  • Formation of Solid Solution and Microstructure in Processureless sintered SiC-AlN compo-site using oxides as a sintering aid at 185$0^{\circ}C$ and 195$0^{\circ}C$ Regardless of SiC/AlN ratio in composition most of sintered specimens showed he complex structure mixed with 2H solid solution and SiC particles. High sintering temperature and large AlN content in starting composition enhanced the formation of 2H solid solution in sintered specimen 2H solid solution showed the spherical shape and core-rim structure. AlN content in the core is higher than that in the rim but SiC content . The size of 2H solid solution on fracture showed the transgranular fracture mode compared with the dispersed SiC particles which showed the intergranular fracture mode.

SiC 휘스커 및 TiC 입자 강화 알루미나 복합재료의 기계적 성질과 미세조직 (Mechanical Properties and Microstructures of Alumina Composites Reinforced with SiC Whiskers and TiC Particles)

  • Alumina composites reinforced with SiC whiskers only or combinded with TiC particles were prepared by hot-pressing at 1850$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The mechanical properties and microstructures of composites were investigated in this study. By of addition either 20 vol% SiC whiskers or 20 vol% TiC particles, the flexural strength fo alumina was increased from 360 MPa to 650 MPa or 730 MPa, respectively, and the KIC was also increased from 3.5 MPa$.$m1/2 to 5.5MPa$.$m1/2 or 4.4MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. In the case of composites with 20 vol% SiC whiskers and 2 vol% TiC particles. The flexural strength and KIC showed relatively high value of 800 MPa and 5.3MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties was considered to be due to both the smaller average grain size and the crack deflection.

Gas Permeation of Y2O3-SiC Composite Membrane

  • $Y_2O_3$-SiC composite membrane was dip-coated using $Y_2O_3$ sol solution; this membrane was compared with a non- coated one. Each membrane was characterized by XRD, FE-SEM and BET techniques. Hydrogen and CO permeation were tested with self-manufactured Sievert's type equipment. $Y_2O_3$ coating was enhanced for the selectivity of the membrane ($H_2$ versus CO). The hydrogen permeation was measured at 1 bar with increasing temperatures. In case of the coated membrane, hydrogen permeation was found to be $1.24{\times}10^{-7}mol/m^2sPa$ with perm-selectivity of 4.26 at 323 K.

  • Mullite/zirconia composite was synthesized by adding zirconia and Zircon to mixture of Hapcheon kaolin(grade pink A) and aluminium nitrate salt in order to enhance strength of the mullite specimens. Kaolin and aluminium nitrate salt was mixed milled and calcined at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and then 5wt% mullite seed was added to increase mullite content. The influence of the additives(ZrO2 and ZrSiO4) and sintering temperature on the strength of the sintered specimens was investigated. The flexural strength of the specimens containing 10wt% zirconia was enhanced from 150MPa without the additive up to 300MPa after heat treatment at 156$0^{\circ}C$ In the case of addition of 15wt% zircon the strength of the specimens systhesized at 1$600^{\circ}C$ was 225 MPa.

반응소결 SiC-graphite 복합체의 마찰마모특성 (Tribological Properties of Raction-Bonded SiC-Graphite Composites)

  • The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as mechanical seal slurry valve disc and so on. In this study the effect of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of RBSC/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by adding graphite powder to the mixture of SiC powder metallic siliconcarbon black and alumina. Bending strength water absorption friction coefficient the amount of worn out material at a certain time and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured and crystalline phases were examined with XRD. The composite containing 5 vol% graphite powder showed improved bending strength due to high green density and decreased friction coefficient and wear resistance. The friction coefficient and the wear resistance of the composite were increased by adding graphite powder up to 10 vol% They decreased however as increasing the amount of graphite powder more that 10vol% There was no linear relationship between the tribological properties and bending strength of the composites.

  • Warm compaction powder metallurgy was used to produce a $Ti_3SiC_2$ particulate reinforced Cu matrix composite. Fabrication parameters and warm compaction behaviors of Cu powder were studied. Based on the optimized fabrication parameters a Cu-based electrical contact material was prepared. Results showed that in expend of some electrical conductivity, addition of $Ti_3SiC_2$ particulate increased the hardness, wear resistivity and anti-friction ability of the sintered Cu-base material.

  • Dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC composite was synthesized by high-frequency induction-heated combustion synthesis(HFIHCS) method within 2 minutes in one step from elemental powder mixture of W, Si and C. Simultaneous combustion synthesis and densification were accomplished under the combined effects of an induced current and mechanical pressure. Highly dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC with relative density of up to 97% was produced under simultaneous application of 60MPa pressure and the induced current. The average grain size of $WSi_2$ was about $5.2{\mu}m$. The hardness and fracture toughness values obtained were 1700kg/$mm^2$ and $4.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

Hydrogen Permeation of SiC-CeO2 Composite Membrane by Dip-coating Process

  • A SiC-$CeO_2$ composite membrane was successfully fabricated using an ally-hydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS) binder and treated by dip-coating at 60 times with a $CeO_2$ sol solution. The dip-coated SiC membrane was calcined at 773 K and then sintered at 1173 K under an air atmosphere. The coated membrane was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and a BET surface analysis. The difference in permeation performance between $H_2$ and CO gases was measured by varying the temperature. The permeation flux of $H_2$ on the SiC membrane with layered $CeO_2$ was obtained as $8.45{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The CO permeation flux was $2.64{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) for the hydrogen permeation process was calculated as -7.82 J/mol by Arrhenius plots.

  • The pretreatment condition for uniform distribution of SiC whisker in A2O3-SiCw composites has been determined and the mechanical properties of the composites with various whisker contents have been measured. Good dispersion of the whisker can be obtained in a solution of pH=10.45 by ball milling and ultrasonic treatment. The relative density of hot pressed composites decreases with the whisker content up to 40vol%, but is found to be satisfactory, over 98% for all samples. The mechanical property of the composites is sensitive to the whisker dispersion. Uniform distributjion of the whisker is critical in order to guarantee good mechanical property.The samples containing 20~30vol% whisker show the best mechanical property within the studied range.
