  • In order to realize miniaturized and low-impedance MMIC passive component, a novel microstripline structure employing periodically perforated ground metal was proposed. The novel microstripline structure showed much lower impedance, and shorter guided-wavelength than conventional one. Using the novel microstripline with periodically perforated ground metal, a miniaturized 15 $\Omega$ ratrace was fabricated. The line width of the ratrace was 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and the size of it was 0.375 mm$^2$, which is 9.3 % of conventional one. The ratrace exhibited good RF performances from 20 to 30 GHz.

  • The ratio of aniline dimer (p-aminodiphenylamine), which is a nucleation site of chain growth in a chemical polymerization of aniline monomer, to aniline monomer was controlled to synthesize polyaniline with the molecular weight ($M_w$) between 10000 and 20000 g/mol. The result of OCP measurement showed that the reaction rate of polymerization was increased as the mole ratio of dimer was increased. The increase in the molar ratio of dimer resulted in the shift of absorption wavelength of polyaniline to the short wavelength region on measurement of UV/Vis and the decrease of molecular weight on the measurement of GPC.

  • We present IUE observations in far ultraviolet region for SS Lac in open cluster NGC 7209. The IUE short wavelength spectrum and long wavelength spectrum were merged to produce an energy distribution curve between $1200{AA}$ and $3200{AA}$. The curve has been unreddened to take out reddening effect. Then the surface temperature, gravity and abundance of SS Lac were determined based on the Kurucz model atmosphere. The photographic light curve produced before cessation of eclipse were analyzed for photometric solutions. We confirmed SS Lac is a member of open cluster NGC 7209 based on its possible distance. The main reason for the cessation of eclipse is the change of the system's orbital inclination rather than collisional merge of two stars.

  • Transparent CdS films with low electrical restivity on glass substrates were prepared by coating a CdS slurry which contained 10 wt.% $CdCl_2$, and sintering in a nitrogen atmosphere at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2hr. All-polycrystalline CdS/CdTe solar cells were fabricated by coating CdTe slurries, which contained 1.0 or 4.5 wt.% $CdCl_2$, on the sintered CdS films and sintering at $700^{\circ}C$ for various periods of sintering. The spectral responses of the sintered CdS/CdTe solar cells were measured and compared with theoretically calculated quantum efficiency. The spectral responses of the sintered CdS/CdTe solar cells in the short-wavelength region decreases with-increasing sintering time. The poor response in this region is attributed to the existence of the Cd-S-Te solid solution in the compositional junction. The decrease in the maximum response in the long-wavelength region as the sintering exceeds certain time appears to be caused by the increase in the depth of the buried homo junction and by the increase in the series resistance. The $CdCl_2$ in the CdTe layer during sintering enchances the interdiffusion of S, Te or donor impurities across the metallurgical Junction causing the formation of deeper n-p junction in the CdTe layer.

  • Clinically applicable light emitting diode (LED) has been widely investigated because of relatively low heat generation, low cytotoxicity, and non-invasiveness compared to other therapeutic methods. Therefore, we investigated the therapeutic effects of several wavelengths of light emitting diode against human cervical cancer cells and analyzed the individual inhibitory effect for the cancer cell proliferation. In the experiment, prepared HeLa cells were exposed by red, green and blue light-emitting diode for 10 minutes each. Relatively short-wavelength light-emitting diode (blue) showed stronger therapeutic effects than relatively long-wavelength light-emitting diodes.

  • We implemented DPU(Double-Pass Gain-Clamped) L-band EDFA for highly efficient amplification. A lasing signal generated within the linear cavity, can minimize the fluctuation of surviving channels when several WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) channels are added or dropped. The new method measuring the characteristics of transient response of surviving channels quantitatively is suggested. It is to measure the ratio of lasing output before add or drop to that after add or drop. We investigated dynamic characteristics by using this method according to lasing wavelengths and propagation directions within the cavity. Experimental measurements show that the short lasing wavelength and backward propagation direction is the best condition for small fluctuation of surviving channels.

  • In order to enhance the rejection performance of the UWB bandpass filter based on the Composite Right- and Left-Handed Transmission-line(CRLH-TL) Metamaterial cell, we propose the lowpass filtering concept that fits into the design objectives : Keeping metamaterial property and miniaturization. So the bandpass filter itself is made far less than a quarter-wavelength and a pair of symmetric comprises lowpass filtering blocks are placed before and after the center CRLH filter which comprises tile interdigitated coupled lines and short-circuited stob. The design result will show the size of 'guided wavelength/8', the fractional bandwidth over 100%, the insertion loss much less than 1 dB, a flat Group-Delay and a good return loss performance, as expected.

  • As the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently introduced the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships building and the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for ship operation, thus an accurate estimation of added resistance of ships advancing in waves has become necessary. In the present study, OpenFOAM, computational fluid dynamics libraries of which source codes are opened to the public, was used to calculate the added resistance and motions of the KCS. Unstructured grid using a hanging-node and cut-cell method was used to generate dense grid around a wave and KCS. A dynamic deformation mesh method was used to consider the motions of the KCS. Five wavelengths from a short wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=0.65$) to a long wavelength (${\lambda}/LPP=1.95$) were considered. The added resistance and the heave & pitch motions calculated for various waves were compared with the results of model experiments.

  • Calcium aluminate glasses transmit light at relatively long wavelengths up to 6 ㎛ and exhibit also low Rayleigh scattering values. However they have a tendency to get devitrified easily, which limits their use as routine optical materials. Here, the ternary system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses with low-silica (<30 mol%) were prepared to prevent the devitrification of CaO-Al2O3 glasses and the properties were investigated as functions of composition. The addition of SiO2 to calcium aluminate glasses promoted their stability, which was due to the decrease of non-bridging oxygens and the reconnection of network. As SiO2 was added, density, refractive index, molar volume of oxygens and thermal expansion coefficient decreased continuously. But the glass transition temperatures with increasing SiO2 contents were raised and then lowered. It was postulated that the anomaly was related to the changes of the middle range order as well as the short range order. As the amount of SiO2 in the glass was increased, the IR cut-off values moved to shorter wavelength owing to 'Si-O' antisymetric stretching vibration. The IR cut-off wavelength of the glasses with 5 and 30 mol% SiO2 was 4.90, 4.55 ㎛, respectively.
