Numerical simulations based on the ALE finite element method are carried out to examine the aerodynamics of an oscillating circular cylinder when the separated shear flows around the cylinder are stimulated by periodic jet excitation with a shear layer instability frequency. The excitation is applied to the flows from two points on the cylinder surface. The numerical results showed that the excitation with a shear layer instability frequency can reduce the negative damping and thereby stabilize the aerodynamics of the oscillating cylinder. The change of the lift phase seems important in stabilizing the cylinder aerodynamics. The change of lift phase is caused by the merger of the vortices induced by the periodic excitation with a shear layer instability frequency, and the vortex merging comes from the high growth rate, the rapid increase of wave number and decrease of phase velocity for the periodic excitation in the separated shear flows.
The effect of an external acoustic excitation on the wake structure behind a circular cylinder was experimentally investigated. The sound wave was excited in the frequency range of the shear layer instability and two sound pressure levels of 114 and 120dB were used in this study. As a result, the acoustic excitation modified the wake structure by increasing the velocity fluctuation energy without changing the vortex shedding frequency. The acoustic excitation enhanced the vortex shedding process and promoted the shear layer instability. Consequently, the acoustic excitation reduced the length of the vortex formation region and decreased the base pressure. In addition, the vortex strength of vortices was increased and the width of the wake was spread out due to the acoustic excitation. When the excitation frequency was identical to the shear layer instability frequency, the effect of the external flow control on the cylinder wake was maximized. In addition, with increasing the sound pressure level, the effect of the external acoustic excitation on the wake structure increased.

Concave surface boundary-layer flows are subjected to centrifugal instability which results in the formation of streamwise counter-rotating vortices. Such boundary layer flows have been experimentally investigated on concave surfaces of 1 m and 2 m radius of curvature. In the experiments, to obtain uniform vortex wavelengths, thin perturbation wires placed upstream and perpendicular to the concave surface leading edge, were used to pre-set the wavelengths. Velocity contours were obtained from hot-wire anemometer velocity measurements. The most amplified vortex wavelengths can be pre-set by the spanwise spacing of the thin wires and the free-stream velocity. The velocity contours on the cross-sectional planes at several streamwise locations show the growth and breakdown of the vortices. Three different vortex growth regions can be identified. The occurrence of a secondary instability mode is also shown as mushroom-like structures as a consequence of the non-linear growth of the streamwise vortices. Wall shear stress measurements on concave surface of 1 m radius of curvature reveal that the spanwise-averaged wall shear stress increases well beyond the flat plate boundary layer values. By pre-setting much larger or much smaller vortex wavelength than the most amplified one, the splitting or merging of the streamwise vortices will respectively occur.
The linear instability of reacting shear flow is analyzed with special emphasis on the effects of the heat release and variable transport properties. Both analytic profiles and laminar solutions of the boundary-layer equations are used as base flows. The growth rates of the instabilities are sensitive to the laminar profiles, differing by more than a factor of 2 according to which profile is used. Thus, it is important to base the analysis on accurate laminar profiles. Accounting for variable transport properties also changes the mean profiles considerably, and so including them in the computation of the laminar profiles is equally important. At larger heat release, two modes that are stronger in the outer part of the shear layer have the highest growth rates; they also have shorter wavelengths than the center mode.
It has been known that there is a viscoelastic instability in the channel flow past a cylinder at high Deborah (De) number. Some of our numerical simulations and a boundary layer analysis indicated that this instability is related to the shear flow in the gap between the cylinder and the channel walls in our previous work. The critical condition for instability initiation may be related to an inflection velocity profile generated by the normal stress near the cylinder surface. At high De, the elastic normal stress coupling with the streamline curvature is responsible for the shear instability, which has been recognized by the community. In this study, an instability criterion for the flow problem is proposed based on the analysis on the pressure gradient and some supporting numerical simulations. The critical De number for various model fluids is given. It increases with the geometrical aspect ratio h/R (half channel width/cylinder radius) and depends on a viscosity ratio ${\beta}$(polymer viscosity/total viscosity) of the model. A shear thinning first normal stress coefficient will delay the instability. An excellent agreement between the predicted critical Deborah number and reported experiments is obtained.
