A study on the fabrication of poly crystalline Si wafer by vacuum casting method and the measurement of the efficiency of solar cell

  • Si-wafers for solar cells were cast in a size of $50{\times}46{\times}0.5{\textrm}{mm}^3$ by vacuum casting method. The graphite mold coated by BN powder, which was to prevent the reaction of carbon with the molten silicon, was used. Without coating, the wetting and reaction of Si melt to graphite mold was very severe. In the case of BN coating, SiC was formed in the shape of tiny islands at the surface of Si wafer by the reaction between Si-melt and carbon of the graphite mold on the high temperature. The grain size was about 1 mm. The efficiency of Si solar cell was lower than that of Si solar cell fabricated on commercial single and poly crystalline Si wafer. The reason of low efficiency was discussed.

Cutting Performance of Ti-Al-Si-N Coated Endmill for High-Hardened materials by Hybrid Coating System (하이브리드 코팅에 의한 고경도 소재용 Ti-Al-Si-N코팅 엔드밀의 절삭성능평가)

  • Hard coatings are known to improve the performance of cutting tools in aggressive machining applications, such as high speed machining. New superhard Ti-Al-Si-W films, characterized by a nanocomposite nano-sized (Ti,Al,Si)N crystallites embedded in amorphous $Si_3 N_4$ matrix, could be successfully synthesized on WC-Co substrates by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating(AIP) and sputtering method. The hardness of Ti-Al-Si-N film increased with incorporation of Si, and had the maximum value ~50 GPa at the Si content of 9 at.%, respectively. And the X-ray diffraction patterns of Ti-Al-Si-N films with various Si content is investigated. In this study, Ti-Al-Si-N coatings were applied to end-mill tools made of WC-Co material by a hybrid coating system. Cutting tests fir the high-hardened material (STD11,$H_R$)C62 and their performances in high speed cutting conditions were studied. Also, the tool wear and tool lift of Ti-Al-Si-N with various si(6, 9, 19) contents were measured.

Wetting improvement of SiC/Al Metal Matrix Composite by Cu Surface Treatment (보강재에 도금된 Cu층이 Al/SiC복합재료의 젖음성에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of coating treatment of metallic Cu film on SiC for Al/SiC composite were studied. The Copper was deposited on SiC by electroless plating method. Al/sic composite was fabricated at temperature range of $670^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$ under vacuum atmosphere. The wetting behavior of Al/SiC composite were analysed by SEM and XRD. The coating treatment on SiC improved wettability of Al melt on SiC considerably comparing to the non coated SiC. This improved wettability seems strongly concerned to the increase of chemical reactivity between coated layer and Al matrix. The improvement of wettability of Al melt on the Cu coated SiC was closely related to in the initial stage of reaction. The metallic film played an important role in reducing the interfacial free energy and breaking down the aluminum oxide film through the reaction with Al melt. The wetting behavior of the as-received SiC with Al melt was not uniform, indicated by the contact angles from less than $97^{\circ}$to more than $97^{\circ}$.

  • Very High Temperature gas cooler Reactor (VHTR) has been considered as one of the most promising nuclear reactor because of many advantages including high inherent safety to avoid environmental pollution, high thermal efficiency and the role of secondary energy source. The TRISO coated fuel particles used in VHTR are composed of 4 layers as OPyC, SiC, IPyC and buffer PyC. The significance of CVD-SiC coatings used in tri-isotropic(TRISO) nuclear coated fuel particles is to maintain the strength of the whole particle. Various methods have been proposed to evaluate the mechanical properties of CVD-SiC film at room temperature. However, few works have been attempted to characterize properties of CVD-SiC film at high temperature. In this study, micro tensile system was newly developed for mechanical characterization of SiC thin film at elevated temperature. Two kinds of CVD-SiC films were prepared for micro tensile test. SiC-A had [111]-preferred orientation, while SiC-B had [220]-preferred orientation. The free silicon was co-deposited in SiC-B coating layer. The fracture strength of two different CVD-SiC films was characterized up to $1000^{\circ}C$.The strength of SiC-B film decreased with temperature. This result can be explained by free silicon, observed in SiC-B along the columnar boundaries by TEM. The presence of free silicon causes strength degradation. Also, larger Weibull-modulus was measured. The new method can be used for thin film material at high temperature.

A Study on MgF$_2$/CeO$_2$ AR Coating of Mono-Crystalline Silicon Solar Cell (단결정 실리콘 태양전지의 MgF$_2$/CeO$_2$ 반사 방지막에 환한 연구)

  • This paper presents a process optimization of antireflection (AR) coating on crystalline Si solar cells. Theoretical and experimental investigations were performed on a double-layer AR (DLAR) coating of MgF$_2$/CeO$_2$. We investigated CeO$_2$ films as an AR layer because they have a proper refractive index of 2.46 and demonstrate the same lattice constant as Si substrate. RF sputter grown CeO$_2$ film showed strong dependence on a deposition temperature. The CeO$_2$ deposited at 40$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited a strong (111) preferred orientation and the lowest surface roughness of 6.87 $\AA$. Refractive index of MgF$_2$ film was measured as 1.386 for the most of growth temperature. An optimized DLAR coating showed a reflectance as low as 2.04% in the wavelengths ranged from 0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. We achieved the efficiencies of solar cells greater than 15% with 3.12% improvement with DLAR coatings. Further details on MgF$_2$, CeO$_2$ films, and cell fabrication parameters are presented in this paper.

