Recently, various types of ships are facing with a challenge to adopt the high efficient and environment-friendly power generating systems. For the reduction of exhaust emissions, improvement of thermal efficiency, and lowering the noise and vibration levels, fuel cells are gaining the much more interests. This paper projects the future marine fuel cell market on the basis of considering the historical world shipbuilding and marine engine market. To do this, the number of total ship is, at first, obtained by forecasting the number of annual new shipbuilding orders and completions. Finally, fuel cell market is forecasted by obtaining the engine capacity for annual world total number of ships and engine orders.

The objective of this research is to select the most effective technique among task related techniques(motion & time study, job redesign, physical environment improvement) for improving work efficiency in shipbuilding enterprise. This study consists of several principal steps. The first step is to design critical criteria in evaluating work efficiency in ship-building enterprises. The second step is to develop sub-criteria of the critical criteria. The third step is to develop a four level AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) structure using the critical criteria, sub-criteria and techniques among task related techniques. The fourth step is to develop the pairwise comparison matrix at each level of AHP structure, which was based on survey data collected at the H heavy industry. And the last step is to select the most effective technique among task related techniques using AHP analysis. The result of AHP analysis has shown clear difference in priority among task related techniques in terms of work efficiency of the shipbuilding enterprise: The reduction of normal time is more important than the reduction of allowance time in improving of the work efficiency. Motion & time study is the most important technique for the reduction of normal time, and physical environment improvement is the most important technique for the reduction of allowance time as well.
Ship STEP(Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) which is composed of AP 215 (Ship Arrangement), AP 216(Ship Hull Form), AP 218 (Ship Structure), has been developed more than last 10 years and it is now at the stage just before IS(International Standard). It is expected that ship STEP would be used for the seamless data exchange among various CAD/CAM/CAE systems of shipbuilding process. In this paper the huge and complicated data structure of ship STEP is briefly reviewed at the level of ARM(Application Reference Model) and some abstract test cases which will be included as part of the standards are introduced. Basically ship STEP has common data model to be used without losing compatibility among those three different ship AP's, and it is defined as the modeling framework. Typical cases of data exchange during shipbuilding process, such as hull form data exchange between design office and model basin, midship structure data between shipbuilding yard and classification society are reviewed and STEP physical data are generated using commercial geometric modeling kernel. Test cases of ship arrangement at initial design stage and hydrodynamic data of crude oil carrier are also included.

In the shipbuilding and marine industry, digital transformation activities are promoted primarily by large shipyards. However, bottlenecks are observed across value chains, and digital transformation effects are reducing because of the cost and technical challenges encountered by supplies. In this study, we proposed a win-win cooperation model for large, small, and medium-sized companies using digital transformation based on the characteristics of the shipbuilding and marine industry through case studies. We investigated the digital transformation progress in German and Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In addition, we identified information-sharing methods and management challenges encountered in enterprise resource planning and manufacturing execution systems in the collaboration process of pipes, panels, blocks, etc. of SMEs that are suppliers of a Korean shipyard, and clarified communication by building a platform based on a common format between shipyards and suppliers. Further, we proposed a standard model of a digital transformation system for enhancing the collaboration between large companies and suppliers and proposed a basic plan including strategies to efficiently and effectively build a digital transformation system based on the standard model.

In shipbuilding and offshore plant construction, pipe-stools of various types are installed. Moreover, these are many quantities but they must be installed in a successive manner. Due to these characteristics the pipe-stool installation processes easily tends to cause the schedule delays in the overall production processes. In order to reduce delay, the goal of this study is to predicts production’s lead time before manufacturing. Through this predictions it’s expected to reduce total production’s lead time by improving it's process. First of all, we made MLR(Multiple Linear Regression) and PLSR(Partial Least Square Regression) model to predict pipe-spool's lead time and then compared predictability of MLR and PLSR model. If a explanatory variable is added, it will be possible to predict results precisely.

