A family of smart tuned mass dampers (STMDs) with variable frequency and damping properties is analyzed under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Two types of STMDs are studied: one is realized by a semi-active independently variable stiffness (SAIVS) device and the other is realized by a pendulum with an adjustable length. Based on the feedback signal, the angle of the SAIVS device or the length of the pendulum is adjusted by using a servomotor such that the frequency of the STMD matches the dominant excitation frequency in real-time. Closed-form solutions are derived for the two types of STMDs under harmonic excitations and ground motions. Results indicate that a small damping ratio (zero damping is the best theoretically) and an appropriate mass ratio can produce significant reduction when compared to the case with no tuned mass damper. Experiments are conducted to verify the theoretical result of the smart pendulum TMD (SPTMD). Frequency tuning of the SPTMD is implemented through tracking and analyzing the signal of the excitation using a short time Fourier transformation (STFT) based control algorithm. It is found that the theoretical model can predict the structural responses well. Both the SAIVS STMD and the SPTMD can significantly attenuate the structural responses and outperform the conventional passive TMDs.

In this paper, a study on a wireless check-up method of test equipment for captive flight test(CFT) was conducted. For CFT, test equipment is mounted on a POD, and check-up is carried on the test equipment's. For check-up the POD wirelessly, battery, power distribution unit, wireless communication devices were designed within the POD, and a check-up device is designed outside of the POD. Once the external check-up device sends a 'start signal' to the POD, it performs the overall check-up procedures and transmits the 'end signal' to the external check-up device. Detailed check-up results are stored in an internal storage device, and are possible to read from external check-up device if necessary, thereby improving the reliability of the wireless check-up. By implementing and applying these wireless check-up system, the reliability of the check-up was enhanced by dynamical and movable check-up, and safety is guaranteed as the check-up was carried without access to the aircraft.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) is a disease caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection that can be diagnosed through clinical symptoms with or without imaging evaluations. The typical features of RHS on imaging evaluation include signal changes and enhancement in the internal auditory canal (IAC) nerves, and the labyrinthine segment of cranial nerve VII (CN VII) and cranial nerve VIII (CN VIII). In some patients, inner ear structure (cochlear and vestibular apparatus) is involved in RHS. Neurologic complications, such as encephalitis and meningitis, are rare in RHS, but are known to occur. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to detect both abnormal signal intensity in the IAC, CN VII, CN VIII, inner and ear structure, and CNS complications. We report an RHS patient with CN VII, VIII, and leptomeningeal enhancement within the cerebellar folia on 10-min delayed, contrast-enhanced (CE), three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) imaging.
The microwave Radar used for special purposes in the past is being applied in various areas due to the technological advancement and cost reduction, and is particularly applied to autonomous driving in the automobile field. The FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) Radar can acquire level information of liquid in vessel based on the beat frequency obtained by continuously transmitting and receiving signals by modulating the frequency over time. However, for cryogenic fluids with small impedance differences between liquid medium and gas medium, such as liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen, it is difficult to apply a typical Radar-based level meter. In this study, we develop an 80 GHz FMCW Radar for level measurement of cryogenic fluids with small impedance differences between media and analyze its characteristics. Here, because of the low intrinsic impedance difference, most of the transmitted signal passes through the liquid nitrogen interface and is reflected at the bottom of the vessel. To solve this problem, a radar measurement algorithm was designed to detect multiple targets and separate the distance signal to the bottom of the vessel in order to estimate the precise position on the liquid nitrogen interface. Thereafter, performance verification experiments were performed according to the liquid nitrogen level using the developed radar level meter.
This study suggested a new EMG-signal-based evaluation method for knee rehabilitation that provides not only fragmentary information like muscle power but also in-depth information like muscle fatigue in the field of rehabilitation which it has not been applied to. In our experiment, nine healthy subjects performed straight leg raise exercises which are widely performed for knee rehabilitation. During the exercises, we recorded the joint angle of the leg and EMG signals from four prime movers of the leg: rectus femoris (RFM), vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and biceps femoris (BFLH). We extracted two parameters to estimate muscle fatigue from the EMG signals, the zero-crossing rate (ZCR) and amplitude of muscle tension (AMT) that can quantitatively assess muscle fatigue from EMG signals. We found a decrease in the ZCR for the RFM and the BFLH in the muscle fatigue condition for most of the subjects. Also, we found increases in the AMT for the RFM and the BFLH. Based on the results, we quantitatively confirmed that in the state of muscle fatigue, the ZCR shows a decreasing trend whereas the AMT shows an increasing trend. Our results show that both the ZCR and AMT are useful parameters for characterizing the EMG signals in the muscle fatigue condition. In addition, our proposed methods are expected to be useful for developing a navigation system for knee rehabilitation exercises by evaluating the two parameters in two-dimensional parameter space.
Under the influence of Autonomous Driving and AI, it is important to accurately recognize and judge objects through cameras. In particular, since a method of recognizing an object using a camera can obtain a large amount of information visually compared to other methods, many image signal processing methods have been studied to extract an accurate image. In addition, a lot of research is being carried out to implementation about hardware. In this work, we compare the principles and characteristics of the sorting algorithms that are frequently used in image signal processing and summarize the performance evaluation. Based on this, we define an efficient algorithm when implemented in hardware among efficient sorting algorithms.

