  • Approximate Constant Shear Angle Theory is usually used to take a transversal shear deformation of thick plate into consideration, which cannot be effectively considered the influence of transversal warping of cross-section with an increase of thickness. It right be the best way to represent the exact warping of cross-section. In this study, the derivation of warping function is attempted, and the effect of shear deformation and transversal warping is to be considered through the nolinear analysis of plate.

  • An improved shear deformable thin-walled curved beam theory to overcome the drawback of currently available beam theories is newly proposed for the spatially coupled free vibration and elastic analysis. For this, the displacement field considering the shear deformation effects is presented by introducing displacement parameters defined at the centroid and shear center axes. Next the elastic strain and kinetic energies considering the shear effects due to the shear forces and the restrained warping torsion are rigorously derived. Then the equilibrium equations are consistently derived for curved beams with non-symmetric thin-walled sections. It should be noticed that this formulation can be easily reduced to the warping-free beam theory by simply putting the sectional properties associated with warping to zero for curved beams with L- or T-shaped sections. Finally in order to illustrate the validity and the accuracy of this study, finite element solutions using the isoparametric curved beam elements are presented and compared with those in available references and ABAQUS's shell elements.

  • In this paper, a finite element structural analysis for thin-walled open-section composite beams with elastic couplings has been performed. The analysis includes the effects of transverse shear across beam sections, torsion warping and constrained warping. Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to obtain the beam st illness coefficients The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correct ion factors are obtained as part of the analysis. The resulting theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The static response has been validated against finite element predict ions, closed form solutions, and experimental data for rectangular sol id and I-beams with elastic couplings. The free vibration results are also compared with available literature.

  • The objective of this study is to predict fracture movements accurately and reliably by nonlinear analysis of the response of RC shear wall or RC flange sections. Hognestad's and Vallenas's theories are used for concrete model and Ramberg-Osgood's theory is used for steel model. Non-linear analysis considering confined concrete and unconfined concrete is performed. Mander's Fiber Approach Section analysis, new strain profile considering the Gamma factor are used to this section analysis. The section analysis considering cases of precracked, uncracked, boundary warping and shear warping is performed.

  • We describe a stress analysis of a single leaf flexure under torsion in which the warping effect is considered. The theoretical equations for the warping normal stress (${\sigma}_{xx}$) and shear stresses (${\tau}_{xz}$ and ${\tau}_{xy}$) are derived by applying the warping function of a rectangular cross-sectional beam and the twist angle equation that includes the warping torsion. The results are compared with those of the non-warping case and are verified using finite element analysis (FEA). A sensitivity analysis over the length, width, and thickness is performed and verified via FEA. The results show that the errors between the theory of warping stress results and the FEA results are lower than 4%. This indicates that the proposed theoretical stress analysis with warping is accurate in the torsion analysis of a single leaf flexure.

  • An enormous amount of efforts has been devoted to the development of finite elements for the bending problem of thick plates, especially based on Mindlin plate theory. Here, an approximate Constant Shear Angle Theory is usually used to take a transverse shear deformation of thick plate into consideration, which cannot be effectively considered the influence of transversal warping of cross-section with an increase of thickness. It might be the best way to represent the exact cross-sectional warping of the plate. The overall objective of this study is to develop a new formulation of plate including shear deformation and transversal warping, to perform extensive parametric studies comparing its results with those from Mindlin plate formulation, and to gain further insight into the influence of shear deformation and transversal warping of thick plate.

  • Accurate estimation of shear flows in thin-walled beam section is the key issue to evaluate shear stress distribution of ship hull transverse section under the shear forces acting on hull girder. It is regarded that the method using the warping functions obtained by finite element formulation is the state of the art of this field. Recently, however, IACS took effect the new version of CSR in which direct calculation process of shear flow was suggested. In the direct calculation process, shear flow of ship hull section can be obtained by the addition of determinate and indeterminate shear flows calculated respectively. So, in this paper, the shear flow evaluation codes based on the process proposed by IACS CSR and warping function based method were developed respectively. The calculated results of shear flows for the several examples of ship sections were compared with each other and considered in detail.

  • In this study, the stress distribution of rectangular bar under torsion, when warping of both ends is free or constrained, is investigated. Method of separation of variable and Fourier Series are used for the theoretical analysis, and 3dimensional photoelastic stress-freezing method for experimental analysis. The main results are as follows; 1) In the case of warping-constrained rectangular bar, the normal stresses are negligible because they are less then 0.5% of the shear stresses. The maximum normal stress is placed on the point of y=0.61 b when b/a=1 and it gradually moves to the corner y=b when the value of b/a is increased. 2) According to increase of the value of b/a, on the crossection, the maximum shear stress is placed on the middle point of the long side (x=${\pm}a$, y=0) when warping of both ends is free but the middle of the short side (x=0, y=${\pm} b$) when warping is constrained. The stress distribution is straight line when warping is constrained, namely, the stress distribution is proportional to the distance from the axis of centroid, but parabolic when warping is free. 3) The values of the combined stress of warping-constrained bar, if the influence of the loaded point is neglected, are generally smaller than those of warping-free.

  • The theory with hierarchical warping functions had been used to analyze composite thin-walled structure, laminated beam and had good results. In the present paper, a series of hierarchical warping functions are developed to analyze the cylindrical bending problems of composite lamina. These warping functions which refine through-the-thickness variation of displacements were composed of basic and corrective functions by taking into account of anisotropic, material discontinues, and transverse shear and normal strain. Then the hierarchical finite element method was used to form a numerical algorithm. The distribution of the displacements, in-plane stresses, transverse shear stresses and transverse normal stress for composite laminate were analyzed with the present model. The results show that the present model has precise mechanical response compared with the first deformation transverse theory and the corrective order affects the accuracy of result.

  • In this study, the theoretical dynamic characteristics of a thin-walled composite beam with a single-cell of chordwise asymmetric cross-section was studied. Mathematical modeling was done by considering the transverse shear effects, the warping restraint effects, the constant taper ratio in the longitudinal direction of the beam, and the geometrical cross-section ratio. The mass coefficients, stiffness coefficients, and Eigen frequencies of the selected section were investigated. In particular, the effects of the taper ratio and cross-section ratio of the model on the Eigen frequencies were analyzed and compared when the asymmetry of the section was considered and the warping function was not corrected.
