  • The hydrodynamic stability equations for natural convection flows adjacent to a vertical isothermal surface in cold or warm water (Boussinesq or non-Boussinesq situation for density relation), constitute a two-point-boundary-value (eigenvalue) problem, which was solved numerically using the simple shooting and the orthogonal collocation method. This is the first instance in which these stability equations have been solved using a computer code COLSYS, that is based on the orthogonal collocation method, designed to solve accurately two-point-boundary-value problem. Use of the orthogonal collocation method significantly reduces the error propagation which occurs in solving the initial value problem and avoids the inaccuracy of superposition of asymptotic solutions using the conventional technique of simple shooting.

  • The soil sample obtained from shooting area contaminated with Pb, Cu, and Zn was investigated to determine the chemical forms of heavy metals with Tessier’s sequential extraction method, which is constituted of five fractions such as ‘exchangeable’, ‘bound to carbonate’, ‘bound to oxide’, ‘bound to organic matter’, and residual fractions. The amount of organic matter was measured by loss on ignition (LOI) and then the results of ‘bound to organic matter’ and LOI were compared. The sequential extraction results show that 4.7%-45% of Pb, 6.2%-25.9% of Cu and 3.9%-15.3% of Zn belong to the ‘bound to organic matter’ fraction, but LOI result shows that only 1.0%-2.8% of organic matter exists in the soil sample. In heavy medium separation tests, because Pb and Cu extracted in ‘bound to organic matter’ and residual fractions were removed, the heavy metals in the fractions would exist as heavier forms. These results suggest that the part of heavy metal extracted in ‘bound to organic matter’ fraction would result from the oxidation of metallic forms by hydrogen peroxide and nitric acid used in the fraction, and, consequently, that the ‘bound to organic matter’ fraction should be investigated in detail to determine the removal method and treatment capacity when the Tessier’s sequential extraction method is used to examine heavy metal contaminants resulted from elemental metal like bullets.

  • This paper deals with the strongest beams with the solid regular polygon cross-section, whose volumes are always held constant. The differential equation of the elastic deflection curve of such beam subjected to the concentrated and trapezoidal distributed loads are derived and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and shooting method are used to integrate the differential equation and to determine the unknown initial boundary condition of the given beam. In the numerical examples, the simple beams are considered as the end constraint and also, the linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers are considered as the shape function of cross sectional depth. As the numerical results, the configurations, i.e. section ratios, of the strongest beams are determined by reading the section ratios from the numerical data related with the static behaviors, under which static maximum behaviors become to be minimum.

  • This work presents fuel-optimal altitude maintenance of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) spacecrafts experiencing non-negligible air drag and J2 perturbation. A pseudospectral (direct) method is first applied to roughly estimate an optimal fuel consumption strategy, which is employed as an initial guess to precisely determine itself. Based on the physical specifications of KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2), a Korean artificial satellite, numerical simulations show that a satellite ascends with full thrust at the early stage of the maneuver period and then descends with null thrust. While the thrust profile is presumably bang-off, it is difficult to precisely determine the switching time by using a pseudospectral method only. This is expected, since the optimal switching epoch does not coincide with one of the collocation points prescribed by the pseudospectral method, in general. As an attempt to precisely determine the switching time and the associated optimal thrust history, a shooting (indirect) method is then employed with the initial guess being obtained through the pseudospectral method. This hybrid process allows the determination of the optimal fuel consumption for LEO spacecrafts and their thrust profiles efficiently and precisely.

  • A similarity solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for the axisymmetric stagnation flow near a plane wall coated with a magnetic fluid of uniform thickness is constructed. The shape functions representing the flow in two (magnetic and normal) fluid layer are determined from a third order boundary value problem, which is solved by the Runge-Kutta method with two shooting parameters. Features of the flow including streamline pattern and interface velocity are investigated for the varying values of density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Reynolds number. The results for the interface and wall shear stress, boundary layer and displacement thickness are also presented.

  • This research presents a laboratory study about an subjective response of impulsive sound caused by leisure shooting. The sources are sampled from outdoor noise and their levels range from 40 to 75 dB at the interval of 5dB. The noise unit is based on A-weighted sound exposure level (ASEL; $L_{AE}$). To make equal ASEL of outdoor noise, finite impulse response (FIR) filter is applied to the originally sampled source to include the effect of distance attenuation. The evaluation method of the jury test adopted a Semantic Difference(SD) Method. In the result of the jury test for impulsive noise, the mean response rating expressed a linear relation and %HA(percent highly annoyed) displayed a exponential growth relation.

  • The basic purpose of the current study is to compute the numerical analysis of heat source/sink for Darcy-Forchheimer three dimensional nanofluid flow with gyrotactic microorganism by rotatable disk via porous media under the slip conditions. Due to nanoparticles, random and thermophoretic motion phenomenon occurs. The governing mathematical model is handled numerically by shooting method. Additionally, the characteristics of velocities, mass, heat, motile microorganisms and associated parameters are thoroughly analyzed via plots and tables. Different physical parameters like Forchheimer number, slip parameters like velocity, porosity parameter, Prandtl number, Brownian number, thermophoresis parameter, heat sink/source parameter, bioconvected Rayleigh number, buoyancy parameteron dimensionless velocities, temperature. Approximate values of Sherwood microorganism are analyzed.

  • Current exertion reports the numerical analysis of boundary layer slip flow of Casson Nano fluid along a permeable cylinder that is stretching in exponential manner. The modeled PDEs are changed into nonlinear ODEs through appropriate nonlinear transformations. Numerical results are attained using a renowned numerical scheme shooting method with Runge-Kutta procedure of 6th-order. Influential role of relevant parameters like Reynolds, suction, Casson fluid and slip parameters on velocity profile is investigated. The effect of influence of slip parameter γ on temperature profile is seen through graph. To ensure the authenticity of numerical procedure, outcomes of some special cases of present work are compared with published work and strong agreement is noticed.

  • This paper proposes an approach of building an expert system for designing gear drives. In terms of gear drives the relationship between expert systems and data base systems is explained and a data base system for design, failure detection, and trouble-shooting of gear drives is built on a personal computer by the data manipulation language of dBASE III. This paper proposes a method how to build a data base system and what to consider to build a data base system for gear drives and two kinds of data base systems of design and failure detection of gear drives and trouble-shooting for noise and vibration of gear drives are built. The two data base systems are very effective for the retrieval of information for the gear design, and they will be considerably helpful for the gear design.

  • Pitching machines have been around for many years for casual amusement purpose or professional athletes' training usage, and so forth. The current pitching machines are usually built on the firm ground and do not have any mobility function. In this paper, we develop a pitching machine that has both ball-shooting and mobility functions. Our developed pitching machine consists of two parts. The upper body part has a function of shooting a ball using two DC motors and the lower body part has a function of mobility like mobile robots by using two wheels governed by DC motors. All these functions are operated wirelessly by Android smartphones via bluetooth. The control of each DC motor is done by ${\epsilon}$-PID control method in which the gain tuning is simplied by using a single parameter ${\epsilon}$. Simulation and actual experiment show that our developed pitching machine has both nontrivial shooting and mobility features.
