In the fabrication of offshore oil and gas facilities, the significance of dimension control is growing continuously. But, it is difficult to determine the deformation of the structure during fabrication by simple lab tests due to the large size and the complicated shape. Strain-boundary method (a kind of shrinkage method) based on the shell element was proposed to predict the welding distortion of a structure effectively. Modeling of weld geometry in shell element is still a difficult task. In this paper, a concept of imaginary temperature pair is introduced to handle the effect of geometric factors such as groove shape, plate thickness and pass number, etc. Single pass imaginary temperature pair formula is derived from the relation between the groove area and the FE mesh size. By considering the contribution of each weld layer to the whole weldment, multi-pass imaginary temperature is also derived. Since the temperature difference represents the distortion increment, cumulative distortion curve can be drawn by integrating the temperature difference. This curve will be a useful solution when engineers meet some problems occurred in the shipyard. A typical example is shown about utilization of this curve. Several verifications are conducted to examine the validity of the proposed methodology. The applicability of the model is also demonstrated by applying it to the fabrication process of the heavy ship block. It is expected that the imaginary temperature model can effectively solve the modeling problem in shell element. It is also expected that the cumulative distortion curve derived from the imaginary temperature can offer useful qualitative information about angular distortion without FE analysis.

For the steel structures those are used in harsh sea environments, corrosion fatigue is a challenging issue in connection with design life. In this research, in order to investigate the influence of cathodic overprotection on the corrosion fatigue crack propagation behavior, corrosion fatigue crack propagation test under the condition of -950mV vs SCE was conducted by using of high tensile TMCP steel plate and the relationships between da/dN-${\Delta}K$ were obtained. At this test, when ${\Delta}K$ is low, the crack propagation rates were accelerated compared to those of seawater condition, however, when ${\Delta}K$ is high, the crack propagation rates were lower than those of seawater condition. As the cause for the acceleration and deceleration of corrosion fatigue crack propagation rates under the condition of cathodic overprotection, the role of hydrogen and calcareous deposits are discussed.

In ship and offshore structures, there exist many local structural systems which may be regarded as a combined structural systems composed of thick plates or double wall panels and attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. For vibration analysis of such a combined system an analytical method based on the receptance method is presented in this paper. The free vibrational characteristics and forced vibration responses of the combined system can be calculated by synthesis of receptances of the panel and attachments. To calculate receptances of the panel, it may be regarded as a Mindlin plate for consideration of effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia and the assumed mode-Lagrange's equation method is applied using Timoshenko beam function or polynomials having properties of Timoshenko beam function as trial functions. Through some numerical calculations, accuracy and efficiency of the presented method are shown.

The use of I-Core sandwich panel has increased in cruise ship deck structure since it can provide similar bending strength with conventional stiffened plate while keeping lighter weight and lower web height. However, due to its thin plate thickness, i.e. about 4~6 mm at most, it is assembled by high power $CO_2$ laser welding to minimize the welding deformation. This research proposes a volumetric heat source model for T-joint of the I-Core sandwich panel and a method to use shell element model for a thermal elasto-plastic analysis to predict welding deformation. This paper, Part I, focuses on the heat source model. A circular cone type heat source model is newly suggested in heat transfer analysis to realize similar melting zone with that observed in experiment. An additional suggestion is made to consider negative defocus, which is commonly applied in T-joint laser welding since it can provide deeper penetration than zero defocus. The proposed heat source is also verified through 3D thermal elasto-plastic analysis to compare welding deformation with experimental results. A parametric study for different welding speeds, defocus values, and welding powers is performed to investigate the effect on the melting zone and welding deformation. In Part II, focuses on the proposed method to employ shell element model to predict welding deformation in thermal elasto-plastic analysis instead of solid element model.

