LSM powder material for an oxygen-electrode(anode) of High Temperature Steam Electrolysis (RISE) was synthesized by a Modified-Glycine nitrate process(GNP). Amount of nitric acid and its concentration was varied to find out an appropriate composition for the oxygen-electrode(anode). In order to optimize the amount of Glycine used as an oxidant of self-combustion process, the ratio of Glycine to Anion was varied. $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3$, $La_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_3$, and $La_{0.2}Sr_{0.8}MnO_3$ were synthesized in this study. Those LSM were dried for overnight to remove moisture from the material at $110^{\circ}C$ and were calcined 2 hours at $650^{\circ}C$ and were sintered in a furnace for 5 hours at $1400^{\circ}C$. Their structures, surface morphologies, surface areas, and weight changes were investigated with XRD, SEM, BET, and TG/DTA. The best perovskite phase for the oxygen-electrode of HTSE was obtained with $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3$ formula in which 100 ml of 3M nitric acid was used in the preparation of its formula. The optimized ratio of Glycine to Anion was 2.
A measurement has been made for the radioactivities (or concentrations) of radon daughters, i.e., RaA, RaB and RaC in airborne dust by means of single filtering method. This is to evaluate the radioactivities in terms of Ci or WL (working level) from gross alpha counts measured in the selected-time intervals after an air sample is taken from a membrane filter paper with a mean pore size of $0.8{\mu}m$. This work involves determinations of standard deviation in radioactivities, radioactive equilibrium factor and ratio. It appears that a concentration of total radon daughters is $0.30{\sim}2.36pCi/l\;or\;0.89{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.57{\times}10^{-3}WL$, depending on the sampling time. Generally the highest concentration was observed around nine o'clock in a day while the lowest value was obtained around seventeen o'clock. Standard deviations based on counting statistics of RaA's, RaB's and RaC's concentrations are ${\pm}57.75%,\;{\pm}22.32%\;and\;{\pm}31.29%$, respectively. It is revealed that the radioactive equilibrium factor is 0.322 while the radioactive equilibrium ratio is of pattern $C_1>C_2>C_3$ in general. Here $C_1,\;C_2\;and\;C_3$ stand for concentrations of RaA,RaB and RaC, respectively.

To investigate the acid tolerance characteristics of the acid-resistant mutant, Leuconostoc paramesenteroides P-200, as a kimchi starter, this study examine proton permeability, ATPase activity, glycolysis activity, $Mg^{2+}$ release, and membrane fatty acid composition, and compared the data to that of its wild-type, L. paramesenteroides LP-W. In the proton permeability experiment, the LP-W and P-200 strains' average maximum half-time $(t_{1/2})$ values for pH equilibration through the cell membrane were approximately 5.7 and 9.3 min in 150mM KCl solution, and 4.2 and 8.3 min in 3% NaCl solution, respectively. Their values and pH levels for maximal specific ATPase activity showed that P-200 had greater activity than LPW. And the results of pH-dependent glycolysis activity showed that P-200 had greater activity than LP-W. Furthermore, after 2 hr at pH 4.0, LP-W and P-200 had percent magnesium release values of approximately 12% and 34%, respectively. A comparison of their membrane fatty acid compositions indicated that C18 and cyclo-C19 were the major different fatty acids between the two strains, and their contents of C18 and cyclo-C19 were 2.5% and not detected, respectively, in LP-W, and 6.4% and 11.4%, respectively, in P-200. These results indicate that the P-200 strain has significantly improved acid tolerance as compared to its wild type, LP-W.

