  • In this study, PSA, known as the most economic process, was used to recover $CO_2$ from the power-plant flue gas. Activated carbon and zeolite molecular sieve 13X were used as adsorbent. Activated carbon has been deemed inadequated adsorbent for separating $CO_2$ from the flue gas. However, highly concentrated $CO_2$ could be obtained as a product on the activated carbon adsorbent using the new operating cycle modifying the rinse step. Also, the recovery of $CO_2$ was improved using double-layered adsorption column packed with the activated carbon and the zeolite 13X simultaneously. Adsorption column was filled with the activated carbon in the feed-end side, and the zeolite 13X in the product-end side. The recovery of $CO_2$ increased about 40% with only 25% zeolite, and increased 67% with 50% zeolite at the experimental conditions of 13% $CO_2$ concentration, 10 SLPM flow rate and 2.2 atm adsorption pressure.

  • Sixteen kinds of piercing-sucking mouth type insects were observed at witches'-broom diseased paulownia (Paulownia tomentosa) trees. Among ten insect species tested, a leafhopper, Empoasca sp., transmitted paulownia witches'-broom mycoplasma-like organism(PWB-MLO) to periwinkle(Catharanthus roseus) plant. Adults of this leafhopper were collected from PWB-diseased paulownia trees. The leafhpoppers were allowed to feed on the PWB-infected paulownia trees for three weeks to acquire PWB-MLO. These insects were then transferred to healthy seedlings of paulownia and periwinkle plants for inoculation-feeding. About 30-40days after the inoculation, "little-leaf" symptoms developed on periwinkle plants, but no symptoms developed on paulownia seedlings. MLO infection in the diseased periwinkle tissue was diagnosed by fluorescence microscopy. MLOs were observed in the sieve tubes by electron microscopy, proving the insect transmission of PWB-MLO.

  • The development of Japanese geoduck, Panopea japonica, grown under culture conditions, has been examined through the morphological characteristics in fertilized egg, larvae and juvenile. Gametes were stripped from ripe broodstock and placed into two separate containers. Eggs were washed through a $40{\mu}m$ sieve and fertilized with dilute sperm solution. Developing larvae were maintained at $19{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs with $81.6{\mu}m$ diameter developed to trochophores within 14 h and to D-stage larvae ($116{\mu}m$ shell length) within 27 h. Larvae were spontaneously settled at shell length of $311{\mu}m$ after 20 days. The hatching from fertilized eggs and larval rearing were normally available in $18.5-21.5^{\circ}C$, and the growth was good in a cashmilon substrate, as well as sand. After rearing of day 108 from metamorphosis, the shell length of juvenile P. japonica reached 13 mm, and growth rate of shell length of the juvenile was $117.5{\mu}m/d$.

  • A solid-state reaction of $MoO_3$ with as-synthesized H-SAPO-34 generated paramagnetic Mo(V) species. The dehydration resulted in weak Mo(V) species, and subsequent activation resulted in the formation of Mo(V) species such as $Mo(V)_{5c}$ and $Mo(V)_{6c}$ that are characterized by ESR. The data of ESR and ESEM show the oxomolybdenum species, to be $(MoO_2)^+$ or $(MoO)^{3+}$. The $(MoO_2)^+$ species seems to be more probable. Since H-SAPO-34 has a low framework negative charge, $(MoO)^{3+}$ with a high positive charge can not be easily stabilized. A solution reaction between the solution of silico-molybdic acid and calcined H-SAPO-34 resulted in only $(MoO_2)^+$ species. A rhombic ESR signal is observed on adsorption of $D_2O$, $CD_3OH$, $CH_3Ch_2OD$ and $ND_3$. The Location and coordination structure of Mo(V) species has been determined by three-pulse electron spin-echo modulation data and their simulations. After the adsorption of methanol, ethylene, ammonia, and water for MoH-SAPO-34, three molecules, one molecule, one and one molecule, respectively, are directly coordinated to $(MoO_2)^+)$.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the feasibility of field-scale sequential soil washing process for remediation on Kyongsangnamdo D mine soils which was heavily contaminated by arsonic. Arsenic concentration of untreated soils was $321\pm32mg/kg$. By applying the basic operating condition which was proposed from several pilot-scale experiments, arsenic concentration of treated soils was reduced 2.04 mg/kg ($99\%$ removal efficiency). We optimized the basic operating condition (mainly on washing solution concentration, cut-off size, and mixing ratio) to improve efficiently and economically the field-scale sequential soil washing process. The resulting optimized conditions were that solution concentration is 0.2M HCl, 1.0M HCl, 1.0M NaOH, that the cut-off size is 0.15mm (seive $\sharp$100), and that the mixing ratio is 1 3. Also, the optimized pH value for soil washing effluent treatment was 6 (33 ppb), in which the precipitation disruption caused by supersaturation of the floe did not occur. Results of TCLP tests showed that arsenic concentration from the washed gravels was 1.043 mg/L, that from soils ND (not detected), and that from filter cakes 0.066 mg/L. Also, the water content as a percentage of dewatered sludges was low $(48\%)$ and so the dewatered sludges can be disposed by landfilling. Through these results, we can concluded that tile field-scale sequential soil washing process developed in this study is adopted for remediation of arsenic-contaminated soils.

