In this study, software-based countermeasures against a side-channel cryptanalysis of the Rabbit stream cipher were developed using Moteiv's Tmote Sky, a popular wireless sensor mote based on the Berkeley TelosB, as the target platform. The countermeasures build upon previous work by improving mask generation, masking and hiding other components of the algorithm, and introducing a key refreshment scheme. Our contribution brings improvements to previous countermeasures making the implementation resistant to higher-order attacks. Four functional metrics, namely resiliency, robustness, resistance, and scalability, were used for the assessment. Finally, performance costs were measured using memory usage and execution time. In this work, it was demonstrated that although attacks can be feasibly carried out on unprotected systems, the proposed countermeasures can also be feasibly developed and deployed on resource-constrained devices, such as wireless sensors.

Side-channel attacks are a quiet mighty type of attack that targets specific physical implementations vulnerabilities. Even though several researchers have examined diverse means and methods of detecting side-channel attacks, at the present time a systematic review of these approaches does not exist. The purposes of this paper are to give an extensive analysis of literature on side-channel attack detection and offer intuitiveness from past research studies. In this study, a literature survey is conducted on articles related to side-channel attack detection between 2020 and 2022 from ACM and IEEE digital libraries. From the 10 publications included in the study, it appears they target either a single type of side-channel attacks or multiple types of side-channel attacks. Therefore, a vital review of each of the two categories is provided, as well as possible prospective research in this field of study.

The HC-128 stram cipher which selected for the final eSTREAM portfolio is suitable for mobile Ad-Hoc network environments because of the ability of high-speed encryption in restricted memory space. In this paper, we analyzed the vulnerability of side channel analysis attack on HC-128 stream cipher. At the first, we explain a flaw of previous theoretical analysis result which defined the complexity of side-channel attack of HC-128 stream cipher as 'low' and then re-evaluate the security against side-channel attack by estimating the concrete complexity for recovering the secret key. As a result, HC-128 stream cipher is relatively secure against side-channel attack since recovering the secret key have $2^{65}$ computation complexity which is higher than other stream cipher's one.
CRAFT is a tweakable block cipher introduced in 2019 that aims to provide strong protection against differential fault analysis. In this paper, we show that CRAFT is vulnerable to side-channel cube attacks. We apply side-channel cube attacks to CRAFT with the Hamming weight leakage assumption. We found that the first half of the secret key can be recovered from the Hamming weight leakage after the first round. Next, using the recovered key bits, we continue our attack to recover the second half of the secret key. We show that the set of equations that are solvable varies depending on the value of the key bits. Our result shows that 99.90% of the key space can be fully recovered within a practical time.

In this paper we introduce a new side-channel attack using block cipher cryptanalysis named meet-in-the middle attack. Using our new side-channel technique we introduce side-channel attacks on AES with reduced masked rounds. That is, we show that AES with reduced 10 masked rounds is vulnerable to side channel attacks based on an existing 4-round function. This shows that one has to mask the entire rounds of the 12-round 192-bit key AES to prevent our attacks. Our results are the first ones to analyze AES with reduced 10 masked rounds.

See-In-The-Middle (SITM) is an analysis technique that uses Side-Channel information for differential cryptanalysis. This attack collects unmasked middle-round power traces when implementing block ciphers to select plaintext pairs that satisfy the attacker's differential pattern and utilize them for differential cryptanalysis to recover the key. Romulus, one of the final candidates for the NIST Lightweight Cryptography standardization competition, is based on Tweakable block cipher Skinny-128-384+. In this paper, the SITM attack is applied to Skinny-128-384 implemented with 14-round partial masking. This attack not only increased depth by one round, but also significantly reduced the time/data complexity to 214.93/214.93. Depth refers to the round position of the block cipher that collects the power trace, and it is possible to measure the appropriate number of masking rounds required when applying the masking technique to counter this attack. Furthermore, we extend the attack to Romulus's Nonce-based AE mode Romulus-N, and Tweakey's structural features show that it can attack with less complexity than Skinny-128-384.

The SITM (See-In-The-Middle) proposed in CHES 2020 is a methodology for side-channel assisted differential cryptanalysis. This technique analyzes the power traces of unmasked middle rounds in partial masked SPN block cipher implementation, and performs differential analysis with the side channel information. Blockcipher GIFT is a lightweight blockcipher proposed in CHES 2017, designed to correct the well-known weaknesses of block cipher PRESENT and provide the efficient implementation. In this paper, we propose SITM attacks on partial masked implementation of GIFT-128. This attack targets 4-round and 6-round masked implementation of GIFT-128 and time/data complexity is 214.01 /214.01, 216 /216. In this paper, we compare the masterkey recovery logic available in SITM attacks, establishing a criterion for selecting more efficient logic depending on the situation. Finally, We introduce how to apply the this attack to GIFT-COFB, one of the finalist candidates in NIST lightweight cryptography standardization process.
Consider RSA with N = pq, q < p < 2q, public encryption exponent e and private decryption exponent d. We first study cryptanalysis of RSA when certain amount of the Most Significant Bits (MSBs) or Least Significant Bits (LSBs) of d is known. The basic lattice based technique is similar to that of Ernst et al. in Eurocrypt 2005. However, our idea of guessing a few MSBs of the secret prime p substantially reduces the requirement of MSBs or LSBs of d for the key exposure attack. Further, we consider the RSA variant proposed by Sun and Yang in PKC 2005 and show that the partial key exposure attack works significantly on this variant.
A side channel analysis is a very efficient attack against small devices such as smart cards and wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose an efficient key detection method using a peak selection algorithm in order to find the advanced encryption standard secret key from electromagnetic signals. The proposed method is applied to a correlation electromagnetic analysis (CEMA) attack against a wireless sensor node. Our approach results in increase in the correlation coefficient in comparison with the general CEMA. The experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently and reliably uncover the entire 128-bit key with a small number of traces, whereas some extant methods can reveal only partial subkeys by using a large number of traces in the same conditions.

The Side Channel attack methods proposed by P.Kocher are mainly used for cryptanalysis different cipher algorithms even though they are claimed to be strongly secured. Those kinds of attacks depend on environment implementation especially on the hardware implementation of the algorithm to the crypto module. side-channel attacks are a type of attack introduced by P.Kocher and is applicable according to each environment or method that is designed. This kind of attack can analyze and also extract important information by reading the binary code data via measurement of changes in electricity(voltage) consumption, running time, error output and sounds. Thus, in this paper, we discuss recent SPA and DPA attacks as well as recent countermeasure techniques.
