Flame bending has been extensively used in the shipbuilding industry for hull plate forming In flame bending it is difficult to obtain the desired shape because the residual deformation dependson the complex temperature distribution and the thermal plastic strain. Mechanical bending such as reconfigurable press forming multi-point press forming or die-less forming has been found to improve the automation of hull plateforming because it can more accurately control the desired shape than line heating. Multi-point forming is a process in which external forces are used to form metal work-pieces. Therefore it can be a flexible and efficient forming technique. This paper presents an optimal approach to determining the press-stroke for multi-point press forming of curved shapes. An integrated configuration of Finite element analysis (FEA) and spring-back compensation algorithm is developed to calculate the strokes of the multi-point press. Not only spring-back is modeled by elastic plastic shell elements but also an iterative algorithm to compensate the spring-back is applied to adjust the amount of pressing stroke. An iterative displacement adjustment (IDA) method is applied by integration of the FEA procedure and the spring-back compensation work. Shape deviation between the desired surface and deform£d plate is minimized by the IDA algorithm.

The study examines the limit strength for steel cable-stayed bridges. A case studies have been performed in order to evaluate the limit strength lot steel cable-stayed bridges using nonlinear inelastic analysis approach and bifurcation point instability analysis approach, effective tangent modulus $(E_f)$ method. To realize it, a practical nonlinear inelastic analysis condoling the initial shape is developed. In the initial shape analysis, updated structural configuration is introduced instead of initial member forces for beam-column members at every iterative step. Geometric and material nonlinearities of beam-column members are accounted by using stability function, and by using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function, respectively Besides, geometric nonlinearity of cable members is accounted by using secant value of equivalent modulus of elasticity. The load-displacement relationships obtained by the proposed method are compared well with those given by other approaches. The limit strengths evaluated by the proposed nonlinear inelastic analysis for the proposed cable-stayed bridges with tee dimensional configuration compared with those by the inelastic bifurcation point instability analyses.

A new enhanced 8-node hybrid/mixed plane stress elements based on assumed stress fields and modifed shape functions has been presented. The assumed stress fields are derived from the non-conforming displacement modes, which are less sensitive to geometric distortion. Explicit expression of shape functions is modifed so that it can represent any quadratic fields in Cartesian coordinates under the same condition as 9-node isoparametric element. The newly developed element has been designated as 'HQ8-$14{\beta}$'. The presented element is compared with existing elements to establish its accuracy and efficiency. Over a wide range of mesh distortions, the element presented here is found to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements.
This paper presents analysis of the interaction between tunnel and Qanat with a particular interest for the optimization of Qanat shape using the discrete element code, PFC2D, and the results will be compared with the FEM results of PLAXIS2D. For these concerns, using software PFC2D based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), a model with dimension of 100m ⁎ 100 m was prepared. A circular tunnel with dimension of 9 m was situated 20 m below the ground surface. Also one Qanat was situated perpendicularly above the tunnel roof. Distance between Qanat center and ground surface was 8 m. Five different shapes for Qanat were selected i.e., square, semi-circular, vertical ellipse, circular and horizontal ellipse. Confining pressure of 5 MPa was applied to the model. The vertical displacement of balls situated in ground surface was picked up to measure the ground subsidence. Also two measuring circles were situated at the tunnel roof and at the Qanat roof to check the vertical displacements. The properties of the alluvial soil of Tehran city are: γdry=19 (KN/㎥), E= 750 (kg/㎠), ν=0.35, c=0.3(kg/㎠), φ=34°. In order to validate the DEM results, a comparison between the numerical results (obtained in this study) and analytical and field monitoring have been done. The PFC2D results are compared with the FEM results. The results shows that when Qanat has rectangular shape, the tensile stress concentration at the Qanat corners has maximum value while it has minimum value for vertical ellipse shape. The ground subsidence for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. The vertical displacements at the tunnel roof for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. Historical shape of Qante approved the finding of this research.

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) find many applications in smart composite structural systems as the active components. Their ability to provide a high force and large displacement makes them an excellent candidate for an actuator for controlling the shape of smart structures. In this paper, using a macroscopic model that captures the thermo-mechanical behaviors and the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) of SMAs smart morphing polymeric composite shell structures like shape-changeable UAV wings is demonstrated and analyzed numerically and experimentally when subjected to various kinds of pressure loads. The controllable shapes of the morphing shells to that thin SMA strip actuator are attached are investigated depending on various phase transformation temperatures. SMA strips start to transform from the martensitic into the austenitic state upon actuation through resistive heating, simultaneously recover the prestrain, and thus cause the shell structures to deform three dimensionally. The behaviors of composite shells attached with SMA strip actuators are analyzed using the finite element methods and 3-D constitutive equations of SMAs. Several morphing composite shell structures are fabricated and their experimental shape changes depending on temperatures are compared to the numerical results. That two results show good correlations indicates the finite element analysis and 3-D constitutive equations are accurate enough to utilize them for the design of smart composite shell structures for various applications.

