Theoretical, empirical and numerical methods are used to evaluate the rock load due to tunnelling. Theoretical and empirical methods do not consider ground conditions, tunnel shape, and construction conditions. However, through numerical analysis, it is possible to analyze the displacement and stresses around tunnel due to its excavation, and evaluate the rock load considering ground and construction conditions. The stress transfer ratio(e) which is defined as a ratio of the difference between the major and minor principal stresses to major principal stress is used in order to understand the stress transfer effect around the tunnel excavation using numerical analysis results. The loosend area around tunnel periphery was found based on this approach. The difference of rock load from stress transfer effect was found according to the ground grade. From comparison, rock load obtained from stress transfer effect (e = 10%) were somewhat larger than the results obtained from the critical strain method, but smaller than those obtained from theoretical and empirical methods. The stress transfer effect approach considers the ground condition, tunnel shape; therefore, it can be applied to evaluate the rock load in concrete lining design.

Flexible base isolation bearings that separate superstructure from ground have been widely used in the construction field because they make a significant contribution to increasing the fundamental period of the structure, thereby decreasing response acceleration transmitted into the superstructure. However, the established bearing devices installed to uphold the whole building give rise to some problems involved with failure and collapse due to lack of the capacity as modern structures are getting more massive and higher. Therefore, this study suggests new isolation bearings assembled with additional restrainers enabled to reinforcing and recentering, and then evaluates their performance to withstand the seismic load. The superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) bars are installed into the conventional lead-rubber bearing (LRB) devices in order to provide recentering forces. These new systems are modeled as component spring models for the purpose of conducting nonlinear dynamic analyses with near fault ground motion data. The LRB devices with steel bars are also designed and analyzed to compare their responses with those of new systems. After numerical analyses, ultimate strength, maximum displacement, permanent deformation, and recentering ratio are compared to each model with an aim to investigate which base isolation models are superior. It can be shown that LRB models with superelastic SMA bars are superior to other models compared to each other in terms of seismic resistance and recentering effect.
In recent years, the stability, safety and comfort of trains has received increased attention. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of the foundation are the main problems studied in high-speed railway research. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of the foundation are greatly affected by the ground treatment. Additionally, the effects of train load and earthquakes have a great impact. The dynamic action of the train will increase the vibration acceleration of the foundation and increase the cumulative deformation, and the earthquake action will affect the stability of the substructure. Earthquakes have an important practical significance for the dynamic analysis of the railway operation stage; therefore, considering the impact of earthquakes on the railway substructure stability has engineering significance. In this paper, finite element model of the CFG (Cement Fly-ash Gravel) pile + cement-soil compacted pile about composite foundation is established, and manual numerical incentive method is selected as the simulation principle. The mechanical characteristics and differential settlement of CFG pile + cement-soil compacted pile about composite foundation under train load are studied. The results show: under the train load, the neutral point of the side friction about CFG pile is located at nearly 7/8 of the pile length; the vertical dynamic stress-time history curves of the cement-soil compacted pile, CFG pile and soil between piles are all regular serrated shape, the vertical dynamic stress of CFG pile changes greatly, but the vertical dynamic stress of cement-soil compacted pile and soil between piles does not change much; the vertical displacement of CFG pile, cement-soil compacted pile and soil between piles change very little.

Korean small coastal fishing boats have the different kind of fisheries and customs against Japanese fishing boats. Those bring some influences on the principal parameters of hull form. In same displacement, Korean small coastal fishing boat has generally shorter length, draft and wider breadth than Japanese fishing boat. Furthermore, even though the parameters of each hull form are similar, it is known that the resistance performance of Korean small coastal fishing boat is worse than that of Japanese fishing boat. In this study, the representative hull forms of Korean and Japanese small coastal fishing boats are selected and compared to evaluate the resistance performance of Korean fishing boat in low-speed range. The hull form of the Korean fishing boat is modified as comparison with that of the Japanese fishing boat to confirm the partial characteristic differences between the hull forms and the resistance performances. The representative partial characteristics of hull form are the gradient of chine line, keel shape and stern length. The resistance performances of the modified hull forms are evaluated by INHAWAVE which is one of CFD program and model tests in towing tank. The results of the present study will be used to improve the resistance performance and to develop the practical hull form of Korean small coastal fishing boats as principal data in the preliminary hull form design of fishing boats.
