  • An efficient approach to the buckling analysis of stiffened cylindrical shells with rings and stringers under the axial and the lateral pressure loadings is presented. By this approach, the local buckling as well as overall buckling behavior has been investigated considering the discreteness of stiffeners and appropriate adoption of displacement functions. Some design criteria based on structural stability to determine optimum scantlings of stiffeners are also suggested. It is shown that the optimum scantlings of stiffeners can be designed from the condition of equal local and overall buckling strength.

  • The buckling analysis is presented for non-homogeneous (NH) orthotropic truncated conical shells subjected to combined loading of axial compression and external pressure. The governing equations have been obtained for the non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shell, the material properties of which vary continuously in the thickness direction. By applying Superposition and Galerkin methods to the governing equations, the expressions for critical loads (axial, lateral, hydrostatic and combined) of non-homogeneous orthotropic truncated conical shells with simply supported boundary conditions are obtained. The results are verified by comparing the obtained values with those in the existing literature. Finally, the effects of non-homogeneity, material orthotropy, cone semi-vertex angle and other geometrical parameters on the values of the critical combined load have been studied.

  • This paper addresses the method for the shape design sensitivity analysis of the buckling load in the continuous elastic body. The sensitivity formula for critical load is analytically derived and expressed in terms of shape variation, based on the continuum formulation of the stability problem. Though the buckling problem is more efficiently solved by the structural elements such as beam and shell, the elastic solids are considered in this paper because the solid elements can be used in general for any kind of structures whether they are thick or thin. The initial stress and buckling analysis is carried out by the commercial analysis code ANSYS. The sensitivity is computed by using the mathematical package MATLAB using the results of ANSYS. Several problems including straight and curved beams under compressive load, ring under pressure load, thin-walled section and bottle shaped column are chosen to illustrate the efficiency of the presented method.

  • Thermal buckling of functionally graded sandwich cylindrical shells is presented in this study. Material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of FGM layers are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness according to a sigmoid function and simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Equilibrium and stability equations of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells with simply supported boundary conditions are derived according to the Donnell theory. The influences of cylindrical shell geometry and the gradient index on the critical buckling temperature of several kinds of FGM sandwich cylindrical shells are investigated. The thermal loads are assumed to be uniform, linear and nonlinear distribution across the thickness direction. An exact simple form of nonlinear temperature rise through its thickness taking into account the thermal conductivity and the inhomogeneity parameter is presented.

  • Using large monopod bucket foundations as an alternative to monopiles for offshore wind turbines offers the potential for large cost savings compared to typical piled foundations. In this paper, numerical simulations are carried out to assess the risk of structural buckling during installation of large-diameter bucket foundations. Since shell structures are generally sensitive to initially imperfect geometries, eigenmode-affine imperfections are introduced in a nonlinear finite-element analysis. The influence of modelling the real lid structure compared to classic boundary conditions is investigated. The effects of including soil restraint and soil-structure interaction on the buckling analysis are also addressed.

  • Notwithstanding a considerable body of references in the literature on the buckling response of conical shell structures, it seems imperative to provide further insight on the buckling response of locally imperfect steel cones. This paper contains different simulations including non-linear FE analysis and discusses the influence of dent imperfection on the buckling load of these structures subject to external pressure. Data of the present work are evaluated against available experimental results, codes and recommendations and the effect of the local damages is exhaustively set forth. It is also found that the employed FE program can reliably predict the structural response of locally damaged conical shells.

  • The buckling analysis of Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastic pipes was studied through a three dimentsional finite element method. In the finite element analysis, an improved degenerated shell element with incompatible modes and assumed shear strain fields are employed with 3 displacements and 2 rotations for each joints. Buckling analysis is carried out for various thicknesses and different fiber orientations. Finite element results show that the buckling load increases as the thickness does with the variation of coupling stiffness.

  • For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.

  • The effect of 5 typical rise ratio(h/a=2/9, 5/18, l/3, l/2, 2/3) on the buckling characteristics of single-layer latticed domes with rectangular network under the external pressure are the theoretically studied on the basis of geometically nonlinear FEM and shell analogy method. The loading conditions are 4 types, that is, 1) the uniform pressure loading 2)the uniform snow loading 3) the half - sided asymmetric pressure loading 4) the half - sided asymmetric snow loading.