In this study, the effect of wearing functional compression pants is verified using a lower-limb wearable robot through a bio-signal analysis and subjective fit evaluation. First, the compression area to be applied to the functional compression pants is derived using the quad method for nine men in their 20s. Subsequently, functional compression pants are prepared, and changes in Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals when wearing the functional compression and normal regular pants inside a wearable robot are measured. The EEG and ECG signals are measured with eyes closed and open. Results indicate that the Relative alpha (RA) and Relative gamma wave (RG) of the EEG signal differ significantly, resulting in increased stability and reduced anxiety and stress when wearing the functional compression pants. Furthermore, the ECG analysis results indicate statistically significant differences in the Low frequency (LF)/High frequency (HF) index, which reflect the overall balance of the autonomic nervous system and can be interpreted as feeling comfortable and balanced when wearing the functional compression pants. Moreover, subjective sense is discovered to be effective in assessing wear fit, ease of movement, skin friction, and wear comfort when wearing the functional compression pants.

Arteriosclerosis is the leading cause of stroke, with a fatality rate surpassing that of ischemic heart disease. High-resolution vessel wall magnetic resonance imaging is generally recognized as a non-invasive and panoramic method for the evaluation of arterial plaque; however, this method requires improved signal-to-noise ratio and scanning speed. Recent advances in high-density head and neck coil arrays are characterized by broad coverage, multiple channels, and closefitting designs. This review analyzes fast magnetic resonance imaging from the perspective of accelerated algorithms for vessel wall imaging and demonstrates the need for effective algorithms for signal acquisition using advanced radiofrequency system. We summarize different phased-array structures under various experimental objectives and equipment conditions, introduce current research results, and propose prospective research studies in the future.

This work demonstrates the design and evaluation of Aqua-Aware, a lightweight miniaturized light emitting diode (LED) based underwater compact sensor node which is used to obtain different characteristics of the underwater environment. Two optical sensor nodes have been designed, developed, and evaluated for a short and medium link range called as Aqua-Aware short range (AASR) and Aqua-Aware medium range (AAMR), respectively. The hardware and software implementation of proposed sensor node, algorithms, and trade-offs have been discussed in this paper. The underwater environment is emulated by introducing different turbulence effects such as air bubbles, waves and turbidity in a 4-m water tank. In clear water, the Aqua-Aware achieved a data rate of 0.2 Mbps at communication link up to 2-m. The Aqua-Aware was able to achieve 0.2 Mbps in a turbid water of 64 NTU in the presence of moderate water waves and air bubbles within the communication link range of 1.7-m. We have evaluated the luminous intensity, packet success rate and bit error rate performance of the proposed system obtained by varying the various medium characteristics.

Environmental radiation monitoring is required to protect from the effects of radiation in industrial fields such as nuclear power plant (NPP) monitoring, and various gamma camera systems are being developed. The purpose of this study is to optimize parameters of a diverging collimator composed of pure tungsten for compactness and lightness through Monte Carlo simulation. We conducted the performance evaluation based on spatial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio for point source and obtained gamma images and profiles. As a result, optimization was determined at a collimator height of 60.0 mm, a hole size of 1.5 mm, and a septal thickness of 1.0 mm. Also, the full-width-at-half-maximum was 3.5 mm and the signal-to-noise ratio was 53.5. This study proposes a compact 45° diverging collimator structure that can quickly and accurately identify the location of the source for radiation monitoring.