High-Temperature Fracture Strength of a CVD-SiC Coating Layer for TRISO Nuclear Fuel Particles by a Micro-Tensile Test

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) coatings for tri-isotropic (TRISO) nuclear fuel particles were fabricated using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process onto graphite. A micro-tensile-testing system was developed for the mechanical characterization of SiC coatings at high temperatures. The fracture strength of the SiC coatings was characterized by the developed micro-tensile test in the range of $25^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. Two types of CVD-SiC films were prepared for the micro-tensile test. SiC-A exhibited a large grain size (0.4 ~ 0.6 m) and the [111] preferred orientation, while SiC-B had a small grain size (0.2 ~ 0.3 mm) and the [220] preferred orientation. Free silicon (Si) was co-deposited onto SiC-B, and stacking faults also existed in the SiC-B structure. The fracture strengths of the CVD-SiC coatings, as measured by the high-temperature micro-tensile test, decreased with the testing temperature. The high-temperature fracture strengths of CVD-SiC coatings were related to the microstructure and defects of the CVD-SiC coatings.

  • The effects of urea addition and reaction conditions were examined in the prepareation of zirconia coated SiC whiskers through surface precipitation taking place during high-temperature aging of Zr(SO4)2 solutions containing the whiskers. More dense zirconia-hydrate was precipitated on the surfaces of the whiskers in the presence of urea. The ratio of the concentration of Zr(SO4)2 to the amount of added whiskers was the most important factor to confine the precipitation of zirconia-hydrate only at the surfaces of the whiskers The from of the coating layers was unchanged after heat-treatment leading to the dehydration and crystallization of the layers.

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Superhard Cr-Si-C-N Coatings Prepared by a Hybrid Coating System (하이브리드 코팅 시스템으로 제조된 초고경도 Cr-Si-C-N 나노복합 코팅막의 미세구조 및 기계적 특성)

  • Cr-Si-C-N coatings were deposited on steel substrate (SKD 11) by a hybrid system of arc ion plating (AIP) and sputtering techniques. From XRD, XPS, and HRTEM analyses, it was found that Cr-Si-C-N had a fine composite microstructure comprising nano-sized crystallites of Cr(C, N) well distributed in the amorphous phase of $Si_3N_4/SiC$ mixture. Microhardness of Cr(C, N) coatings and Cr-Si-N coatings were reported about $\~22 GPa$ and $\~35 GPa$, respectively. As the Si was incorporated into Cr(C, N) coatings, The Cr-Si-C-N coatings having a Si content of $9.2 at.\%$ showed the maximum hardness value. As increased beyond Si content of $9.2 at.\%$, the interaction between nanocrystallites and amorphous phase was gone, the hardness was reduced as dependent on amorphous phase of $Si_3N_4/SiC$. In addition, the average coefficient of Cr-Si-C-N coatings largely decreased compared with Cr(C, N) coatings.

  • A wear behavior of electroless (Ni-P-X, X: SiC, $Al_2O_3$, Diamond) composite coating layers, formed under various conditions on commerical grade low carbon steel, has been investigated using Taber abrasion tester and scanning electron microscope. Several factors, which are type of particles, co-deposited content, particle size, distribution of particles and heat-treatment, influenced the wear resistance. The wear resistance of the composited coating layers after heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was increased 70 times with diamond, 15 times with SiC and 8 times with $Al_2O_3$, compared with the electroless nickel plating layer without heat-treatment.

Manufacturing of Ni-Cr-B-Si + WC/12Co Composite Coating Layer Using Laser Cladding Process and its Mechanical Properties (레이저 클래딩 공정을 이용한 Ni-Cr-B-Si + WC/12Co 복합 코팅층의 제조 및 기계적 특성)

  • In this study we manufacture a Ni-Cr-B-Si +WC/12Co composite coating layer on a Cu base material using a laser cladding (LC) process, and investigate the microstructural and mechanical properties of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers (reference material). The initial powder used for the LC coating layer is a powder feedstock with an average particle size of $125{\mu}m$. To identify the microstructural and mechanical properties, OM, SEM, XRD, room and high temperature hardness, and wear tests are implemented. Microstructural observation of the initial powder and LC coating layer confirm the layer is composed mainly of ${\gamma}-Ni$ phases and WC and $Cr_{23}C_6$ carbides. The measured hardness of the LC coating and Ni electroplating layers are 653 and 154 Hv, respectively. The hardness measurement from room up to high temperatures of $700^{\circ}C$ result in a hardness decrease as the temperature increases, but the hardness of the LC coating layer is higher for all temperature conditions. Room temperature wear results show that the wear loss of the LC coating layer is 1/12 of the wear level of the Ni electroplating layer. The measured bond strength is also greater in the LC coating than the Ni electroplating.