In this article, vibrational behavior and wave propagation characteristics in (FG) functionally graded plates resting on Kerr foundation with three parameters is studied using a 2D dimensional (HSDT) higher shear deformation theory. The new 2D higher shear deformation theory has only four variables in field's displacement, which means has few numbers of unknowns compared with others theories. The shape function used in this theory satisfies the nullity conditions of the shear stresses on the two surfaces of the FG plate without using shear correction factors. The FG plates are considered to rest on the Kerr layer, which is interconnected with a Pasternak-Kerr shear layer. The FG plate is materially inhomogeneous. The material properties are supposed to vary smoothly according to the thickness of the plate by a Voigt's power mixing law of the volume fraction. The equations of motion due to the dynamics of the plate resting on a three-parameter foundation are derived using the principle of minimization of energies; which are then solved analytically by the Navier technique to find the vibratory characteristics of a simply supported plate, and the wave propagation results are derived by using the dispersion relations. Perceivable numerical results are fulfilled to evaluate the vibratory and the wave propagation characteristics in functionally graded plates and some parameters such wave number, thickness ratio, power index and foundation parameters are discussed in detail.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to accurately analyze the radiographic characteristics of dentigerous cyst (DC) with multiplanar images of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods : Thirty eight radiographically and histopathologically proven cases of DCs were analyzed with panoramic radiograph and CBCT, retrospectively. The radiographic CT pattern, symmetry of radiolucency around the unerupted tooth crown, ratio of long length to short length, degree of cortical bone alternation, effects on adjacent tooth, and cyst size were analyzed. Relative frequencies of these radiographic features were evaluated. In order to compare the CBCT features of DC with those of odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), 9 cases of OKCs were analyzed with the same method radiographically. Results : DCs consisted of thirty unilocular cases (79.0%), seven lobulated cases (18.4%) and one multilocular case (2.6%). Eight were asymmetric (21.0%) and thirty were symmetric (79.0%). Maxillary DC showed rounder shape than mandibular DC (L/S ratio; maxilla 1.32, mandible 1.67). Alternations of lingual cortical bone (14 cases, 48.2%) were more frequent than those of buccal side (7 cases, 24.1%). CBCT images of DC showed definite root resorption and bucco-lingual tooth displacement. These findings were hardly observed on panoramic radiographs of DCs. Comparison of CBCT features of DC with those of OKC showed several different features. Conclusions : CBCT images of DC showed various characteristic radiographic features. Therefore, CBCT can be helpful for the diagnosis of DC radiographically.
Hakbongjongtaek(The head house of Uisong Kim family, 鶴峯宗宅), firstly built in the early 17th century, was moved to its neighboring place in the late 18th century. The man who led the relocation(移建) of the house was the eldest grandson of the family, Jong-soo, Kim. He made and overall plan and also participated in building the house. There remain four Gados(family paintings, 가도(家圖)) related to the relocation plan. This paper aims to make an analysis of these Gados, and through analysis, to find what was the essential poing of the relocation plan and how the point was represented in the paintings. The result of analysis is as follows: 1. The main focus of relocation plan was the form of Anchae(the inner house). Anchae was designed as asymmetrical form, and restricted to four kan. Only Andaechung needed to be 6 kan size for religious ceremonies. 2. For the design of Sarangchae, the displacement of large Sarangbang and small Sarangbang was an important issue. There were two ways of layout: parallel type and facing type. The latter was chosen. 3. The representation and techniques of Gado is quite concrete, in spite of differences among them. The expression of doors, windows, attic and kitchen was based on the understanding of space. Also the spatial division, which was expressed line on the grid, was based on the scaled ruler. As we've seen before, painting the relocation plan was a kind of endeavors to make the housing type as a realization of Garye. Also, we can find out that role of the eldest grandson of the family was quite important to carry out the plan. As well as, it was meaningful to examine Sadaebu (the aristocrat of Chosun)'s perception of housing.
