  • Creation of a human skeleton model and characterization of the variation in the bone shape are fundamentally important in many applications of biomechanics. In this paper, we present a parametric shape modeling method for femurs that is based on extracting the main parameter of variations of the femur shape from a 3D model database by using statistical shape analysis. For this shape analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) is used. Application of the PCA to 3D data requires bringing all the models in correspondence to each other. For this reason, anatomical landmarks are used for guiding the deformation of the template model to fit the 3D model data. After subsequent application of PCA to a set of femur models, we calculate the correlation between the dominant components of shape variability for a target population and the anatomical parameters of the femur shape. Finally, we provide tools for visualizing and creating the femur shape using the main parameter of femur shape variation.

  • Five extended cylindrical reticulated shells are proposed by changing distribution rule of diagonal rods based on three fundamental types. Modeling programs for fundamental types and extended types of cylindrical reticulated shell are compiled by using the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). On this basis, conditional formulas are derived when the grid shape of cylindrical reticulated shells is equilateral triangle. Internal force analysis of cylindrical reticulated shells is carried out. The variation and distribution regularities of maximum displacement and stress are studied. A shape optimization program is proposed by adopting the sequence two-stage algorithm (RDQA) in FORTRAN environment based on the characteristics of cylindrical reticulated shells and the ideas of discrete variable optimization design. Shape optimization is achieved by considering the objective function of the minimum total steel consumption, global and locality constraints. The shape optimization for three fundamental types and five extended types is calculated with the span of 30 m~80 m and rise-span ratio of 1/7~1/3. The variations of the total steel consumption along with the span and rise-span ratio are analyzed with contrast to the results of shape optimization. The optimal combination of main design parameters for five extended cylindrical reticulated shells is investigated. The total steel consumption affected by distribution rule of diagonal rods is discussed. The results show that: (1) Parametric modeling method is simple, efficient and practical, which can quickly generate different types of cylindrical reticulated shells. (2) The mechanical properties of five extended cylindrical reticulated shells are better than their fundamental types. (3) The total steel consumption of cylindrical reticulated shells is optimized to be the least when rise-span ratio is 1/6. (4) The extended type of three-way grid cylindrical reticulated shell should be preferentially adopted in practical engineering. (5) The grid shape of reticulated shells should be designed to equilateral triangle as much as possible because of its reasonable stress and the lowest total steel consumption.

  • The coercivity of a single 27 nm-spherical barium ferrite (S-BaFe) particle was simulated using three models: 1) Gibbs free energy (GFE), 2) Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG), and 3) Stoner-Wohlfarth (S-W). Spherically and hexagonally shaped particles were used in the GFE and LLG simulations to investigate coercivity with the different shape anisotropies. The effect of shape was not included in the S-W model. It was found that the models using a spherical shape resulted in a coercivity higher than the models using the hexagonal shape with both shapes having the same diameter. The coercivity estimated with the S-W model was approximately the same as that for the spherical-shape models, which indicates that spherical shape has no significant effect on the particle's coercivity at nanoscale.

  • Self-excited noise generation from laminar flames in thin annular jets of methane/air premixture has been investigated experimentally. Various flames were observed in this flow configuration, including conical shape flames, ring shape flames, steady crown shape flames, and oscillating crown shape flames. Self-excited noise with the total sound pressure level of about 70dB was generated from the oscillating crown shape flames for the equivalence ratio larger than 0.95. Sound pressure and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured by using a microphone and a photomultiplier tube. The frequency of generated noise was measured as functions of equivalence ratio and premixture velocity. A frequency doubling phenomena have also been observed. The flame shape during flame oscillation was reconfirmed by a synchronized PIV experiment. The velocity and pressure field were obtained from PIV. The minimum pressure was formed near the edge of flame representing circulation. By comparing the results of sound pressure, flame luminosity and PIV, the noise source can be attributed to the flame front fluctuation near the edge of the oscillating crown-shape flames.

  • A jetfighter shape modeling method based on design features is researched, to improve the efficiency of shape modeling in the stage of conceptual aircraft design. The aircraft's general design features and shape parameters, including geometric and position parameters, are described. The coordinate systems of the entire aircraft and its components are defined. As a sample of local shape, a method of inlet intake modeling is introduced. The whole process of the modeling method is proposed. Three examples of different jetfighters are listed, to describe the achievement of basic layout, which includes four main elements. The Fusion of Components can be achieved by regulating the details of the sections of the fuselage. Sample Cases of typical layouts are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which provides the basis for further analysis and optimization.

  • This study examined the effect of nanoclays on the shape memory behavior of polyurethane (PU) in fibrous form. A cation was introduced into the PU molecules to disperse the organo-nanoclay (MMT) into poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL)-based PU (PCL-PU). The MMT/PCL-PU nanocomposites were then spun into fibers through melt-processing. The shape memory performance of the spun fibers was examined using a variety of thermo-mechanical tests including a new method to determine the transition temperature of shape memory polymers. The MMTs showed an improved the fixity strain rate of the MMT /PCL- PU fibers but a slight decrease in their recovery strain rate. This was explained by the limited movement of PU molecules due to the presence of nanoclays. The shape memory performance of the MMT/PCL-PU fibers was not enhanced significantly by the nanoclays. However, their recovery power was improved significantly up to a strain of approximately 50%.

  • The shape optimization of a Thomson coil actuator used in an arc eliminator is done for fast response by adopting topology modification method. The displacement of the plate in a fixed calculation time is taken as the objective function. The objective function and contribution factor are calculated by using an adaptive equivalent circuit method which has been proved accurate and efficient. Both shape optimization and performance analysis are accomplished based on the segmentation of plate. Through the refinement of the sensitive segments a precise optimal plate shape can be obtained. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by the comparison of results before and after the shape optimization.