A general formulation for shape design sensitivity analysis over three dimensional beam structure is developed based on a variational formulation of the beam in linear elasticity. Sensitivity formula is derived based on variational equations in cartesian coordinates using the material derivative concept and adjoint variable method for the displacement and Von-Mises stress functionals. Shape variation is considered for the beam shape in general 3-dimensional direction as well as for the orientation angle of the beam cross section. In the sensitivity expression, the end points evaluation at each beam segment is added to the integral formula, which are summed over the entire structure. The sensitivity formula can be evaluated with generality and ease even by employing piecewise linear design velocity field despite the bending model is fourth order differential equation. For the numerical implementation, commercial software ANSYS is used as analysis tool for the primal and adjoint analysis. Once the design variable set is defined using ANSYS language, shape and orientation variation vector at each node is generated by making finite difference to the shape with respect to each design parameter, and is used for the computation of sensitivity formula. Several numerical examples are taken to show the advantage of the method, in which the accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated. The results are found excellent even by employing a simple linear function for the design velocity evaluation. Shape optimization is carried out for the geometric design of an archgrid and tilted bridge, which is to minimize maximum stress over the structure while maintaining constant weight. In conclusion, the proposed formulation is a useful and easy tool in finding optimum shape in a variety of the spatial frame structures.

Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using hysteretic damper is shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. A mechanical model is determined that can effectively portray the behavior of a typical E-shape device. Comparison with experimental results for a hysteretic damper indicates that the model is accurate over a wide range of operating conditions and adequate for analysis. The seismic performance of hysteretic dampers are studied and compared with the conventional systems as a base isolation system. A five-story building is modeled and the seismic performance of the systems subjected to three different earthquake is compared. The results show that the hysteretic damper system can provide superior protection than the other systems for a wide range of ground motions.
In pulse diagnosis, the indentation pressure is one of the most important factors as well as the change of pulse shape and the distribution of pressure via time. But, on the oriental medical doctor's indentation pressure control, the understandings of the neurophysiological meanings and mechanisms have been lacked. So, in this paper, we considered on these issues and then proposed a proper system which can imitate the OMD's indentation pressure control mechanisms. As a result, both tactile information and kinesthetic information were found to be essential to the indentation pressure control so that a system, which can measure both the physical indent pressure and the displacement of an indentation arm, has been proposed. With this proposed system, while the indentation was being controlled through the moving step number of the step motor, the physical indentation pres sure and displacement of the indentation arm were measured. From these measured data, the relationships between the moving step number and both physical indentation pressure and displacement were revealed to have linear characteristics in early phase and to have nonlinear characteristics in latter phase. Additionally, three types of graph were generated whose X axis means the moving step number, the physical indentation pressure and the displacement respectively and Y axis means the pulse pressure. By comparing these graphs, we come to conclude that different concepts on indentation pressure control cause different diagnostic results on floating/sinking degrees for the same subject. Consequently, an indentation system for the pulse diagnosis should be able to provide both the tactile information and kinesthetic information, that is, the physical indentation pressure and the displacement of the indentation arm. In future, the proposed system should be optimized to the pulse diagnosis environment and how to combine the both information for more reliable diagnosis should be studied.
A new damage detection technique using static displacement data was developed, in order to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, the variation of natural frequencies is intrinsically insensitive to the damage of the bridge: thus, it is usually difficult to obtain them from the measured data. The proposed detection method enables the estimation of the stiffness reduction of bridges using the static displacement data that are measured periodically, without requiring a specific loading test. Devices such as a laser displacement sensor can be used to measure static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Likewise, the proposed algorithm was verified using various numerical simulations and compared with other damage detection methods. The effects of noise and number of damaged elements on damage detection were also investigated. Results showed that the proposed algorithm efficiently detects damage on the bridge.

Earthquake time-history analyses have been carried out for a buried gas pipeline of X65 which is of popular use in Korea. Parameters included are shape of a buried gas pipeline, soil characteristics, single and multiple earthquake input ground motions and burial depths. Predicted response of strain and relative displacement are then compared with allowable strain and displacement capacity calculated by Guidelines for the Seismic Design of Buried Gas Pipelines, KOGAS. Comparative studies show that strains are in general affected by the burial depths together with change of soil conditions. Regarding the relative displacement, while axial relative displacement is not influenced by the burial depths, transverse relative displacement is affected by both burial depths as well as soil conditions. In all, the current study is encouraged to give a useful information for healthy earthquake evaluation of a buried pipeline.
