  • Free vibration of symmetric angle-ply layered conical shell frusta of variable thickness is analyzed under shear deformation theory with different boundary conditions by applying collocation with spline approximation. Linear and exponential variation in thickness of layers are assumed in axial direction. Displacements and rotational functions are approximated by Bickley-type splines of order three and obtained a generalized eigenvalue problem. This problem is solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The vibration of three and five-layered conical shells, made up of two different type of materials are considered. Parametric studies are made for analysing the frequencies of the shell with respect to the coefficients of thickness variations, length-to-radius ratio, length-to-thickness ratio and ply angles with different combination of the materials. The results are compared with the available data and new results are presented in terms of tables and graphs.

  • In the present work, the recently developed non-polynomial shear deformation theories are assessed for thermo-mechanical response characteristics of laminated composite plates. The applicability and accuracy of these theories for static, buckling and free vibration responses were ascertained in the recent past by several authors. However, the assessment of these theories for thermo-mechanical analysis of the laminated composite structures is still to be ascertained. The response characteristics are investigated in linear and non-linear thermal gradient and also in the presence and absence of mechanical transverse loads. The laminated composite plates are modelled using recently developed six shear deformation theories involving different shear strain functions. The principle of virtual work is used to develop the governing system of equations. The Navier type closed form solution is adopted to yield the exact solution of the developed equation for simply supported cross ply laminated plates. The thermo-mechanical response characteristics due to these six different theories are obtained and compared with the existing results.

  • The objective of this study is to simulate the two-phase flow in pipes with various two-fluid models and determinate the shear stress. A hyperbolic shear deformation theory is used for modelling of the pipe. Two-fluid models are solved by using the conservative shock capturing method. Energy relations are used for deriving the motion equations. When the initial conditions of problem satisfied the Kelvin Helmholtz instability conditions, the free-pressure two-fluid model could accurately predict discontinuities in the solution field. A numerical solution is applied for computing the shear stress. The two-pressure two-fluid model produces more numerical diffusion compared to the free-pressure two-fluid and single-pressure two-fluid models. Results show that with increasing the two-phase percent, the shear stress is reduced.

  • In this work, the buckling analysis of material sandwich plates based on a two-parameter elastic foundation under various boundary conditions is investigated on the basis of a new theory of refined trigonometric shear deformation. This theory includes indeterminate integral variables and contains only four unknowns in which any shear correction factor not used, with even less than the conventional theory of first shear strain (FSDT). Applying the principle of virtual displacements, the governing equations and boundary conditions are obtained. To solve the buckling problem for different boundary conditions, Galerkin's approach is utilized for symmetric EGM sandwich plates with six different boundary conditions. A detailed numerical study is carried out to examine the influence of plate aspect ratio, elastic foundation coefficients, ratio, side-to-thickness ratio and boundary conditions on the buckling response of FGM sandwich plates. A good agreement between the results obtained and the available solutions of existing shear deformation theories that have a greater number of unknowns proves to demonstrate the precision of the proposed theory.

  • This paper formulates a new integral shear deformation shell theory to investigate the free vibration response of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced structures with only four independent variables, unlike existing shell theories, which invariably and implicitly induce a host of unknowns. This approach guarantees traction-free boundary conditions without shear correction factors, using a non-polynomial hyperbolic warping function for transverse shear deformation and stress. By introducing undetermined integral terms, it will be possible to derive the motion equations with a low order of differentiation, which can facilitate a closed-form solution in conjunction with Navier's procedure. The mechanical properties of the CNT reinforcements are modeled to vary smoothly and gradually through the thickness coordinate, exhibiting different distribution patterns. A comparison study is performed to prove the efficacy of the formulated shell theory via obtained results from existing literature. Further numerical investigations are current and comprehensive in detailing the effects of CNT distribution patterns, volume fractions, and geometrical configurations on the fundamental frequencies of CNT-reinforced nanocomposite shells present here. The current shell theory is assumed to serve as a potent conceptual framework for designing reinforced structures and assessing their mechanical behavior.

  • In this scientific work, an analytical solution for the dynamic analysis of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite plates is proposed. Due to technical issues during the manufacturing of composite materials, porosities and micro-voids can be produced within the composite material samples, which can carry on to a reduction in the density and strength of the materials. In this research, the laminated composite plates are assumed to have new distributions of porosities over the plate cross-section. The structure is modeled using a simple integral shear deformation theory in which the transverse shear deformation effect is included. The governing equations of motion are obtained employing the principle of Hamilton's. The solution is determined via Navier's approach. The Maple program is used to obtain the numerical results. In the numerical examples, the effects of geometry, ratio, modulus ratio, fiber orientation angle, number of layers and porosity parameter on the natural frequencies of symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated composite plates is presented and discussed in detail. Also, the impacts of the kinds of porosity distribution models on the natural frequencies of symmetric and anti-symmetric laminated composite plates are investigated.

  • This paper presents an experimental study of six steel reinforced high strength concrete T-shaped short-limb shear walls configured with T-shaped steel truss under low cyclic reversed loading. Considering different categories of ratios of wall limb height to thickness, shear/span ratios, axial compression ratios and stirrup reinforcement ratios were selected to investigate the seismic behavior (strength, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity, ductility and deformation characteristics) of all the specimens. Two different failure modes were observed during the tests, including the flexural-shear failure for specimens with large shear/span ratio and the shear-diagonal compressive failure for specimens with small shear/span ratio. On the basis of requirement of Chinese seismic code, the deformation performance for all the specimens could not meet the level of 'three' fortification goals. Recommendations for improving the structural deformation capacity of T-shaped steel reinforced high strength concrete short-limb shear wall were proposed. Based on the experimental observations, the mechanical analysis models for concrete cracking strength and shear strength were derived using the equivalence principle and superposition theory, respectively. As a result, the proposed method in this paper was verified by the test results, and the experimental results agreed well with the proposed model.

  • This paper uses a new type of deformation theory to establish the free vibration and static buckling equations of nanoplates resting on two-parameter elastic foundations, in which the flexoelectric effect is taken into account. The proposed approach used in this work is not only simpler than other higher-order shear deformation theories but also does not need any shear correction coefficients to describe exactly the mechanical responses of structures. The reliability of the theory is verified by comparing the numerical results of this work with those of analytical solutions. The results show that the flexoelectric effect significantly changes the natural frequency and the critical buckling load of the nanoplate compared with the case of neglecting this effect, especially when the plate thickness changes and with some different boundary conditions. These are new results that have not been mentioned in any publications but are meaningful in engineering practice.

  • A two new high-order shear deformation theory for bending analysis is presented for a simply supported, functionally graded plate with porosities resting on an elastic foundation. This porosities may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication, while material properties varying to a simple power-law distribution along the thickness direction. Unlike other theories, there are only four unknown functions involved, as compared to five in other shear deformation theories. The theories presented are variationally consistent and strongly similar to the classical plate theory in many aspects. It does not require the shear correction factor, and gives rise to the transverse shear stress variation so that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness to satisfy free surface conditions for the shear stress. It is established that the volume fraction of porosity significantly affect the mechanical behavior of thick function ally graded plates. The validity of the two new theories is shown by comparing the present results with other higher-order theories. The influence of material parameter, the volume fraction of porosity and the thickness ratio on the behavior mechanical P-FGM plate are represented by numerical examples.
