  • In this current work a quasi 3D "trigonometric shear deformation theory" is proposed and discussed for the dynamic of thick orthotropic plates. Contrary to the classical "higher order shear deformation theories" (HSDT) and the "first shear deformation theory" (FSDT), the constructed theory utilizes a new displacement field which includes "undetermined integral terms" and presents only three "variables". In this model the axial displacement utilizes sinusoidal mathematical function in terms of z coordinate to introduce the shear strain impact. The cosine mathematical function in terms of z coordinate is employed in vertical displacement to introduce the impact of transverse "normal deformation". The motion equations of the model are found via the concept of virtual work. Numerical results found for frequency of "flexural mode", mode of shear and mode of thickness stretch impact of dynamic of simply supported "orthotropic" structures are compared and verified with those of other HSDTs and method of elasticity wherever considered.

  • This paper presents an improved 8-node shell element for the analysis of plates and shells. The finite element, based on a refined first-order shear deformation theory, is further improved by the combined use of assumed natural strain method. We analyze the influence of the shell element with the different patterns of sampling points for interpolating different components of strains. Using the assumed natural strain method with proper interpolation functions, the present shell element generates neither membrane nor shear locking behavior even when full integration is used in the formulation. Further, a refined first-order shear deformation theory, which results in parabolic through-thickness distribution of the transverse shear strains from the formulation based on the third-order shear deformation theory, is proposed. This formulation eliminates the need for shear correction factors in the first-order theory. Numerical examples demonstrate that the present element perform better in comparison with other shell elements.

  • In this work, dynamic behavior of functionally graded (FG) porous nano-beams is studied based on nonlocal nth-order shear deformation theory which takes into the effect of shear deformation without considering shear correction factors. It has been observed that during the manufacture of "functionally graded materials" (FGMs), micro-voids and porosities can occur inside the material. Thus, in this work, the investigation of the dynamic analysis of FG beams taking into account the influence of these imperfections is established. Material characteristics of the FG beam are supposed to be vary continuously within thickness direction according to a "power-law scheme" which is modified to approximate material characteristics for considering the influence of porosities. A comparative study with the known results in the literature confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the current nonlocal nth-order shear deformation theory.

  • In present work, both the hyperbolic shear deformation theory and stress function concept are used to study the mechanical and thermal stability responses of functionally graded (FG) plates resting on elastic foundation. The accuracy of the proposed formulation is checked by comparing the computed results with those predicted by classical plate theory (CPT), first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). Moreover, results demonstrate that the proposed formulation can achieve the same accuracy of the existing HSDTs which have more number of governing equations.

  • In this paper, a new first-order shear deformation beam theory based on neutral surface position is developed for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. The proposed theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components, in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The neutral surface position for a functionally graded beam which its material properties vary in the thickness direction is determined. Based on the present new first-order shear deformation beam theory and the neutral surface concept together with Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. To examine accuracy of the present formulation, several comparison studies are investigated. Furthermore, the effects of different parameters of the beam on the bending and free vibration responses of functionally graded beam are discussed.

  • In this work, a nonlocal quasi-3D trigonometric plate theory for micro/nanoscale plates is proposed. In order to introduce the size influences, the Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is utilized. In addition, the theory considers both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects by a trigonometric variation of all displacements within the thickness, and respects the stress-free boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without considering the shear correction factor. The advantage of this theory is that, in addition to considering the small scale and thickness stretching effects (${\varepsilon}_z{\neq}0$), the displacement field is modelled with only 5 unknowns as the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Analytical solutions for vibration of simply supported micro/nanoscale plates are illustrated, and the computed results are compared with the available solutions in the literature and finite element model using ABAQUS software package. The influences of the nonlocal parameter, shear deformation and thickness stretching on the vibration behaviors of the micro/nanoscale plates are examined.

  • In this paper, a refined exponential shear deformation beam theory is developed for bending analysis of functionally graded beams. The theory account for parabolic variation of transverse shear strain through the depth of the beam and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the beam without using shear correction factors. Contrary to the others refined theories elaborated, where the stretching effect is neglected, in the current investigation this so-called "stretching effect" is taken into consideration. The material properties of the functionally graded beam are assumed to vary according to power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Based on the present shear deformation beam theory, the equilibrium equations are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Analytical solutions for static are obtained. Numerical examples are presented to verify the accuracy of the present theory.

  • A higher-oder laminated plate theory including the effect of transverse shear deformation is developed to calculate the gross response and the detailed stress distribution. The theory satisfies the continuity condition of transverse shear stress, and accounts for parabolic variation of the transverse shear stresses through the thickness of each layer. Exact closed-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and a simple higher-order theory solutions. The results of the present work exhibit acceptable accuracy when compared to the three-dimensional elasticity solutions.