Diverse stakeholders engaged in design, construction, and operation and maintenance of offshore plants typically operate heterogeneous plant 3D CAD systems. Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies are required to submit plant design result to the owner in the form of a plant 3D CAD model, as specified in the contract. However, because of the limitations of data interface of plant 3D CAD systems, EPC companies frequently perform manual remodeling to fulfill the terms and conditions of the contract. Therefore, comparison should be performed between the source plant 3D CAD model and the remodeled plant 3D CAD model to prove the validity of the remodeled plant 3D CAD model. To automate the comparison process, we have developed a system for quantitatively assessing the similarity of the plant 3D CAD models. This paper presents the architecture and detailed functions of the system. In addition, experimental results using this system are explained.

The weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides is first performed at the bidding stage of projects. At this time, it is difficult to estimate and calculate accurately the weight because most of items of FPSO are not apparently defined. Especially, in the case of the pipe rack module, its portion of the total weight and the range of weight variation are large due to special features of piping and electric equipment in the module. Thus, it is very important to estimate and calculate accurately its weight in the task of the weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides. In this study, the past data for the weight of the pipe rack module were collected and analyzed, the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) for the pipe rack module was constructed, and primary variables and secondary variables for developing a weight estimation and calculation model were selected. That is, after analyzing the past data, the volume was selected as the primary variable and the regression analysis was performed based on the variable. Then, several secondary variables were selected and incorporated into a weight estimation and calculation model. At this time, the weight per discipline was assumed from ratios of the total weight. Finally, the weight of the pipe rack module was estimated and calculated by using the developed model. As a result, the deviation from the model was better than that (-20 % ~ 60 %) of other studies about the weight estimation and calculation of FPSO topsides. Thus, the validity and applicability of the weight estimation and calculation of the pipe rack could be checked.
This study has focused on aerodynamics for a wind-resistance design about the single and tandem box girder sections to realize a super-long span bridge in the near future. Three-dimensional static analysis of flows around the fundamental single and tandem box girder sections with fairing is carried out by means of the IBTD/FS finite element technique with LES turbulence model. As the results of the analysis, computations have verified aerodynamic characteristics of both sections by the histories of aerodynamic forces, the separation and reattachment flow patterns and the surface pressure distributions. The relationship between the section shapes and the aerodynamic characteristics is also investigated in both sections. And the mechanism about the generation of fluctuating aerodynamic forces is discussed.

The study aimed to analyze the status quo of manufacturing work environment and the work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility of welding and grinding work processes in the machine and shipbuilding industries in South Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the study, which consisted of questions about work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility according to body parts. The findings derived from the research were: the high impact levels of work environment factors on welding and grinding work processes were noise, metal fragment, superheat, toxic gas, UV ray factors. Subject workers' assessment of work clothes' clothing pressures were in the levels between 3 (i.e. moderate) and 4 (i.e. comfortable) in a range of 5-point scale. The impact levels of wearer mobility factor were high on the work processes of welding and grinding in machine and grinding in shipbuilding. While welding process in shipbuilding showed a 'moderate' wearer mobility level and this was because its work postures were uncomfortable yet the rate of the motion change was low. The consideration to develop the work clothes specialized for certain work processes should include the materials' protecting performance from the hazardous work environment factors; and work clothes' designs that provides workers with maximized clothing comfort and wearer mobility for bending or tilting postures of upper, lower and lateral body parts defined in the study.
This paper considers a transporter scheduling problem under dynamic block transportation environment in shipbuilding. In dynamic situations, there exist the addition, cancellation or change of block transportation requirements, sudden breakdowns and maintenance of transporters. The transportation of the blocks in the shipyard has some distinct characteristics. Some blocks are available to be picked up at a specific time during the planning horizon while some other blocks need to be delivered before a specific time. These requirements cause two penalty times: 1) delay times incurred when a block is picked up after a required start time, and 2) tardy times incurred when a block shipment is completed after the required delivery time. The blocks are located at different areas in the shipyard and transported by transporters. The objective of this paper is to propose a heuristic algorithm based on a network flow model which minimize the weighted sum of empty transporter travel times, delay times, and tardy times. Also, a rolling-horizon scheduling method is proposed for dynamic block transportation environment. The performance of the proposed heuristic algorithms are evaluated through a simulation experiment.
