signal recovery is developed using Majorization-Minimization-based Non-convex Optimization (MM-NcO). Furthermore, it is shown that, typically, the sparse signals that are recovered using the proposed iterative algorithm are not globally optimal and the performance of the iterative algorithm depends on the initial point. Therefore, a modified MM-NcO-based iterative algorithm is developed that uses prior information of both support and amplitude of the sparse signal to enhance recovery performance. Finally, the modified MM-NcO-based iterative algorithm is used to estimate the time-varying sparse wireless channels with temporal correlation. The numerical results show that the new algorithm performs better than related algorithms.

This paper has focused on the Optimization of the cutting parameters for urning operation based on the Taguchi method. Four cutting parameters. nemely, cutting speed, feed depth of cut and nose radius are optimized with consideration of the surface roughness. The design and analysis of experiments are conducted to study the performance characteristic. The effects of these parameters on the surface roughness have been investigated using signal-to-noise(S/N) ratio and analy-sis of variance(ANOVA). The experiments have been performed using coated tungsten carbide inserts without any cutting fluid. Experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.
Given a noisy sampled at equispaced points with white noise, we consider problems where the signal to be recovered is known to be positive; for example, images, chemical spectra or other measurements of intensities. Shrinking noisy wavelet coefficients via thresholding offers very attractive alternatives to existing methods of recovering signals from noisy data. In this paper, we propose a method of recovering the original signal from a corrupted noisy signal, guaranteeing the recovered signal positive. We first obtain wavelet coefficients by thresholding, and use a nonlinear optimization to find the denoised signal which must be positive. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.
This paper describes a new optimization technique for the design of traffic signal patterns. The proposed method uses a Genetic Algorithm for searching through the better signal patterns. Since the Genetic Algorithm is effective to search directly through a huge binary coded state spaces, the proposed design method has the following advantages over the conventional OR methods: (1) on-line optimization is available within a reasonable time, (2) there is no limitation to the types of signals to be optimized. Some computer simulations are carried out and its ability of getting high quality control in a short period is demonstrated.
This paper describes the optimization of PGS(Patterned Ground Shield) of 5.5 turns rectangular spiral inductor using Taguchi's method. PGS is decrease method of parasite component by silicon substrate among dielectric loss reduction method. By using the taguchi's method, each parameter is fixed upon that PGS high poison(A), slot spacing(B), strip width(C) and overlap turn number(D) of PGS design parameter. Then we verified that percentage contribution and design sensitivity analysis of each parameter and level by signal to noise ratio of larger-the-better type. We consider percentage contribution and design sensitivity of each parameter and level, and then verify that model of optimization for PGS is lower inductance decreasing ratio and higher Q-factor increasing ratio by EM simulation.
Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a convenient method for monitoring a heart rhythm. In addition to specialized devices, smartphones can be used to obtain PPG signals. However, as smartphones are not intended for this purpose, optimization is required to efficiently obtain PPG signals. Determining the optimal region of interest (ROI) is one such optimization method. There are two significant advantages in employing an optimized ROI. One is that the computing load is decreased by reducing the image size used to extract the PPG signal. The other is that stronger and more reliable PPG signals are obtained by removing noisy regions. In this paper, we propose an optimal ROI determination method by recursively splitting regions to locate the region that produces the strongest PPG signal.
A psychoacoustic model based noise shaping method which shapes the noise in the frequency domain is proposed, where its presence with a host signal will not be perceptually noticeable. The derivation of imperceptible noise levels from the masking thresholds of the signal involves a deconvolution associated with the spreading function in the psychoacoustic model, which results in an ill-conditioned problem. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a constrained optimization, and it is demonstrated that the solution provides noise shaping where the noise excitation level conforms to the masking thresholds of the signal, and thus the noises embedded in the signal will not be perceived by human ear.