  • Serious consequences can arise from lack of hygiene in mass catering. Microbiological testing is of value in determining hazards for developing a HACCP plan, and in demonstrating to food handlers the reality of the microbial risk. This studies was performed to describe the overall hygiene of cooking utensils and equipments, employees, and environment in mass catering establishments. Generally, hygienic conditions of cutting board and sanitized dish cloth were better than those of other cooking utensils such as knife, sieve, and peeler. It was found that the cross-contamination of knife might be caused by the use of contaminated sanitizing solution. It was observed that there was considerable variation (10$^1$~10$^{5}$ CFU) of the number of general bacteria for employee's hands. The number of general bacteria were influenced from establishment, employee, and the period of analysis. The number of Coliform group for employee's hands was in the range of 10$^2$~10$^4$CFU only at the first analysis. Total aerial bacteria in working area of mass catering establishments was below 7 CFU/Plate and aerial Staphylococcus sp. was not detected at all except one spot.

  • Safflower Yangengs were prepared with composite dried powder of small red bean(Phaseolus radiatus L.) containing various ratios of safflower(Carthamus tinctorius L.) seed powder sifted through 20, 35, 45 and 60 mesh size and kinds of mixed water, their cooking characteristics were evaluated. Water content and water activity of cooked products were increased as the content and sieve mesh number of safflower seed powder increasing from 5%, 20 mesh to 20%, 60mesh, respectively. Color values of yangeng were increased in green tea extract mixed water. Rheological properties of yangengs were measured by compression test with texture analyzer, as results, hardness and fracturability increased that were shown in high content and high mesh number sifted safflower seed powder, but adhesiveness and springiness decreased, respectively. From the sensory evaluation test for yangeng, sensory scores were good scores in more mesh number sifted powder addition, especially overall acceptance, texture and fracturability. The 45mesh and 15% powder added yangeng was noted as having high sensory scores and preferable acceptability in sensory evaluation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of binding agents on the physicochemical characteristics of granule prepared by Lentinus edodes. The mushroom powder was mixed with com starch, lactose, gelatin, gum arabic, or dextrin(DE=23), and the mixtures were passed to granule sieve. Solubility of granule was in the following order, gum arabic>gelatin>lactose, dextrin>corn starch. L value was in the following order, com starch, lactose>gelatin, gum arabic, dextrin. a value and pH were not affected by the binding agents. b value was in following order, lactose, corn starch>gelatin, gum arabic>dextrin. Viscosity was in the following order, gelatin, corn starch>gum arabic, dextrin>lactose. Water absorption was in the following order, gelatin>lactose>corn starch>dextrin>gum arabic. Sugar content was in the following order, gum arabic>lactose, dextrin>corn starch, gelatin. Protein content was the highest in granule formed with gelatin. These results suggested that gum arabic can be utilized for improving solubility and lowering absorption of Lentinus edodes granule as binding agent.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the differences in masticatory performance, muscle activity, and patterns of occlusal contact between persons with natural dentition and removable partial denture wearers. Twenty healthy adult subjects with more than 28 teeth and thirteen removable partial denture wearers that classified Kennedy classification I was selected. The degree of pulverized rice and peanut was measured and analyzed by means of sieving method to compare the masticatory performance. For the muscle activity, EMG was recorded in selected muscles(Temporalis and masseter muscle) during mastication and resting state. The occlusal record in maximal intercuspation was taken with a silicone occlusal bite registration material for analysis of the patterns of occlusal contact. The obtained results were as follows: 1. When chewed peanuts, masticatory performance ratio at 10-sieve size was 81.31% in natural dentition group. In removable partial denture wearer, 27.01% without RPD and 69.09% with RPD. When chewed rice, 42.04%, 11.87%, and 21.58%, respectively. The differences of masticatory performance ratio between groups were statistically significant at the 0.05 level. 2. The mean EMG value in resting state was $1.06{\mu}V$ on temporal muscle, $0.98{\mu}V$ on masseter muscle in natural dentition group. In removable partial denture wearers, $1.13{\mu}V$ on temporal muscle, $1.05{\mu}V$ on masseter muscle without RPD and $1.11{\mu}V$ on temporal muscle, $1.04{\mu}V$ on masseter muscle with RPD. 3. The mean EMG value during mastication was $45.64{\mu}V$ in natural dentition group, and in removable partial denture wearers, $22.06{\mu}V$ without RPD and $31.01{\mu}V$ with RPD when chewed peanuts. When chewed rice, $45.24{\mu}V,\;25.53{\mu}V\;and\;32.14{\mu}V$, respectively. The differences of mean masticatory EMG value between groups were statistically significant at the 0.05 level. 4. The number of posterior occlusal contact point was 20.15 in natural dentition group and 11.92 in removable partial denture wearers. The area of perforated surface was $16.50mm^2$ in natural dentition group and $6.06mm^2$ in removable partial denture wearers. The area of contact surface was $78.93mm^2,\;51.52mm^2$, respectively. 5. The area of contact surface was effective to masticatory performance ratio in natural dentition group and removable partial denture wearers (p<0.05). From these results, it is concluded that in partially edentulous patient, masticatory efficiency can be improved by removable partial denture wearing, and for efficient mastication, tight occlusal contact surface shoud be maintained by maximum support that is provided from mucosa.
