  • GaN nanoparticles were synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process on $SiO_2$substrate after irradiating the surface of the GaN sintered pellet by the ArF (193 nm) excimer laser. At this moment Ar gas pressure of 100 Pa, 50 Pa, 10 Pa and 1 Pa were applied during the ablation process and laser power of 100 mJ and 200 mJ were also applied. The synthesized fan nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and optical absorption spectra. The synthesized GaN nanoparticles had the crystallite sizes of 20~30 nm, and besides, GaN nanoparticles synthesized under low Ar gas pressure compared to the others corresponded with stoichiometry, and the optical band edge of the GaN nanoparticles was blueshifted.

  • Buckling and post-buckling behaviors of geometrically imperfect annular sector plates made from nanoparticle reinforced composites have been investigated. Two types of nanoparticles are considered including graphene oxide powders (GOPs) and silicone oxide (SiO2). Nanoparticles are considered to have uniform and functionally graded distributions within the matrix and the material properties are derived using Halpin-Tsai procedure. Annular sector plate is formulated based upon thin shell theory considering geometric nonlinearity and imperfectness. After solving the governing equations via Galerkin's technique, it is showed that the post-buckling curves of annular sector plates rely on the geometric imperfection, nanoparticle type, amount of nanoparticles, sector inner/outer radius and sector open angle.

  • Simple and useful synthetic process to control the morphology of block copolymers (BCPs) is required for implementation in various device applications. However, the conventional method to use colloidal templates is not enough to realize the production of pure and massive core-shell nanoparticles due to the cost-intensive complex process. Here, we introduce a novel and facile synthesis method to realize the formation of core-shell $SiO_x$ nanoparticle power by employing an immersion annealing of a sphere-forming poly(styrene-b-dimethylsiloxane) (PS-b-PDMS) BCP. We successfully obtained a PS-encapsulated $SiO_x$ nanoparticle with a diameter of ~20 nm. In addition, we analyzed how the mixing ratio of heptane/ethanol affects the BCP morphology of self-assembled PS-b-PDMS nanoparticles, showing a worm-like structure under the optimum immersion conditions. This useful approach is expected to be extendable to other solvent-based BCP synthesis, providing a new guideline for unique BCP production.

  • We examined the effect of low temperature heat-treatment on the optical properties of the photonic crystals self-assembled using a monodispersed spherical $SiO_2$ nanoparticle. When the heat treatment temperature increased, the reflectance peak, which is induced by the photonic band gap, moved to a shorter wavelength direction, and the peak intensity of Fabry-Perot fringes also increased. The highest reflectance peak intensity was obtained in the sample heat-treated at $250\~300^{\circ}C$. The heat-treatment reduced the average particle size and the quantity of defects, and increased the packing density of the photonic crystal.

  • Core-shell structured nanoparticles are garnering attention because these nanoparticles are expected to have a wide range of applications. The objective of the present study is to improve the coating efficiency of gold shell formed on the surface of silica nanoparticles for $SiO_2@Au$ core-shell structure. For the efficient coating of gold shell, we attempt an in-situ synthesis method such that the nuclei of the gold nanoparticles are generated and grown on the surface of silica nanoparticles. This method can effectively form a gold shell as compared to the conventional method of attaching gold nanoparticles to silica particles. It is considered possible to form a dense gold shell because the problems caused by electrostatic repulsion between the gold nanoparticles in the conventional method are eliminated.

  • To enhance the performance of photovoltaic a-Si:H solar cells with a hybrid-type light absorbing structure of single crystal silicon nanoparticles (Si NPs) in a-Si:H matrix, single crystal Si NPs were produced by laser pyrolysis. The Si NPs were synthesized by $SiH_4$ gas decomposition using a $CO_2$ laser. The properties of Si NPs were controlled by process parameters such as $CO_2$ laser power, reactive gas pressure, and $H_2/SiH_4$ gas flows. The crystalline properties and sizes of Si NPs were analyzed by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The sizes of Si NPs were controllable in the range of 5-15 nm in diameter and the effects of process parameters of laser pyrolysis were systematically investigated.

  • This paper presents the Raman scattering characteristics of poly (polycrystalline) 3C-SiC thin films deposited on AlN buffer layer by atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) using hexamethyldisilane (MHDS) and carrier gases (Ar + $H_2$).The Raman spectra of SiC films deposited on AlN layer of before and after annealings were investigated according to the growth temperature of 3C-SiC. Two strong Raman peaks, which mean that poly 3C-SiC admixed with nanoparticle graphite, were measured in them. The biaxial stress of poly 3C-SiC/AlN was calculated as 896 MPa from the Raman shifts of 3C-SiC deposited at $1180^{\circ}C$ on AlN of after annealing.

  • The present work has been devoted to the catalytic reduction of $N_2O$ by $H_2$ with $Pt/SiO_2$ catalysts at very low temperatures, such as $110^{\circ}C$, and their nanoparticle sizes have been determined by using $H_2-N_2O$ titration, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM) measurements. A sample of 1.72% $Pt/SiO_2$, which had been prepared by an ion exchange method, consisted of almost atomic levels of Pt nanoparticles with 1.16 nm that are very consistent with the HRTEM measurements, while a $Pt/SiO_2$ catalyst possessing the same Pt amount via an incipient wetness technique did 13.5 nm particles as determined by the XRD measurements. These two catalysts showed a noticeable difference in the on-stream $deN_2O$ activity maintenance profiles at $110^{\circ}C$. This discrepancy was associated with the nanoparticle sizes, i.e., the $Pt/SiO_2$ catalyst with the smaller particle size was much more active for the $N_2O$ reduction. When repeated measurements of the $N_2O$ reduction with the 1.16 nm Pt catalyst at $110^{\circ}C$ were allowed, the catalyst deactivation occurred, depending somewhat on regeneration excursions.

  • Single-crystalline silicon nanowire arrays (SiNWAs) using electroless metal-assisted etchings of p-type silicon were successfully fabricated. Ag nanoparticle deposition on silicon wafers in HF solution acted as a localized micro-electrochemical redox reaction process in which both anodic and cathodic process took place simultaneously at the silicon surface to give SiNWAs. The growth effect of SiNWs was investigated by changing of etching times. The morphologies of SiNWAs were obtained by SEM observation. Well-aligned nanowire arrays perpendicular to the surface of the silicon substrate were produced. Optical characteristics of SiNWs were measured by FT-IR spectroscopy and indicated that the surface of SiNWs are terminated with hydrogen. The thicknesses and lengths of SiNWs are typically 150-250 nm and 2 to 5 microns, respectively.