More and more shipping containers are falling into the sea due to bad weather. Containers lost at sea negatively affect the shipping line, the trader and the consumer, and the environment. The question of locating and recovering dropped containers is a challenging engineering problem. Model-testing of small-scaled container models is proposed as an efficient way to investigate their falling trajectories to salvage them. In this study, we first build a standard 20-ft container model in SOLIDWORKS. Then, a three-dimensional (3D) geometric model in the STL (Standard Tessellation Language) format is exported to a Stratasys F170 Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printer. In total, six models were made of acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) and printed for the purpose of testing. They represent three different loading conditions with different densities and center of gravity (COG). Two samples for each condition were tested. The physical models were dropped into the towing tank of University of New Orleans (UNO). From the experimental tests, it is found that the impact of the initial position after sinking can cause a certain initial rolling velocity, which may have a great impact on the lateral displacement, and subsequently affect the final landing position. This series of model tests not only provide experimental data for the study of the trajectory of box-shape objects but also provide a valuable reference for maritime salvage operations and for the pipeline layout design.
Rib spalling is a major issue affecting the safety of steeply inclined coal seam. And the failure coal face and support system can be affected with each other to generate a vicious cycle along with inducing large-scale collapse of surrounding rock in steeply inclined coal seam. In order to analyze failure mechanism and propose the corresponding prominent control measures of steeply inclined coal working face, mechanical model based on coal face-support-roof system and mechanical model of coal face failure was established to reveal the disaster mechanism of rib spalling and the sensitive analysis of related factors was performed. Furthermore, taking 3402 working face of Chen-man-zhuang coal mine as engineering background, numerical model by using FLAC3D was built to illustrate the propagation of displacement and stress fields in steeply inclined coal seam and verify the theory analysis as mentioned in this study. The results show that the coal face slide body in steeply inclined working face can be observed as the failure height of upper layer smaller than that of lower layer exhibiting with an irregular quadrilateral pyramid shape. Moreover, the cracks were originated from the upper layer of sliding body and gradually developed to the lower layer causing the final rib spalling. The influence factors on the stability of coal face can be ranked as overlying strata pressure (P) > mechanical parameters of coal body (e.g., cohesion (c), internal fraction angle (φ)) > support strength (F) > the support force of protecting piece (F') > the false angle of working face (Θ). Moreover, the corresponding control measures to maintain the stability of the coal face in the steeply inclined working face were proposed.
This paper shows theresults of centrifuge model experiments to investigate the behavior of a replacement method in dredged and reclaimed ground. For this experimental work, centrifuge model tests were carried out to investigate the behavior of a replacement method in soft clay ground. Basic soil property tests were performed to find the mechanical properties of clay soil sampled from the southern coast of Korea, which was used for the ground material in the centrifuge model tests. The reconstituted clay ground of the model was prepared by applying reconsolidntion pressure in a 1 g condition with a specially built model container. Centrifuge model tests were carried out under the artificially accelerated gravitational level of 50 g. Replacement material of lead with a certain degree of angularity was used and placed until the settlement of the replacement material embankment reached a state of equilibrium. Vertical displacement of the replacement material was monitored during tests. The depth and shape of the replacement, especially the slope of the penetrated material and the water content of the clay ground were measured after finishing tests. Model tests for investigating the stability of an embankment after backfilling were also performed to simulate the behavior of a dike treated with replacement and backfilled with sandy material. As a result of the centrifuge model test, the behavior of the replacement, the mechanism of the replacement material being penetrated into clay ground, and the depth of the replacement were evaluated.
