The objective of this study was to investigate non-point sources (NPS) pollution and prioritize management areas affected by NPS pollution in the Saemangeum Watershed. AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) technique was selected to prioritize sub-watersheds for effectively managing NPS pollution in this study areas. Generation properties of NPS pollution, discharge properties of NPS pollution, and runoff properties of NPS pollution were selected and set for AHP. Weighted descriptors including indicators like numbers of livestock, land- and livestock-system loads, rainfall, and impervious area ratio were generalized from 0 to 1 and multiply each index based on screened 17 survey data. The results were visualized as maps which enable resource managers to identify sub-watersheds for effective improving water quality. The sub-watersheds located in Gongdeok-Myeon, Yongji-Myeon, Hwangsan-Myeon of Gimje-Si were selected for managing NPS pollution control areas. This result presented that these sub-watershed are more affected by the pollution from livestock-system than from land-system. The finding from this study can be used to screen sub-watersheds that need further assessment by managers and decision-makers within the study area.
In this study, we fabricated hierarchically self-assembled thin films composed of graphene oxide (GO) sheets and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) techniques and investigated their gas-sensing performance. First, a thermally oxidized silicon wafer ($Si/SiO_2$) was hydrophobized by depositing the LB films of cadmium arachidate. Thin films of ligand-capped Au NPs and GO sheets of the appropriate size were then sequentially transferred onto the hydrophobic silicon wafer using the LB and the LS techniques, respectively. Several different films were prepared by varying the ligand type, film composition, and surface pressure of the spread monolayer at the air/water interface. Their structures were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), and their gas-sensing performance for $NH_3$ and $CO_2$ was assessed. The thin films of dodecanethiol-capped Au NPs and medium-sized GO sheets had a better hierarchical structure with higher uniformity and exhibited better gas-sensing performance.
Confined Pt and $CoFe_2O_4$ nanoparticles (NPs) in a mesoporous core/shell silica microsphere, Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$, were prepared using a bi-functional linker molecule. A large number of Pt NPs in Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$, ranging from 5 to 8 nm, are embedded into the shell and some of them are in close contact with $CoFe_2O_4$ NPs. The hydrogenation of cyclohexene over the Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$ microsphere at $25^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm of $H_2$ yields cyclohexane as a major product. In addition, it gives oxygenated products. Control experiments with $^{18}O$-labelled water and acetone suggest that surface-bound oxygen atoms in $CoFe_2O_4$ are associated with the formation of the oxygenated products. This oxidation reaction is operative only if $CoFe_2O_4$ and Pt NPs are in close contact. The Pt-$CoFe_2O_4$@meso-$SiO_2$ catalyst is separated simply by a magnet, which can be re-used without affecting the catalytic efficiency.
Thermal shock and hot corrosion resistance of silicon nitride ceramics are investigated in this study. Silicon nitrides are fabricated by nitride pressureless sintering (NPS) process, which process is the continuous process of nitridation reaction of Si metal combined with subsequent pressureless sintering. The results of thermal shock test show it sustains 400MPa of initial strength during test in the designated condition of ${\Delta}T=700{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ up to maximum 4,800 cycles. Hot corrosion tests also reveal that the strength degradation of NPS silicon nitride did not occur at $700^{\circ}C$ with an exposure in Ar, $H_2$, Na and K for 1,275 h.

Background: Small interfering RNA technology has been considered a prospective alternative antiviral treatment using gene silencing against influenza viruses with high mutations rates. On the other hand, there are no reports on its effectiveness against the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus isolated from Indonesia. Objectives: The main objective of this study was to improve the siRNA design based on the nucleoprotein gene (siRNA-NP) for the Indonesian H5N1 virus. Methods: The effectiveness of these siRNA-NPs (NP672, NP1433, and NP1469) was analyzed in vitro in Marbin-Darby canine kidney cells. Results: The siRNA-NP672 caused the largest decrease in viral production and gene expression at 24, 48, and 72 h post-infection compared to the other siRNA-NPs. Moreover, three serial passages of the H5N1 virus in the presence of siRNA-NP672 did not induce any mutations within the nucleoprotein gene. Conclusions: These findings suggest that siRNA-NP672 can provide better protection against the Indonesian strain of the H5N1 virus.
