In this study, settlement characteristics of 38 CFRD was investigated from monitoring data and the method to estimate the dam settlements considering valley shape during constructions was proposed. The construction modulus of dam was found to be dependent on void ratios and valley shape factor. The construction modulus varied with valley shape and decreased with increasing void ratio. Also, the modulus was increased when the shape coefficient was less than 4. The settlement investigation results showed that the total settlement was proportional to the value of the settlement coefficient multiplied by the shape coefficient divided by void ratio.
In the shape design optimization of an airfoil, the shape function has been used to find the optimal airfoil shape for given conditions. The parameters determining the airfoil shape are used in the shape design optimization as design variables. However, they usually don't have physical meaning. The PARSEC (Parametric Shapes) function is a recently proposed shape function and its parameters have the physical meaning. In this study the usefulness of the PARSEC is tested for the RAE2822 airfoil in the transonic flow region to reduce the shock strength and the result is compared with Hicks-Henne function. The optimized airfoils reduce the shock strength and they show similar result.

Diffuser design is crucial for water-chilled heat storage. Its impact on the system performance is more significant for the underground tank due to inherent limit on the aspect ratio and tank shape. The effect of diffuser shape on the performance of the water-chilled heat storage is numerically investigated. Three dimensional simulation has been conducted for fully incorporating the complex diffuser shape and the non-symmetric tank shape. Mixing at the inlet of the diffuser depends on the inlet Reynolds number, Froude number and the diffuser shape. Three types of the diffuser shape and the broad range of Reynolds number (Re=400, 800, 1200) and Froude number (Fr=0.5, 1.0, 2.0) are examined. The performance of the heat storage tank is evaluated by the thermocline thickness which is reverse to the degree of stratification. The radial regulated plate diffuser, which is the suggested diffuser shape in this study, shows the lowest thermocline thickness in the condition considered.

The tensile test is generally used to measure mechanical properties with conventional fracture test. This test is extremely certain method to measure Young's modulus, yield strength, tensile strength and so on. ASTM, by international standard, prescribes two classes of tensile tests in tubular products. One is method that specimens aren't done by any process with Tube-shape. The other is that specimens are made on process for C-shape. In this paper, we would like to present the new-shape specimens for the tensile test. The presented specimen's shape is that put two pieces of C-shape specimens together. Besides a load point and a support point are fixed like Tube-shape specimens. This shape of specimen has a difference that existing specimen is made on one-step process out this specimen is made on two-step process. This shape is considered that stress concentration phenomenon occurs at the reduced section if a specimen is made on one step process.

A numerical method is presented to predict and analyze the shape of a growing billet produced from the "spray forming process" which is a fairly new near-net shape manufacturing process. It is important to understand the mechanism of billet growing because one can obtain a billet with the desired final shape without secondary operations by accurate control of the billet shape, and it can also serve as a base for heat transfer and deformation analysis. The shape of a growing billet is determined by the flow rate of the alloy melt, the mode of nozzle scanning which is due to cam profile, the initial positio of the spray nozzle, scanning angle, and the withdrawal speed of the substrate. In the present study, a theoretical model is first established to predict the shape of the billet and next the effects of the most dominent processing conditions, such as withdrawal speed of the substrate and the cam profile, on the shape of the growing billet are studied. Process conditions are obtained to produce a billet with uniform diameter and flat top surface, and an ASP30 high speed steel billet is manufactured using the same process conditions established from the simulation.imulation.
This paper aims to study the fracture mechanism of rocks under the 'u'shape cutters considering the effects of crack (pre-existing crack) distances, crack spacing and crack inclination angles. The effects of loading rates on the rock fragmentation underneath these cutters have been also studied. For this purpose, nine experimental samples with dimensions of 5 cm×10 cm×10 cm consisting of the non-persistent cracks were prepared. The first three specimens' sets had one non-persistent crack (pre-existing crack) with a length of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45°, and 90°. The spacing between the crack and the "u" shape cutter was 2 cm. The second three specimens" set had one non-persistent crack with a length of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45°, and 90° but the spacing between pre-existing crack and the "u" shape cutter was 4 cm. The third three specimens'set has two non-persistent cracks with lengths of 2 cm and angularity of 0°, 45° and 90°. The spacing between the upper crack and the "u" shape cutter was 2 cm and the spacing between the lower crack and the upper crack was 2 cm. The samples were tested under a loading rate of 0.005 mm/s. concurrent with the experimental investigation. The numerical simulations were performed on the modeled samples with non-persistent cracks using PFC2D. These models were tested under three different loading rates of 0.005 mm/s, 0.01 mm/sec and 0.02 mm/sec. These results show that the crack number, crack spacing, crack angularity, and loading rate has important effects on the crack growth mechanism in the rocks underneath the "u" shape cutters. In addition, the failure modes and the fracture patterns in the experimental tests and numerical simulations are similar to one another showing the validity and accuracy of the current study.

