  • Korea has developed coastal farming industry due to the environmental characteristics that its three sides are surrounded by sea. The damage of coastal farming industry caused by Asterias Amurensis with very strong reproductive rate and predaciousness has increased sharply every year. Moreover, Asterias Amurensis preys on living fish and shellfish and so the damage of fishermen is vern greater. In this paper, a method is proposed to extract effectively the features from the image of Asterias Amurensis acquired in the water. Because the proposed method extracts convex features using 6-directional scanning, it selects a fewer number of feature candidates than the conventional one. In addition, after selecting candidate concave points using the extracted convex features and centers of region, the final concave features are extracted. Due to the features of the starfish which lives in groups, individuals of the starfish in the input image are concentrated. Thus, it is significant to minimize the number of feature candidates extracted from the input image. The experimental results indicate an improvement of the proposed feature extraction method over the conventional one as evidenced by the fact that the feature extract was 88 % of the feature candidates.

  • To understand the status of organic matter and heavy metal pollution in surface sediment of a fish farming area, we have measured the concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in surface sediments of a fish farming area near Tongyoung-Geoje coast. The mean concentrations of TOC and TN were 22.7 mg/g and 3.4 mg/g, respectively, and were much higher than those in surface sediments of a semi-enclosed bay in the southern coast of Korea. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn were 10.5 mg/kg, 0.37 mg/kg, 82.9 mg/kg, 127 mg/kg, 4.19%, 0.041 mg/kg, 596 mg/kg, 39.5 mg/kg, and 175 mg/kg, respectively, and the mean concentrations of Cd and Cu were three times higher than those in surface sediments of shellfish farming area in the southeastern coast of Korea. In addition, the concentrations of TOC and corrected Cu exceeded the values of sediment quality guidelines applied in Korea, and pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (ERI) showed that the metal concentrations in the sediments of some fish farming area have a strongly negative ecological impact on benthic organisms, although most metal concentrations did not exceed the sediment quality guidelines. Based on overall assessment results, the surface sediments of fish farming areas in the study region are polluted with organic matter and some heavy metals. Thus, a comprehensive management plan is necessary to improve the sedimentary environments, identify primary contamination sources, and reduce the input of pollution load for organic matter and heavy metals in the sediments of fish farming areas.

  • Red tide is a natural phenomenon to bloom harmful algal, which fish and shellfish die en masse. Red tide damage with respect to sea farming has been occurred each year. Red tide damage can be minimized by means of prediction of red tide blooms. Red tide prediction using naive bayes classifier can be achieve good prediction results. The result of naive bayes method only determine red tide blooms, whereas the method can not know how increasing of red tide algae density. In this paper, we proposed the red tide blooms prediction method using fuzzy reasoning and naive bayes classifier. The proposed method can enhance the precision of red tide prediction and forecast the increasing density of red tide algae.

  • The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in pathogenic bacteria of fish and shellfish have caused serious concerns in the aquaculture industry, owing to the potential health risks to humans and animals. Among these bacteria, Aeromonas salmonicida, which is one of the most important primary pathogens in salmonids, is responsible for significant economic losses in the global aquaculture industry, especially in salmonid farming because of its severe infectivity and acquisition of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, interest in the use of alternative approaches to prevent and control A. salmonicida infections has increased in recent years, and several applications of bacteriophages (phages) have provided promising results. For several decades, A. salmonicida and phages infecting this fish pathogen have been thoroughly investigated in various research areas including aquaculture. The general overview of phage usage to control bacterial diseases in aquaculture, including the general advantages of this strategy, has been clearly described in previous reviews. Therefore, this review specifically focuses on providing insights into the phages infecting A. salmonicida, from basic research to biotechnological application in aquaculture, as well as recent advances in the study of A. salmonicida.

  • The purpose of this study were to analyze the consumption patterns of animal foods during the sixteenth century through Shamirok. There were eleven animal foods : beef, pork, chicken, pheasant, deer, roe, lamb, bear, fox, sparrow, and horse. The most frequently consumed were in the order of pheasant, doe, and chicken. There were 44 fish consumed, including flatfish, hairtail, mackerel, flounder, kumlin fish, bass, null fish, codfish, and red snapper, as well as four mollusks and six shellfish. Eggs and fish egg were also consumed. These foods were cooked as Tang(湯), Gui(灸), Po(脯), Hoe(膾), and Sookyook(熟肉), or processed after being dried or salted. The animal foods were mostly consumed as Po and Tang in daily eating and for formal dishes. Fish were mostly consumed as Jockgal or Shikhae. The foods were primarily acquired by donation from local officials or relatives ; secondly by independent poultry farming, fishing, or hunting, along with the production of grain and thirdly through barter with rice and textiles. Food were sometimes traded for profit, but such acts of trading while living ; as wartime refugees was a meager means for living.

