  • The reliability and failure mode effect analysis are effective means to achieve efficient and cost-reduction design for satellite development. The failure rate of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) parts required for reliability analysis is not usually provided from the manufacturer. Space environment factors based on empirical data obtained from MIL-HDBK-217F can be applicable to the reliability calculation. As a radiation environment factor, the occurrence rate of SEL (Single Event Latch-up) is additionally incorporated for the failure rate prediction. In this paper, the statistical reliability analysis method for low-cost small satellite using COTS parts is suggested. This statistical reliability analysis was applied to HAUSAT-2 small satellite whose electronic boxes are consisted of many COTS parts to calculate the system reliability at the end of design mission life.

  • Currently, 22% of the total energy consumption of buildings in Korea is used for lighting. Light-shelves have garnered attention as a way to reduce consumption, but there are few studies on the types of curve and curvature, which limits the improvement of light-shelf performance and its design. This study constructed a test bed of actual residential types to evaluate the performance. Outcomes of light usage, according to variables of light-shelves, were used as indicators of performance evaluation. The results are as follows:1) Performance evaluation was conducted on flat-type light-shelves to verify performance of curvature-shelves, which are movable with a width of 200 mm, and the most ideal angle and specification per solar term are calculated. 2) The (-) shaped curvature contributed to a reduction in energy consumption and an improvement of evenness. 3) In case of light-shelves with (-) shaped curvature, an increased angle not exceeding $80^{\circ}$ of the arc contributed to an improvement of light penetration. 4) Appropriate specifications of curved light-shelves include movable types with widths of 200 mm, and angle ranges of $20^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}$. 5) Light energy consumption of a movable light-shelf with curvature and width of 200 mm were reduced by 17% and 7.8% compared to a $0^{\circ}$ fixed and a movable light-shelf, respectively.

  • A CubeSat platform has become a popular choice due to inexpensive commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components and low launch cost. However, it requires more power-efficient and higher-data rate downlink capability for space applications related to remote sensing. In addition, the platform is limited by the size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints as well as the regulatory issue of licensing the radio frequency (RF) spectrum. The requirements and limitations have put optical communications on promising alternatives to RF communications for a CubeSat platform, owing to the power efficiency and high data rate as well as the license free spectrum. In this study, we analyzed the performance of optical downlink communications compatible with CubeSat platforms in terms of data rate, bit error rate (BER) and outage probability. Mathematical models of BER and outage probability were derived based on not only the log-normal model of atmospheric turbulence but also a transmitter with a finite extinction ratio. Given the fixed slot width, the optimal guard time and modulation orders were chosen to achieve the target data rate. And the two performance metrics, BER and outage data rate, were analyzed and discussed with respect to beam divergence angle, scintillation index and zenith angle.

  • We construct improved geocentric digital elevation model (DEM), estimate tidal dynamics and ice stream velocity over Sulzberger Ice Shelf, West Antarctica employing differential interferograms from 12 ERS tandem mission Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images acquired in austral fall of 1996. Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) laser altimetry profiles acquired in the same season as the SAR scenes in 2004 are used as ground control points (GCPs) for Interferometric SAR (InSAR) DEM generation. 20 additional ICESat profiles acquired in 2003-2004 are then used to assess the accuracy of the DEM. The vertical accuracy of the OEM is estimated by comparing elevations with laser altimetry data from ICESat. The mean height difference between all ICESat data and DEM is -0.57m with a standard deviation of 5.88m. We demonstrate that ICESat elevations can be successfully used as GCPs to improve the accuracy of an InSAR derived DEM. In addition, the magnitude and the direction of tidal changes estimated from interferogram are compared with those predicted tidal differences from four ocean tide models. Tidal deformation measured in InSAR is -16.7cm and it agrees well within 3cm with predicted ones from tide models. Lastly, ice surface velocity is estimated by combining speckle matching technique and InSAR line-of-sight measurement. This study shows that the maximum speed and mean speed are 509 m/yr and 131 m/yr, respectively. Our results can be useful for the mass balance study in this area and sea level change.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the information behavior of the junior high school students in the public library and to find the effectiveness of the behavior analysis using a cognitive work analysis(CWA). Data was collected through a dept interview and an observation method. Results show that the students had four constraints when they searched materials for reports: relevant materials for reports, limitation of materials, opening hours, use possibility. There are three behavior types. A type is that students find materials on the shelf through searching an online catalog, then make a report using reading the materials. B type is that students find materials on the shelf and check out the materials. C type is that students find materials and check out them by library staff help. CWA can be used for the information behavior research on the library space. CWA can, however, apply for space redesign when various researches would be conducted about the information behavior.