The centrifugal separator which uses gravity separation method for oil-water separation, rotating at high-speed, is one of the most commonly used device for controlling the amount of the oil in waste water collected in bilge. The IMO (International Maritime Organization) has set regulations, also known as MARPOL 73/78, for the prevention of marine pollution. In addition, DET NORSKE VERITAS (DNV) has set standards regarding the assignment of Environmental Class Notation, CLEAN or CLEAN DESIGN, of ships. One of the requirements for classification is that in addition to conforming to MARPOL 73/78, more stringent measures must be taken as well. One of these measures is to limit the oil concentration in bilge water to less than 5ppm. So in this study, an Oil-Water Separator (OWS) is used together with multiple separating plates as a filtration system to be used as an oil-water separation device. The OWS operates using centrifugal separation in which the mixture is separated by centrifugal forces. The main purpose of this paper is to present the OWS separation efficiency according to the rotation speed, mass-flow rate, the angle and the number of stacked layers of the laminated plate using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Improvements to the device will be investigated from these results.

Line heating is a method widely used in forming ship hull surface. From the viewpoint of mechanics it is large deformation thermal elasto-plastic problem of arbitrary shaped plate. Many researches have been carried out to resolve this problem. Especially, Jang et al.[1] proposed a simplified thermal elasto-plastic analysis method to predict effectively the deformation of plate due to line heating. In this paper, we improved the method of Jang et al.[1] by considering tension yielding in temperature decreasing stage and verified with experimental results. FEA program using MITC4 degenerated shell element was made to deal with elastic large deformation problem. The newly proposed method can be used in the simulation and control of forming hull surface for higher productivity with simplicity and efficiency.

In this paper, a numerical study is carried out for super-pipe, flat plate and axisymmetric body flows to investigate a validity of using wall function and high $y_1^+$ in calculation of high Reynolds number flow. The velocity profiles in boundary layer agree well with the law of the wall. And it is found that the range of $y^+$which validated the logarithmic law of the wall grows with increasing Reynolds number. From the result, an equation is suggested that can be used to estimate a maximum $y^+$ value of validity of the log law. And the slope(1/$\kappa$) of the log region of the numerical result is larger than that of experimental data. On the other hand, as $y_1^+$ is increasing, both the friction and the pressure resistances tend to increase finely. When using $y_1^+$ value beyond the range of log law, the surface shear stress shows a significant error and the pressure resistance increases rapidly. However, when using $y_1^+$ value in the range, the computational result is reasonable. From this study, the use of the wall function with high value of $y_1^+$ can be justified for a full scale Reynolds number ship flow.

In the present study, the model-scale Propeller Open Water (POW) tests for the propeller of 176K bulk carrier and 8600TEU container ship were conducted through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation. In order to solve the incompressible viscous flow field, the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RaNS) equations were employed as the governing equations. The γ-Reθ(gamma-Re-theta) transition model combined with the SST k-ωturbulence model was introduced to describe the laminar-turbulence transition considering the low Reynolds number of model-scale. Firstly, the flow simulation developing over a flat plate was performed to verify the transition modeling, in which the wall shear stresses were compared with experiments and other numerical results. Then, to investigate the effect of the model, the CFD simulation for the POW test was performed and the simulated propeller performance was validated through comparison with the experiment conducted at Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO).

Strategically, the Patrol Killer Medium (PKM) ought to run at high speed that produces largely vibration by propeller, in a consequence, the vibration gradually deterioratescrews' working condition and increases the possibility of SONAR detection. In this paper, we propose the propeller damper, which is one of waysto reduce the vibration induced by the propeller, and simulate the ability of the damper numerically. The propeller damper was designed to apply to an isolated plate at the bottom flat board of ship which is directly affected by the fluctuating pressure. The dynamic pressure for the stern part of the PKM is calculated by using the DnV rule and the numerical analysis when the propeller damper applied or not, is performed with ANSYS at the isolated plate that simplified. From the analysis, the damping effect of the proposed propeller damper is confirmed and the reduction ratio for each compartment is estimated based on the experimental data in the PKM.