  • Starfish are a critical problem for fishermen since they eat every farming product including shellfish. The number of starfish is increasing dramatically because they have no natural enemy underwater. We consider the concept of capturing starfish using a semi-autonomous robot. A new underwater robot design to capture starfish is proposed using cooperation between humans and the robot. A requirements list for the robot is developed and two conceptual designs are proposed. Each robot is designed as a modular platform. The kinematic and dynamic performance of each robot is analyzed and compared. This study is a starting point for developing a starfish capture robot and designing underwater robots for other applications. In the near future, a prototype will be assembled and tested in a marine environment.

  • To understand the geochemical characteristics of intertidal sediment in a semi-enclosed bay, we measured various geochemical parameters, including grain size, ignition loss (IL), chemical oxygen demand (COD), acid volatile sulfide (AVS), and trace metals (Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Hg, and As), in intertidal sediment from three bays (Deukryang Bay, Yeoja Bay, and Gamak Bay) in the southern region of Jeollanam Province. The intertidal sediment in Deukryang Bay consisted of various sedimentary types, such as sand, gravelly muddy sand, mud, and silt, whereas the intertidal sediments in Yeoja and Gamak Bays were composed mainly of mud. The concentrations of IL, COD, AVS and trace metals in the intertidal sediments of the three study regions were relatively high near areas affected by input of stream waters and/or shellfish farming waste. The concentrations of organic matter and trace metals in Gamak Bay were much higher than those in Deukryang and Yeoja Bays, which appears to be due to the influence of anthropogenic pollutants, originating from the city and the industrial complex near Gamak Bay. The evaluation results of organic matter and metal pollution using the sediment quality guidelines showed that the intertidal sediments in the three study regions were not polluted in terms of organic matter and trace metals. In future, sustainable management for sources of organic matter and trace metal is necessary to conserve a healthy benthic ecosystem in intertidal sediments.

  • Organic enrichment and pollution was investigated in surface sediments from Jinhae Bay and Geoje-Hansan Bay of Korea, which contain the largest oyster farms in Korean coastal areas. Geochemical indicators (chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, ignition loss, and acid volatile sulfide) in sediments, ammonium and nitrate in pore water, and bioluminescence inhibition test for sediment extracts were analyzed. Temporal changes of organic enrichment were also investigated using sediment core samples from Geoje-Hansan Bay. The level of organic pollution in sediments from Jinhae Bay was significantly greater than that of sediments from Geoje-Hansan Bay. Compared with other sites, Jinhae Bay was one of the most polluted coastal areas of Korea. The levels of geochemical indicators in May were comparable to, or higher than, in August. Ammonium concentrations in pore water were two orders of magnitudes greater than the nitrate concentrations, suggesting that the bays are reducing environments. The concentrations of total organic carbon in core sediment samples from shellfish-farming areas increased significantly from 2000 to the present year, and it seems to be associated with increases in anthropogenic activities.

  • The farmers' nutritional condition can not be compared with other citizens according to the Korean National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey, and based on other literature reviews. These farmers have either less access to educational materials or have no idea and do not understand the importance of nutritional education. The purpose of this study is to develop an appropriate reading material on nutrition to educate the farmers. To do this, the first step was to gather sufficient available materials for the review of related literature. Second, a survey was conducted to assess the needs of farmers and extension workers for educational materials on nutrition. The results showed that the farmers preferred the following topics: Menu Planning or Menu for Health' (62.1%), Dietary Assessment (49.7%), Dietary Guideline for Farmers (35.7%), and Cooking Method and Recipe (32.6%). They also preferred the booklet type (62.7%). These materials basically contained literature review, lesson plan, and needs assessment. The booklets contained in detail: 1) Dietary assessment - nutritional assessment, and assessment of meal 2) Dietary guidelines for farmers - reduce salt intakes, eat calcium-rich foods, ideal body weight, reduce alcohol-drinking and smoking, tips on eating soybean, eat meat and fish, tips on eating fruits, eat shellfish and seaweeds, and tips on eating dietary fibers, and 3) Plan a meal - menu planning and sample menu by farming patterns. Finally, the text of the final material was improved by the graphic designer using Quark Express 3.3, Photoshop 6.0, Illustrator 10.0, and Painter 8.0. The booklet has 46 pages and divided into three chapters. This contains simple and affordable recipes and provides some helpful tips for dietary and changing lifestyles. This booklet is made available for farmers and other groups interested in nutrition education.

  • Red tide is a natural phenomenon temporary blooming harmful algal with changing sea color from normal to red, which fish and shellfish die en masse. It also give a bad influence to coastal environment and sea ecosystem. The damage of sea farming by a red tide has been occurred each year which it cost much to prevent disasters of red tide blooms. Red tide damage and prevention cost of red tide disasters can be minimized by means of prediction of red tide blooms. In this paper, we proposed the red tide blooms prediction method using ensemble train. The proposed method use the bagging and boosting ensemble train methods for enhancing red tide prediction and forecast. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a better red tide prediction performance than other single classifiers.