This paper presents the development of an educational management model for analyzing the dynamic instability of nanocomposite sandwich beams. The model aims to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the behavior of sandwich micro beams with foam cores, featuring top and bottom layers made of smart and porous functionally graded materials (FGM) nanocomposites. The bottom layer is influenced by an external electric field, and the entire beam is supported by a visco-Pasternak foundation, accounting for spring, shear, and damping constants. Using the Kelvin-Voigt theory to model structural damping and incorporating size effects based on strain gradient theory, the model employs the parabolic shear deformation beam theory (PSDBT) to derive motion equations through Hamilton's principle. The differential quadrature method (DQM) is applied to solve these equations, accurately identifying the improvement in student understanding (ISU) of the beams. The impact of various parameters, including FGM properties, external voltage, geometric constants, and structural damping, on the DIR is thoroughly examined. The educational model is validated by comparing its outcomes with existing studies, highlighting the increase in ISU with the application of negative external voltage to the smart layer. This model serves as a valuable educational tool for engineering students and researchers studying the dynamic stability of advanced nanocomposite structures.
The results of measurements of shear current induced in water by wind in wind wave tunnel are presented briefly. The shear current distributions are found to fit reasonably well an exponentiall form. This form was used to estimate surface velocity and boundary layer thickness used in stability analysis. An analysis of hydrodynamic stability of the shear current was carried out, using a broken line as an approximate profile, to see the stability as a possible mechanism of wind wave generation. Comparison between experimental results and theoretical ones shows that there exists a large discrepancy particularly in phase velocity and hydrodynamic instability of the shear current seems not to be the basic mechanism of wind wave generation.
In order to analyse the mechanism of a flow tone around a cavity, the correlations between the flow in the cavity and the boundary layer flow in front of the cavity are studied experimentally in this paper. The instability In the boundary layer forms the vortex at the front edge of the cavity and the flow tone is occurred by the vortex breakdown at the rear edge of the cavity Therefore, the boundary layer measurement is important in the cavity flow control. We measure the velocity of the boundary layer at the entrance of the cavity using hot-wire anemometry and the flow tone around the cavity by microphone. The boundary layer characteristic is changed by the various angle of the flap on the front edge of the cavity, while it is less influenced by the ratio of length and depth of the cavity.
This paper studies the dynamic instability of laminated composite plates under thermal and arbitrary in-plane periodic loads using first-order shear deformation plate theory. The governing partial differential equations of motion are established by a perturbation technique. Then, the Galerkin method is applied to reduce the partial differential equations to ordinary differential equations. Based on Bolotin's method, the system equations of Mathieu-type are formulated and used to determine dynamic instability regions of laminated plates in the thermal environment. The effects of temperature, layer number, modulus ratio and load parameters on the dynamic instability of laminated plates are investigated. The results reveal that static and dynamic load, layer number, modulus ratio and uniform temperature rise have a significant influence on the thermal dynamic behavior of laminated plates.
The dynamic instability analysis of delaminated composite structures subjected to in-plane pulsating forces is carried out based on the higher order shell theory of Sanders. In the finite element (FE) formulation, the seven degrees of freedom per each node are used with transformations in order to fit the displacement continuity conditions at the delamination region. The boundaries of the instability regions are determined using the method proposed by Bolotin. The numerical results obtained for skew plates and shells are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. The new results for delaminated skew plate and shell structures in this study mainly show the effect of the interactions between the radius-length ratio and other various parameters, for example, skew angles, delamination size, the fiber angle of layer and location of delamination in the layer direction. The effect of the magnitude of the periodic in-plane load on the instability regions is also investigated.
