  • In this study, we propose a piping material supply management method using CAD system. The piping materials installed in super large offshore plants have very complicated connection conditions. Therefore, it is very difficult to determine the order of receipt of a large number of installation materials. Therefore, we have developed a system that can automatically check the preparation rate of installation materials prior to the installation process. We have developed an algorithm to obtain connection information among installation items from PDMS system. We have developed an algorithm that can determine the order of installation materials to be installed using the connection information. The order of the installation material is determined by taking into account the constraint conditions for the complete installation of the piping material. We confirm the effectiveness of the developed algorithms in the operating system. This system is also used to manage installation schedules and plan the installation manpower.

  • With increasing automation in ships and the development of autonomous ships, an IPMS (Integrated Platform Management System) in ship needs to integrate and process large amounts of real-time data from various equipment operating on different operating systems. A ship IPMS simulator based on data distribution service (DDS) was developed and its performance was evaluated to handle data processing similar in real ship environment. Errors were monitored while 1,000 topics/sec were asynchronously published and subscribed from data acquisitive units (DAUs) and an IPMS server operating on different operating systems. Except for the loss of some topics during the initial 4 seconds, topics were received without an error thereafter. The developed simulator demonstrates the feasibility of using DDS to integrate various control systems using different operating systems in actual ships.

  • There is scant of research regarding the efficiency measurement of the ship management business. This paper aims to analyze the relative efficiency within the Korean Major Ship management corporations, to select the relatively low effective companies, and to suggest the improvement strategies for those. As a research methodology, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) applied to the top 20 corporations among Korean and Foreign Shipping Liners in Korea. To draw out the efficiency of targeted terminals, the number of ship managed is used as an input variables while, the number of crews and the total sales are utilized as an output variables. As a result. Haeyoung Maritime services is the most efficient corporations in Foreign Shipping Liners. Among Korean Shipping Liners, Panstar Shipping, Korea Lines, STX marine and Woolim Shipping are relatively efficient corporations which are scored BCC 1.

  • Marine casualties of vessel are serious problems on social and national aspects, because it results in sacrifice of lives, a great lose of properties and marine pollution. According to recent statistics of marine casualties of vessel, fishing boats are more likely to be ended in the casualty, and especially, small fishing boats cause much more accidents than any other big vessels. Most of marine casualties were caused by the human factors such as poor watch keeping, inadequate manoeuvering and negligent action for engine, etc. This study is intended to provide navigator of small fishing boat with a specific information of necessary to assist both the manoeuvering and the avoidance of capsizing. The manoeuvering characteristics of ship can be adequately judged by the results of typical ship trials manoeuvres. For this purpose, the author measured the roll responses of a small fishing boat in waves using the real sea experimental measuring system, and analyzed the experimental data by the statistical and spectral analyzing methods to get the characteristics of the roll motion responses of the small boat through the wave directions and the ship's speed.

  • The economical property of a shipping enterprise, as well as other transportation industries, is determined by the difference between the freight earned and expense paid. This study can be regarded as a division of optimizing ship allocation to routes under the integrated port transport system. Fleet planning and scheduling require complicated allocations of cargoes to ships and ships to routes in order to optimize the given criterion function for a given forecast period. This paper deals with the optimum ship allocation problem minimizing the operating cost of ships in a shipping company. Optimum fleet operating for a shipping enterprise is very important, since the marine transportation is a form of large quantity transport requiring long-term period, and there is a strong possibility to bring about large amount of loss in operation resulting from a faulty ship allocation. Where there are more than one loading and discharging ports, and a variety of ship's ability in speed, capacity, operating cost etc., and when the amount of commodities to be transported between the ports has been determined, then the ship's schedule minimizing the operating cost while satisfying the transport demand within the predetermined period will be made up. First of all a formula of ship allocation problems will be established and then will be constructed to solve an example by the Integer Programming application after consideration of the ship's ability, supply and demand of commodity, amount of commodity to be transported, operating costs of each ship etc. This study will give good information on deciding intention for a ship oprator or owner to meet the computerization current with shiping management.

  • This study introduces a new cruise ship design model with residence concept by carrying out a specific design procedure on the regionally and culturally characterized cruise model. Cruise ship design requires a combined approach with architectural design skills, shipbuilding techniques and even the knowledge of business management. Contrary to the traditional cargo ship design in which the design of residence area on the top of cruise ship is performed first and then the lower part of the ship structure is determined as a final step, a top-down procedure for the conceptual ship design is adopted.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze informatization competencies of the international ship supply companies at Busan port. This study comprehensively suggests certain issues attributed to the successful implementation of total information management system for ship supply. To achieve this objective, evaluation was undertaken based on the model of the National Competency Standards (NCS). This model consisted of three evaluation areas, including 20 items. Analysis of information competencies of ship supply companies was undertaken using the Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) method. Survey data was collected from ship supply companies located in the ship supply center at Busan port. Results found that there were significant differences between importance and performance. In addition, overall informatization competency was very low. Thus, in order to ensure successful implementation of total information management system, re-education programs for ICT usage and dedicated support organization are necessary.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of exposure to asbestos for ship repair workers in Korea by a systematic review. The number of articles studying asbestos exposure levels from ship repair workplaces was found to be 4. All asbestos concentration reported as either geometric mean and geometric standard deviation or ranges were transformed to arithmetic mean to estimate exposure level. In addition, weighted arithmetic means(WAMs) were calculated by weighing of the different number of samples. The WAM concentrations were 2.746 f/cc during asbestos dismantling work, 0.034 f/cc before asbestos dismantling work and 0.065 f/cc after working respectively. The maximum airborne concentration of asbestos during asbestos removal work was 7.02 f/cc which was 70 times higher than the occupational exposure limit of Korea, 0.1 f/cc. This study recommends that retrospective exposure to asbestos based on various ship types and operations should be assessed.

  • As the competition among commercial shipyards gets more intense and the number of ships to be designed is increasing significantly, the state is that engineering work volume has increased proportionately. Under these conditions, various attempts have been tried to improve performance in design activities and it has come to a vital issue as to how the design process should be managed and conducted in more efficient manner. To achieve this goal, an engineering process management system has been developed, named 'DSME Engineering Wizard System'. It aims to accelerate process performance by managing execution, promoting collaboration and maximizing engineering data reusability based on workflow concept. For the application of this system, Marketing Design which is one of the major processes for commercial ship design was analyzed and established into a unique workflow template consisting of activities, getting design experiences organized into a best practice in which engineering tasks are performed in the way proven most efficient.
