  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the impacts of technological innovation and cost management on productivity in small shipping industries to come up with developmental implications. To achieve this, a survey was carried out to 150 workers in small shipbuilding industries through April 2 to April 20, 2012. As for findings stated above, technological innovation and cost management in the Korean small shipbuilding industries were key factors that elevate financial and non-financial productivity. In the light of low technological prowess and cost structure of small shipbuilding industries, their productivity can be improved when intensive cost management with production factor technology as know-how is realized through quality management, which product development technology is the top priority as an independent niche strategy. Consequently, the combination of infrastructures in small shipbuilding industries with continuous efforts for cost reduction by the link to the systematized structure can't only secure their independent competitiveness, but raise their productivity.

  • The objective of this research is to select the most effective technique from AMT (Advanced Manufacturing Technologies) and IMP (Innovative Management Practices) for improving manufacturing performance in shipbuilding enterprises. The research consists of several principal steps. The first step is to design critical criteria in evaluating manufacturing performance in shipbuilding enterprises. The second step is to develop sub-criteria of the critical criteria. The third step is to develop a four level AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) structure using the critical criteria, sub-criteria and techniques from AMT and IMP. The fourth step is to develope the pairwise comparison matrix by each level of AHP structure, which was based on survey data collected at the H heavy industry. And the last step is to select the most effective technique from AMT and IMP by using AHP analysis. The results of AHP analysis did not show clear difference in priority between techniques of AMT and IMP in terms of manufacturing performance of the shipbuilding enterprise. Thus, each critical criterion was assigned modified weights and examined the priority change of techniques by conducting performance sensitivity analysis.

  • With the advent of the digital economy, the business eco-system has been changing from the competition system across individual companies to that of supply chains. Under the rapidly changing business environment, it becomes true that the competitive power of the steel maker depends on the shipbuilding company, an important customer of the steel maker. Accordingly, e-partnering between a steel maker and shipbuilding companies becomes important. Schemes of developing e-partnering are presented as follows: implementation of the inter-communication system, day/sequence order and supply, improvement of infrastructure such as transport, quay etc.

  • Korea's shipbuilding industry is in a critical condition due to changes in the domestic and international environment. To overcome this crisis, preemptive development of products and technologies through prediction of new demand for ships is necessary. The goal of this research is to develop an artificial intelligence algorithm based on ship big data in order to predict new demand for ships. We intend to develop a big data analytics platform specialized in predicting ship demand and to utilize the forecast results of new ship demand through data analysis for planning/development of new products. By doing so, the development of sustainable new business models for equipment and equipment manufacturers will create new growth engines for shipyard and shipbuilders. Furthermore, it is expected that shipbuilders will be able to create business cases based on measurable performance, plan market-oriented products and services, and continuously achieve innovation that has high market destructive power.

  • This paper describes a case study on an enterprise ontology(30) based analysis and representation of the production operation in shipbuilding. The production operation consists of steel fabrication, assembly, election, launching, sea trial and delivery process. We represent and analyze the steel fabrication process and the piping design business of the assembly process among them. First, we build an ontology on concepts of steel fabrication process and the piping design business of assembly process. And then we merge it with the original EO. We represent each process and analyze current state of production process with the merged EO and $Prot{\acute{e}}g{\acute{e}}$ plug-ins. Moreover, we can analyze dependency relations among the workflow elements. Through the case study, we have found the effectiveness of EO in business management and process management in complex heavy industries.

  • This study inquired the features of restructuring of shipbuilding industry and structure of community cooperation. The Sinhyeon-eup region has experienced rapid changes as a large shipyard location. Prior to Korea, Japan has developed the cooperation of company-community-residents relationships and the reorganization of location systems through division and accumulation system. The restructuring of shipbuilding industry in Korea have focused on the improvement of business environment. So they have not been efficiently settled in the accumulation and the cooperation structure between company and region. Japan established the organic cooperation structure of company and community before the large restructuring, while the shipbuilding industry city of our country commenced it with the crisis of community by the restructuring. In the Sinhyeon-eup region, The connecting ring among the production sections of a core company in center is established. However the structure of community cooperation is weak. The structure of community cooperation as local governance consist of company, pubic institution, local residents, and regional expert. This structure can be a rational channel in which it can not only strengthen the cohesion of the community, but also solve the present questions of the industrial city.

  • This study is to investigate the causal relationship between exchange hedge and the net income of the shipbuilder through the unit root test and co-integration and vector autoregressive model(Vector Autoregressive Model: VAR). First, quarter net income of shipbuilders to order a unit root tests from 2000 to 2013 was used as a value after the Johnson transformation. In the same period, the return on bond futures(KTBF), three years bond yield(KTB3Y), America-Korea exchange differences are weekly data for each quarterly difference in value was converted by utilization, shipbuilding shares after log transformation which it was used. Also, structural change point investigation analysis to verify that looked to take advantage of the structural changes occur in the exchange hedge strategies affecting net income in the shipbuilding industry. Between the exchange hedge and net income of shipbuilders in structural change points detection and analysis showed that structural changes occur starting in 2004. In other words, strategy of shipbuilders about exchange hedge has occurred from "passive exchange hedge" to "active exchange hedge". The exchange hedge of the Korea shipbuilders through the estimation of the VAR was able to grasp that affect the profitability of mutual shipbuilders. Macroeconomic variables and stock prices could also check to see that affected the net income of the shipbuilding industry.

  • The purpose of the study was to analyze the work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility of painting workers with the consideration of the work environment features in the machine and shipbuilding industries in South Korea. A questionnaire survey was conducted for the study, which consisted of questions on the clothing comfort and wearer mobility aspects of painting work clothes by clothes types and body parts. The work clothes' clothing comfort and wearer mobility levels were scaled in 5 points i.e. 1(: very tight/very uncomfortable) to 5(: very slack/very comfortable). The painting work environmental hazardous features were considered as high impact levels of workplace temperature, oxygen deficiency, organic solvent, toxic gas factors while metal fragment factor only impacts 'low' in the painting processes with the findings throughout this study. Since the painting work consisted of surface washing and the spray and touch-up painting processes, which was carried out in an outdoor work place, the painting work clothes should meet high performance of waterproofing from the painting material and air permeability specially in summer as well as thermal performance in winter. The subjects painting workers' assessment of the existing work clothes' clothing oppression was in the levels between 3 (i.e. moderate) and 4 (i.e. comfortable) in a range of 1 to 5 points. The existing painting work clothes' wearer mobility was evaluated 'very uncomfortable' in all work clothes parts, especially, armhole length, biacromial breadth, sleeve length of the jumper; and body rise, waist, hip, thigh and knee circumferences of the pants.