Using an isogeometric approach, a continuum-based shape design optimization method is developed for steady state power flow problems at high frequencies. In case the isogeometric method is employed to the shape design optimization, the NURBS basis functions used in CAD geometric modeling are directly utilized to embed the exact geometry into the computational framework so that the design parameterization for shape optimization is much easier than that in the finite element method and consequently provides the enhanced smoothness of design perturbations. Thus, exact geometric models can be used in both the response and the shape sensitivity analyses, where normal vector and curvature are continuous over the whole design space so that enhanced shape sensitivity can be expected. Through numerical examples, the developed isogeometric sensitivity is compared with finite difference one to provide excellent agreement. Also, it turns out that the proposed method works very well in the shape optimization problems.

A newly puzzle shape of crestbond rib shear connector is a type of ductile perfobond rib shear connector. This shear connector has some advantages, including relatively easy rebar installation and cutting, as well as the higher shear resistance strength. Thus, this study proposed a newly puzzle shape of crestbond rib with a "${\mho}$" shape, and its shear resistance behaviors and shear strengths were examined using push-out tests. Five main parameters were considered in the push-out specimens to evaluate the effects of shear resistance parameters such as the dimensions of the crestbond rib, transverse rebars in the crestbond dowel, concrete strength, rebar strength, and dowel action on the shear strength. The shear loading test results were used to compare the changes in the shear behaviors, failure modes, and shear strengths. It was found that the concrete strength and number of transverse rebars in the crestbond rib were significantly related to its shear resistance. After the initial bearing resistance behavior of the concrete dowel, a relative slip occurred in all the specimens. However, its rigid behavior to shear loading decreased the ductility of the shear connection. The cross-sectional area of the crestbond rib was also shown to have a minor effect on the shear resistance of the crestbond rib shear connector. The failure mechanism of the crestbond rib shear connector was complex, and included compression, shear, and tension. As a failure mode, a crack was initiated in the middle of the concrete slab in a vertical direction, and propagated with increasing shear load. Then, horizontal cracks occurred and propagated to the front and rear faces of the specimens. Based on the results of this study, a design shear strength equation was proposed and compared with previously suggested equations.
The bearing mechanism of tunnel-type anchorage (TTA) for suspension bridges is studied. Model tests are conducted using different shapes of plug bodies, which are circular column shape and circular truncated cone shape. The results show that the plug body of the latter shape possesses much larger bearing capacity, namely 4.48 times at elastic deformation stage and 4.54 times at failure stage compared to the former shape. Numerical simulation is then conducted to understand the mechanical and structural responses of plug body and surrounding rock mass. The mechanical parameters of the surrounding rock mass are firstly back-analyzed based on the monitoring data. The calculation laws of deformation and equivalent plastic strain show that the numerical simulation results are rational and provide subsequent mechanism analysis with an established basis. Afterwards, the bearing mechanism of TTA is studied. It is concluded that the plug body of circular truncated cone shape is able to take advantage of the material strength of the surrounding rock mass, which greatly enhances its bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of TTA, therefore, is concluded to be determined by the material strength of surrounding rock mass. Finally, recommendations for TTA design are proposed and discussed.
Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) has been widely used for the development and fabrication of nano-powder with various morphologies such as particle, wire, rod, and tube. So far, many researchers have reported about shape control and fabrication of AAO films. However, they have reported on the shape control with different diameter and length of anodic aluminum oxide mainly. We present a combined mild-hard (or hard-mild) anodization to prepare shape-controlled AAO films. Two main parameters which are combination mild-hard (or hard-mild) anodization and run-time of voltage control are applied in this work. The voltages of mild and hard anodization are respectively 40 and 80 V. Anodization was conducted on the aluminum sheet in 0.3 mole oxalic acid at $4^{\circ}C$. AAO films with morphologies of varying interpore distance, branch-shaped pore, diameter-modulated pore and long funnel-shaped pore were fabricated. Those shapes will be able to apply to fabricate novel nano-materials with potential application which is especially a support to prevent volume expansion of inserted active materials, such as metal silicon or tin powder, in lithium ion battery. The silicon powder electrode using an AAO as a support shows outstanding cycle performance as 1003 mAh/g up to 200 cycles.