In this paper, a $ZnO/SiO_2$ nano-composite was prepared by a simple chemical method at room temperature. For the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), a sonochemical method was used, and $SiO_2$ NPs were prepared by precipitation method. The formation of $ZnO/SiO_2$ NCs was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy(FT-IR). The photocatalytic properties of $ZnO/SiO_2$ NCs formed at different concentrations of $SiO_2$ were evaluated by rhodamine-B dye. It was confirmed that increasing $SiO_2$ concentration resulted in an increase in the photocatalytic property. In addition, the antibacterial activity of $ZnO/SiO_2$ NCs was conducted against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). As a result, the antibacterial activities of E.coli and S. aureus were increased in the presence of thick SiO NPs layer.
Oxidtion behavior of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ ceramics with the different porosity by the Nitrided Pressureless Sintering (NPS) were investigated in pure oxygen gas atmosphere at 1000 to $1300^{circ}C$. The thickness of formed oxide film on the surface of silicon nitride ceramics was increased with oxidation time and temperature. The oxide film thickness of 5A5Y5Si and 5A5Y10Si specimens for 100 h at 1300^{circ}C$ was about 10 $\mu$m and 20 $\mu$m, respectively. The oxidation of 5A5Y5Si and 5A5Y10Si specimens follows the parabolic behavior with an apparent activation energy of 215 kJ/mol and 104 kJ/mol, respectively. The flexural strength of 5A5Y5Si specimens after oxidation test for 500 h at 1300^{circ}C were maintained as-received value of 500 ma. On the other hand, that of 5A5Y10Si specimens were decreased about 100 MPa in as-received value.
We investigated the influences of Ag nanoparticle (NP) arrays and surface nanohole (NH) patterns on the optical characteristics of 10-${\mu}m$-thick c-Si wafers using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. In particular, we comparatively studied the plasmonic effects of both monomer arrays (MA) and heptamer arrays (HA) consisting of identical Ag NPs. HA improved the optical absorption of the c-Si wafers in much wider wavelength range than MA, with the help of hybridized plasmon modes. The light trapping capability of the NH array pattern is superior to that of the Ag plasmonic NPs. We also found that the addition of the Ag HA on the wafers with surface NH patterns further enhanced optical absorption: the expected short-circuit current density was as high as $34.96mA/cm^2$.
We present a rapid biogenic method for the production of nanoscale gold particles using pear extract. The formation and stability of pear-derived gold nanoparticles (Pear-AuNPs) were monitored by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Their morphology, elemental composition and crystalline phase were determined by transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction. The average core size of crystalline Pear-AuNPs was in the range of $10{\pm}5\;nm$ and the observed morphology was spherical. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum showed a strong peak for the pure 'Au' phase. The circular dichroism spectrum indicated the natural capping ability of the pear extract, which generated peptide-gold nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were stable in aqueous solution for two months. A cell viability assay of Pear-AuNPs showed biocompatibility with human embryonic kidney 293 cells. Accordingly, this eco-friendly process for the bio-mimetic production of Pear-AuNPs is nontoxic in nature; consequently, it will find potential application in nano-biotechnology.

AgNPs (silver nanoparticles) has been widely used for the commercial products, which have antimicrobial agent, medical devices, food industry and cosmetics. Despite, AgNPs have been reported as toxic to the mammalian cell, lung, liver, brain and other organs and many researchers have investigated the toxicity of AgNPs. In this study, we investigated toxicity of the AgNPs to the liver cell using metabolomics based on HRMAS NMR (High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) technics, which could apply to the intact tissues or cells, to avoid the sample destruction. Target profiling and multivariative statistical analysis were performed to analyze the 1D $^1H$ spectrum. The results show that the concentrations of many metabolites were affected by the AgNPs in the liver cell. The concentrations of glutathione (GSH), lactate, taurine, and glycine were decreased and most of amino acids, choline analogues, and pyruvate were increased by the AgNPs. Moreover, the levels of the metabolites were recovered upto similar level of metabolites in the normal cell by the pre-treatment of NAC, external antioxidant. The results suggest that the depletion of the GSH by the AgNPs might induce the conversion of lactate and taurine to the pyruvate.