In this study, the mechanical properties of a Ti thin film are measured by a bulge test. In the bulge test, uniform pressure is applied to one side of the film. Measurement of the membrane deflection as a function of the applied pressure allows one to determine the mechanical properties of the film. Ti thin films with thicknesses of 1.0, 1.5, and $2.0{\mu}m$ were deposited on a Si wafer by using an RF magnetron sputtering system. These specimens were annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ for 150, 300, and 600 s to investigate the effect of temperature on the yield stress and mechanical properties of the Ti films. The elastic modulus, residual stress, and yield stress of these membranes are measured by a bulge test. The experimental results suggest that the yield stress is sensitive to the film thickness and annealing time.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) is a serine/threonine protein kinase that is known to mediate cancer cell death. Here, we show that B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), an anti-apoptotic protein, is regulated by GSK-3β and that GSK-3β-mediated regulation of Bcl-2 is crucial for mitochondrial-dependent cell death in paclitaxel-stimulated cells. We demonstrate that MCF7 GSK-3β siRNA cells are more sensitive to cell death than MCF7 GFP control cells and that in the absence of GSK-3β, Bcl-2 levels are reduced, a result enhanced by paclitaxel. Paclitaxel-induced JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase) activation is critical for Bcl-2 modulation. In the absence of GSK-3β, Bcl-2 was unstable in an ubiquitination-dependent manner in both basal- and paclitaxel-treated cells. Furthermore, we demonstrate that GSK-3β-mediated regulation of Bcl-2 influences cytochrome C release and mitochondrial membrane potential. Taken together, our data suggest that GSK-3β-dependent regulation of Bcl-2 is crucial for mitochondria-dependent cell death in paclitaxel-mediated breast cancer therapy. A planar Bi-Sb multijunction thermal converter with high thermal sensitivity and small ac-dc transfer error has been fabricated by preparing the bifilar thin film Pt-heater and the hot junctions of thin film Bi-Sb thermopile on the $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si_{3}N_{4}$-diaphragm, which functions as a thermal isolation layer, and the cold junctions on the dielectric membrane supported with the Si-substrate, which acts as a heat sink, and its ac-dc transfer characteristics were investigated with the fast reversed dc method. The respective thermal sensitivities of the converter with single bifilar heater were about 10.1 mV/mW and 14.8 mV/mW in the air and vacuum, and those of the converter with dual bifilar heater were about 5.1 mV/mW and 7.6 mV/mW, and about 5.3 mV/mW and 7.8 mV/mW in the air and vacuum for the inputs of inside and outside heaters, indicating that the thermal sensitivities in the vacuum, where there is rarely thermal loss caused by gas, are higher than those in the air. The ac-dc voltage and current transfer difference ranges of the converter with single bifilar heater were about ${\pm}1.80\;ppm$ and ${\pm}0.58\;ppm$, and those of the converter with dual bifilar heater were about ${\pm}0.63\;ppm$ and ${\pm}0.25\;ppm$, and about ${\pm}0.53\;ppm$ and ${\pm}0.27\;ppm$, respectively, for the inputs of inside and outside heaters, in the frequency range below 10 kHz and in the air.
The nylon (poly 6, 10) microcapsules containing ${\beta}-galactosidase$ were obtained by the interfacial polymerization of 1, 6-diaminohexane and sebacoyl chloride with ${\beta}-galactosidase$ from Escherichia coli. They were generally spherical and had a mean diameter of $80{\mu}$ with 45 % of the activity recovery. In particular, there was no transport hamper of lactose through the membrane of microcapsules. The characteristics of the microencapsulated enzyme were similar to those of soluble enzyme optimal pHs, $7.0{\sim}7.2$ for the soluble and $7.3{\sim}7.5$ for the microencapsulated ; optimal temperatures, $50^{\circ}C$ for both ; apparent $K_m,\;3.33{\times}10^{-4}(on ONPG),$$2.86{\times}10^{-3}$ M(on lactose) for the soluble and $5.28{\times}10^{-4}$ (on ONPG), $4.25{\times}10^{-3}$ M (on lactose) for the microencapsulated ; activation energies, 8.94 for the soluble and 9.78 Kcal/mole for the microencapsulated enzyme. Using this microencapsulated ${\beta}-galactosidase$, hydrolyses of lactose and milk lactose were carried out and 80 % of 5 % lactose solution and 70 % of lactose in skim milk were hydrolyzed in 40 hr at $27^{\circ}C$. The reusability and operational stability showed that the remaining activity was 50 % of the original activity after 5 runs and 120 hr of total operating time at $27^{\circ}C$.