  • This study aimed at developing tea furniture with beauty of traditional Korean furniture. As the population which drinks tea increases day by day in the light of LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) era, the importance of the tea culture has been brought out and the interest of the pieces has increased with the cultural space. But the study is still not only insufficient for Korean tea cultural space, it is but also hard for us to find such pieces as holding the original culture's charm. Thus, after studying concepts and spatial qualities of the tea cultural space based on the traditional culture and after investigating the tea objects including the integral parts, a piece of tea shelf with table which hits the emotion of Korea necessary to tea cultural space was created with solid wood. As a result, if we rediscover and develop the tea pieces with beauty of traditional Korean furniture mentioned as the green furniture, the objects will be standing on tiptoe as contemporary tea pieces conveying the identity of Korea. In addition, they will have a competitiveness across the world pursuing LOHAS beyond well-being.

  • BITSE is a project of balloon-borne experiments for a next-generation solar coronagraph developed by a collaboration with KASI and NASA. The coronagraph is built to observe the linearly polarized brightness of solar corona with a polarization camera, a filter wheel, and an aperture door. For the observation, the coronagraph is supported by the power distribution unit (PDU), a pointing system WASP (Wallops Arc-Second Pointer), telemetry & telecommand system SIP (Support Instrument Package) which are developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Wallops Flight Facility, and Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility. The BITSE Command and Data Handling (C&DH) system used a cost-off-the-shelf electronics to process all data sent and received by the coronagraph, including the support system operation by RS232/422, USB3, Ethernet, and digital and analog signals. The flight software is developed using the core Flight System (cFS) which is a reusable software framework and set of reusable software applications which take advantage of a rich heritage of successful space mission of NASA. The flight software can process encoding and decoding data, control the subsystems, and provide observation autonomy. We developed a python-based testing framework to improve software reliability. The flight software development is one of the crucial contributions of KASI and an important milestone for the next project which is developing a solar coronagraph to be installed at International Space Station.

  • The increased availability of store brand suppliers now provides retailers with opportunities to create their own lines of vertically differentiated multiple store brands within a product category. As the number of store brands increase, the retailer's shelf space becomes more crowded, which may force the retailer to consider dropping some national brands from its assortment. Despite these trends, the problem of product line design in a vertically differentiated product category has been analyzed mainly from a manufacturer's perspective in the marketing literature and it is not known to what extent the findings of the existing product line design literature provide applicable strategic guidelines for the new problem faced by retailers. In this study, we address this deficiency in the literature and conduct an in-depth study of the retailer's strategic design of a line of store brands and its assortment decision within the context of retail category management. We analyze the retailer's decision about not only how to design a line of store brands but also which national brand to drop from its assortment. The results of our analysis are as follows. First, if the retailer has to drop one of national brands from its assortment, it is the best for the retailer to drop the low-quality national brand rather than the high-quality national brand. Second, the retailer has to position the high-quality store brand relatively close to the high-quality national brand, remained on its shelf, in terms of quality so as to maximize the size of retail margin from the national brand. On the other hand, the retailer should set the quality of the low-quality store brand at a lower level than that of the low-quality national brand to increase the total category demand by attracting more price sensitive consumers. By doing so, the retailer can also minimize cannibalization between two store brands. Lastly, our analysis shows that the introduction of a line of store brands improves consumer welfare by increasing real values of all products on the shelf.

  • As a series of 'Performance Assessment of Building Envelopes I: Double Skin Facade', three types (interior, exterior, mixed (int.&ext.)) of lightshelves and RetroLux were examined in terms of $CO_2$ emissions. It is shown that the exterior lightshelf could achieve the most energy savings (9.6-38.7%) in general office buildings due to blocking solar radiation before entering the indoor space. However, the interior lightshelf is the worst (1.4-5.2%) among three of them. The RetroLux has two components: (1) sun-reflector (first louver component), (2) light shelf for improving daylight induction (second louver component). Due to these two components, solar radiation from windows is filtered depending on seasonal variation (solar altitude). Therefore, the RetroLux can reduce 18.0-27.9% of annual energy consumption (both cooling and heating), and $552-3,290Won/m^2{\cdot}yr$ of operation cost is saved.

  • The present paper reports on a trial to shed further light on the characterization, applications, and operation of radar speed guns or Gunn diodes on different radiation environments of neutron or g fields. To this end, theoretical and experimental investigations of microwave oscillating system for outer-space applications were carried out. Radiation effects on the transient parameters and electrical properties of the proposed devices have been studied in detail with the application of computer programming. Also, the oscillation parameters, power characteristics, and bias current were plotted under the influence of different ${\gamma}$ and neutron irradiation levels. Finally, shelf or oven annealing processes were shown to be satisfactory techniques to recover the initial characteristics of the irradiated devices.
