History of Indeterminate Equations (불정방정식의 역사)

  • Although indeterminate equations were dealt in Jiu zhang suan shu and then in Sun zi suan fing and Zhang Giu Jian suan Jing in China, they did not get any substantial development until Qin Jiu Shao introduced da yan shu in his great book Shu shu jiu zhang which solves goneral systems of linear congruences. We first investigate his da yan shu and then study the history of indeterminate equations in Chosun Dynasty. Further, we compare Qin's da yan shu with that in San Hak Jung Eui written by Chosun mathematician Nam Byung Gil.

AN ANALYSIS OF RECENT RESEARCH ON THE METHOD OF EXCESS AND DEFICIT (Ying NÜ and Ying Buzu Shu) (영뉵(盈朒)과 영부족술(盈不足術)에 관한 최근 동서양의 연구 분석)

  • In this paper, we deal with recent researches on Ying N$\ddot{u}$ and Ying Buzu(盈不足) which were addressed in the book Jiu Zhang Suan Shu(九章算術, The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art). Ying N$\ddot{u}$(Ying Buzu) is a concept on profit and loss problems. Ying Buzu Shu(盈不足術, the method of excess and deficit) represents an algorithm which has been used for solving many mathematical problems. It is known as a rule of double false position in the West. We show the importance of Ying Buzu Shu via an analysis of some problems in 'Ying Buzu' chapter. In 1202, Fibonacci(c.1170-c.1250) used Ying Buzu Shu in his book. This shows some of Asian mathematics were introduced to the West even before the year 1200. We present the origin of Ying Buzu Shu, and its relationship with Cramer's Rule. We have discovered how Asia's Ying Buzu Shu spread to Europe via Arab countries. In addition, we analyze some characters of Ying N$\ddot{u}$(Ying Buzu) in the book Suan Xue Bao Jian(算學寶鑑).

KaiFangShu in SanHak JeongEui

  • This paper is a sequel to the paper [8], where we discussed the connection between ShiShou KaiFangFa originated from JiuZhang SuanShu and ZengCheng KaiFangFa. Investigating KaiFangShu in a Chosun mathemtics book, SanHak JeongEui and ShuLi JingYun, we show that its authors, Nam ByungGil and Lee SangHyuk clearly understood the connection and gave examples to show that the KaiFangShu in the latter is not exact. We also show that Chosun mathematicians were very much selective when they brought in Chinese mathematics.

Inhibitory Effect of Saingheylyunbooem on Compound 48/80 Stimulated Allergic Reaction (Compound 48/80로 유발된 Allergy에 대한 생혈윤부음(生血潤膚飮)의 효과)

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the anti-allergic activity of Saingheylyunbooem(SHU)). We investigated the anti-allergic effects of SHU in RBL-2H3 basophilic leukemia cells by compound 48/80, a mast cell degranulator in mice. SHU inhibited ${\beta}$-hexosaminidase and histamine release from compound 48/80 stimulated RBL-2H3 cells. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activities of SHU in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells were investigated. SHU inhibited NO production effectively dowregulated the expression of iNOS mRNA and iNOS protein expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. These result provide evidences that SHU may be beneficial in the treatment of allergic inflammtory disease.

The System of Contents and the Meaning of confucius' philosophy in 「Yu Shu;虞書」 of 『The Book of Documents; 書經』 (『서경(書經)』 「우서(虞書)」의 내용체계와 유학사상적 의미)

  • The purpose of this study is to search for the main content system and Confucian meaning of "Yu Shu;虞書" of "The Book of Documents; 書經". This research covers two things: first, the form of The Book of Documents and the main content system of "Yu Shu". The Book of Documents consists of 4 main dynasties' Shu in ancient chinese history; "Yu Shu" 5 chapters, "Xia Shu; 夏書" 4 chapters, "Shang Shu; 商書" 17 chapters, and "Zhou Shu; 周書" 32 chapters, for a total 58 chapters. This book is organized in the form of six formalities(六體) or ten examples(十例). Second, the Confucian value of The Book of Documents and philosophical meaning of Yu Shu. Yu Shu shows a benign rule(仁政), confucianism ideal politic, as an historic example of a benevolent administration. By this research, we recognize that the tradition of abdication in the confucian society and the way of selecting people are theoretical foundation of politics based on people, rule by virtue and, by extension, a dynastic revolution. In addition, governing a country and rule the world that is treated in Yu Shu are a theory of leadership and moral training as a background of "Da Xue"(大學; Great Learning). Furthermore, Xiao(孝;filial piety) emphasized on this book is the main virtue of leaders and core value of practical action among the human relation. by extension, we recognize that the "Yu Shu" is the origin of "Xiao Jing; 孝經".

Gou Gu Shu in the 19th century Chosun (19세기(世紀) 조선(朝鮮)의 구고술(句股術))

  • As a sequel to the previous paper Gou Gu Shu in the 18th century Chosun, we study the development of Chosun mathematics by investigating that of Gou Gu Shu in the 19th century. We investigate Gou Gu Shu obtained by Hong Gil Ju, Nam Byung Gil, Lee Sang Hyuk and Cho Hee Soon among others and find some characters of the 19th century Gou Gu Shu in Chosun.