Properties of acid tolerance of an adipic acid-resistant mutant, Leuconostoc paramesenteroides (ANaP100) were studied and compared with those of its paired wild type of Leu. paramesenteroides (LPw). The value of protons permeability of LPw after an acid shock at pH 5.0 was 4.3 min, while the value of ANaP100 was 4.8 min at the same pH. The maximal specific activities of ATPase of LPw and ANaP100 were 0.59 unit/mg protein and 0.63 unit/mg protein at pH 6.0, respectively. The release of magnesium ion from the mutant strain was about 27.3% at pH 4 after 2 hrs, while the wild strain was about 52.2% under the same conditions. The contents of $C_{19:0,cyclo}$ and $C_{18:1}$ in a membrane fatty acid of ANaP100 and LPw were higher and lower, respectively, than that of LPw. These results indicated that acid tolerance of ANaP100 was improved in comparison with that of its wild type, LPw.
Co-application of organic coating and cathodic protection has not provided enough durability to low-alloyed steels inseawater ballast tank (SBT) environments. An attempt has made to study the effect of alloy elements (Al, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Si, W) on general and localized corrosion resistance of steels as basic research to develop new low-allowed steels resistive to corrosion in SBT environments. For this study, we measured the corrosion rate by the weigh loss method after periodic immersion in synthetic seawater at $60^{\circ}C$, evaluated the localized corrosion resistance by an immersion test in concentrated chloride solution with the critical pH depending on the alloy element (Fe, Cr, Al, Ni), determined the permeability of chloride ion across the rust layer by measuring the membrane potential, and finally, we analyzed the rust layer by EPMA mapping and compared the result with the E-pH diagram calculated in the study. The immersion test of up to 55 days in the synthetic seawater showed that chromium, aluminium, and nickel are beneficial but the other elements are detrimental to corrosion resistance. Among the beneficial elements, chromium and aluminium effectively decreased the corrosion rate of the steels during the initial immersion, while nickel effectively decreased the corrosion rate in a longer than 30-day immersion. The low corrosion rate of Cr- or Al-alloyed steel in the initial period was due to the formation of $Cr_2FeO_4$ or $Al_2FeO_4$, respectively -the predicted oxide in the E-pH diagram- which is known as a more protective oxide than $Fe_3O_4$. The increased corrosion rate of Cr-alloyed steels with alonger than 30-day exposure was due to low localized corrosion resistance, which is explained bythe effect of the alloying element on a critical pH. In the meantime, the low corrosion rate of Ni-alloyed steel with a longer than 30-day exposure wasdue to an Ni enriched layer containing $Fe_2NiO_4$, the predicted oxide in the E-pH diagram. Finally, the measurement of the membrane potential depending on the alloying element showed that a lower permeability of chloride ion does not always result in higher corrosion resistance in seawater.

Objective : Accumulation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE) and mitochondrial glycation is importantly implicated in the pathological changes of the brain associated with diabetic complications, Alzheimer disease, and aging. The present study was undertaken to determine whether sildenafil, a type 5 phosphodiesterase type (PDE-5) inhibitor, has beneficial effect on neuronal cells challenged with AGE-induced oxidative stress to preserve their mitochondrial functional integrity. Methods : HT-22 hippocampal neuronal cells were exposed to AGE and changes in the mitochondrial functional parameters were determined. Pretreatment of cells with sildenafil effectively ameliorated these AGE-induced deterioration of mitochondrial functional integrity. Results : AGE-treated cells lost their mitochondrial functional integrity which was estimated by their MTT reduction ability and intracellular ATP concentration. These cells exhibited stimulated generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential, induction of mitochondrial permeability transition, and release of the cytochrome C, activation of the caspase-3 accompanied by apoptosis. Western blot analyses and qRT-PCR demonstrated that sildenafil increased the expression level of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). CoPP and bilirubin, an inducer of HO-1 and a metabolic product of HO-1, respectively, provided a similar protective effects. On the contrary, the HO-1 inhibitor ZnPP IX blocked the effect of sildenafil. Transfection with HO-1 siRNA significantly reduced the protective effect of sildenafil on the loss of MTT reduction ability and MPT induction in AGE-treated cells. Conclusion : Taken together, our results suggested that sildenafil provides beneficial effect to protect the HT-22 hippocampal neuronal cells against AGE-induced deterioration of mitochondrial integrity, and upregulation of HO-1 is involved in the underlying mechanism.