A Study on the Yin-Yang Needling Method in the Shouyaogangrou chapter of the Lingshu (『영추(靈樞)·수요강유(壽夭剛柔)』의 음양(陰陽) 자법(刺法)에 대한 고찰(考察))

  • Objectives : This paper studied the different disease sites according to Yin and Yang deviation and the principal to applying the Five Shu Points acupuncture method to these sites of the Yin-Yang needling method as explained in the Shouyaogangrou chapter of the Lingshu. Methods : Of the seasonal needling method in the Neijing, the principle to managing the Five Shu Points and indications of each point were examined. Next, clinical applications of the Five Shu Points were analyzed. Descriptions of clinical expression were collected and examined to understand the underlying pattern. Results : If we connect the disease sites of the Yin-Yang needling method to the Five Shu Points needling method according to the seasonal changes, the Yang of Yin connects to Spring, Yin of Yang to Summer, Yang of Yang to Autumn, and Yin of Yin to Winter. Of the needling site, the collateral vessel is the collateral vessel of Spring, 'Meridian of Yin' is the meridian of the Yin domain or the meridian points of the Yin meridian. 'He of Yang' is the He point of the Yang meridian, and the Yin Xing and Shu are the Xing and Shu points of the Yin meridian. Upon examining cases in the Neijing where the Five Shu Points were applied, it could be found that the Xing and Shu points of the Yin meridian were used together, while the He point of the Yang meridian was used to eliminate Yang pathogen or to stimulate Yang qi, which matches the Yin-Yang needling method of the Shouyaogangrou chapter of the Lingshu. Conclusions : The Yin and Yang of the needling sites from the Yin-Yang needling method in the Shouyaogangrou chapter of the Lingshu refers to the Yin and Yang meridians, or the Yin and Yang domains. In the context of disease site description, the former Yin and Yang describes a spatial aspect, while the latter Yin and Yang refers to the vicissitudes of qi according to temporal change.

Study on the Treatment Mechanism of Back-Shu Points for Organ Dysfunction (배수혈의 내장기 치료 기전에 관한 연구)

  • Objectives : This study aims to overview the therapeutic mechanism of back-shu points in terms of sympathetic visceral motor nervous system. Methods : Studies about autonomic nervous system, and studies and ancient texts about back-shu points were reviewed. We interpreted possible mechanism of back-shu points considering similarities of anatomical and physiological characteristics of back-shu points and visceral motor nervous system. Results : Afferent signals for organ lesions that can develop the symptoms of autonomic neurological symptoms, pain, hyperalgesia through the skin segment. Through a physical examination of the myotome and dermatome, it is possible to diagnose segmental disorders. Treatment stimulation of the thick fibers of the disorder segment skin can reduce abnormal autonomic influence over the sympathetic reflex mechanism. In addition, if spinal muscles are relaxed, the pressure on the nerve roots could be reduced and consequently the hyperactivity of the sympathetic visceral motor signal would be suppressed. Conclusions : The back-shu points treatments work through the mechanism of the sympathetic nervous reflex. Moreover, segmental acupuncture can reduce tension of the spinal muscles, thereby improving pathological conditions of the sympathetic nervous system.

A Study on the Correlation between Parasympathetic Nerve System and Back-shu Points (부교감신경계의 분포와 배유혈(背兪穴)의 상관성 연구)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is a study on the correlation between parasympathetic nerve system and Back-shu points. Methods : We have studied about the correlation between anatomical distribution of parasympathetic nerve system and that of Back-shu points. Back-shu points are located on the back area as the acupoints of Bladder Meridian(BL), doing its own organic physical and pathological working and directly connected with its own organ. Results and Conclusions : 1. It is suggested that Back-shu points has correlation with parasympathetic nerve system could be Pangguanshu(BL28), Zhonglushu(BL29), Baihuanshu(BL30), Ciliao(BL32), Zhongliao(BL33), Xialiao(BL34), Shangliao(BL31), Xiaochangshu(BL27), Baohuang,(BL53) Zhibian(BL54) etc. 2. We proved acupuncture treatment on the nearby spinal area could be one of the method that could stimulate parasympathetic nerve system. 3. The symptom of parasympathetic nerve system's disorder is similar to Back-shu points' chief efficacy a lot. And we proved the Back-shu points which has relation with parasympathetic nerve system as distribution of nerve system are only located at sacral area.

The Two Forms of Confucian Golden Rule and Their Ethical Meanings (서(恕)의 두 형태와 그 윤리학적 의미 - 주자(朱子)와 대진(戴震)의 윤리학에서 서(恕)의 위상 -)

  • This Thesis analyzes the two forms of Confucian Golden Rule(Shu恕) that were proposed by Zhu Xi朱熹 and Dai Zhen戴震 each other, and researches their ethical significances. Zhu Xi don't regards Shu as universal ethics by itself, while Dai Zhen identify Shu as the ground of universal ethics, According to this thesis, Zhu Xi thought that Shu has a danger of immoral misusage in some situation because Shu is so simplistic form of identification. Because this, Zhu Xi, for the purpose of blocking arbitrary misusage of Shu and holding universality of ethics, suggests that moral sincerity(Zhong忠) of subject is necessary to practice of Shu. Dai Zhen, however, criticizes Zhu Xi's Ethical Structure. In Dai Zhen's view, Zhu xi's idea that the subject has to establish his own morality through Zhong before practice Shu cannot make him escape from subjectivity necessarily. In this point, Dai Zhen revive Shu. His Shu concept means the reciprocity of human desires to each other. But Dai Zhen's idea, as Zhu Xi worried, has a danger of immoral misusage in some situation. On this problem, this thesis elucidates that Dai Zhen' desire concept is not individual various desires but is common basic desires of existence, thereby attests that Dai Zhen's Shu is safe from immoral misusage. This thesis claim that even if Zhu Xi's and Dai Zhen's position is so different, the ethical aims of two scholars is same. They both attempted to overcome the evil of subjectivism and to procure universality of ethics, furthermore to accomplish social fairness. Consequently, this thesis claims that two scholars both walked in same way because both wanted to establish the universality of Shu and to pursue realization of social fairness.
