  • Ningbo Port develops quickly in recent years and with the combination of Ningbo Port and Zhoushan Port, it becomes another important port in the Shanghai International Shipping center. Competition between the two biggest ports in this area can't be avoided. The goal of this paper is investigating the competence of port from two angles, which are spatial structure of the ports cluster and neighboring ports' attraction to cargoes at conjunct hinterlands. The paper firstly uses the HHI index model and shift-share method to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the data of container throughputs of ports in the shipping center, in order that investigates the spatial structure of ports cluster. Basing on above researches, the paper employs the location quotient to study Shanghai port and Ningbo port's hinterland distributions at Zhejiang province. The conclusion of this study:(I)the ports cluster of the Shanghai International Shipping Center is highly centralized, and undergoes a porcess of first centralization then decentralization since the mid of 90s, last century. (2)Hinterlands of Shanghai port includes: Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou and Quzhou districts; Hinterlands of Ningbo port includes: Ningbo, Taizhou and Zhoushan districts.

  • This Article analyses the present situation of Shanghai Harbour and the Harbour's important role in the development of chinese economy. The article forecasts that the yearly tonnage turnover of the port will reach about 200 million tons in the year of 2000, possibly reach to 270--300 million tons by the end of 2020. it also forecasts that the container handling capacity of the port will be 2 million TEUS in 2000 and 6 million TEUS in 2020 respectively. In order to keep pace with the present situation of opening up and developing Pudong new area, this article suggests that the strategic target of the management and development of Shanghai Harbour should be : grasp the opportunity of opening up and developing Pudong, take the building of the deep-waterway port as the main task, which can accept the third or fourth generation international container ships, bring into full play the traditional advantages the Harbour has, unfold the businesses in other fields, participate in the marketing competition, speed up the development of the Harbour itself, make efferts to build Shanghai Harbour into a port-industry-trade-transportation integral modernized international deep-water key port.

  • Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to examine development strategy that Shanghai port has practiced, and to take out some productive implications to be applied to other port. Research design, data and methodology - The research methods to be applied is first to look into some development progress in terms of trade volumes, and then to review development strategy that is classified with two different aspects, and finally to identify implications. Results - Following the change of economic environment that China has joined to WTO, the way of doing business in Chinese economy has transferred to market economy more closely. Trade volume is higher than before and it attracts to build national infrastructure including port. Development strategy has to be needed to take care of newly faced economic situations, within two aspects, hardware and software approach. Both construction and management are answer to competitive port of Shanghai. Conclusions - From the development strategy of Shanghai port, hardware and software aspects should be emphasized, and it is evident that both trade volume of shipping market and the willingness of port authority have to be getting along with each other in development strategy.

  • This study aims to (1) investigate the main factors for the evaluation of port competitiveness through a literature review; (2) compare each terminal's competitiveness in Busan and Shanghai ports using TOPSIS methodology; (3) determine how to improve Busan port competitiveness. TOPSIS analysis of throughput shows that the terminals in Shanghai (SMCT, SGICT) are competitive. Shanghai is ranked first in both the port physical analysis (SMCT) and the financial one (SSICT). Total competitiveness analysis shows that Shanghai terminals (SSICT, SMCT, and SGICT) are more competitive than the ones in the Busan port. In this analysis, the SSICT ranks the top terminal in port physical and financial categories, while the SMCT ranks the first terminal in terms of throughput. The results of this study provide important policy implications for the Busan port, whose international status as a transshipment port and international logistics hub has lowered, and whose recent growth is slower than that of the competing international ports.

  • Gastric cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer death. The majority of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma in China present with advanced disease. Ruling out unresectable cancers from an unnecessary "open" exploration is very important. The aim of this study was to assess the value of five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration in T4 gastric cancer in comparison with three-port laparoscopic exploration and laparotomy exploration. We conducted a retrospective study on 126 patients with T4 stage scheduled for D2 curative gastrectomy based on computed tomography (CT) staging at Department of Gastric Cancer and Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center, from Apr. 2011 to Apr. 2013. Laparotomy exploration (Group I), three-port laparoscopic exploration (Group II) or five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration (Group III) were performed prior to radical gastrectomy. Accuracy rate for feasibility of D2 curative gastrectomy in laparotomy exploration and five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration groups was higher than that in the three-port laparoscopic exploration group. Five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration group had the highest accuracy resection rate (Group I vs Group II vs Group III,92.6% vs78.6% vs 97.7%; p<0.05) and shorter length of hospitalization (Group I vs Group II vs Group III, $9.58{\pm}4.17$ vs $6.13{\pm}2.85$ vs $5.00{\pm}1.81$; p<0.001). Three-port laparoscopic exploration has low accuracy rate for assessing feasibility of D2 curative gastrectomy and five-port anatomical laparoscopic exploration should be performed on patients with T4 gastric cancer.

  • As developing for dozens of years, East Asia has been a central area of world economic and trade growth. The containerization of East Asia also goes up rapidly. With the development of this area, countries all try hard to dispute the status of international shipping centre. The competitors of Shanghai Port are Busan Port, Kobe Port and GaoXiong Port. This thesis analyses these three Ports and Shanghai Port‘s information. The main point is Shanghai Port’s merits and faults, and also compares these four ports‘ competition of soft and hardware. At last, this thesis expatiates some concrete measures of Shanghai Port's constructing.

  • Ship Pilotage is one of the most important parts in the construction and development of Shanghai International Shipping Center as it has the fundamental function for the promotion and speed-up of the ship navigation and cargo operation. Recently, Shanghai Maritime University and Shanghai Harbour Pilotage Administration Station had carried out a research project of 'Study on Ship Safety Pilotage in the Shanghai Harbour by Way of FSA (Formal Safety Assessment)'. The aim of this project is to put out some proposes of the decision-making for the improvement of the safety pilotage in Shanghai habour through the way of the FSA. Now these proposes of the decision-making have been adopted and conducted in practice and satisfactory results have been achieved. In the paper, some detailed information, methods and ideas about this research project have been introduced and explained for improving the safety pilotage in Shanghai Harbour.

  • Due to rapid growth of economy in the world, which results into shipping goods flow one place to another in large volumes, the competition becoming more intense among ports. Shanghai port and Ningbo-Zhoushan port are the two most important ports in the Yangtze River Delta and have the same economic hinterland, inevitably there is a heated competition between the two ports. This paper using the approach of SWOT to analyze the issue of competition and cooperation between the two ports, and then makes an analysis of their Co-opetition strategies by employing the analyzing methods based on the Game theory. Finally, it puts forward some strategies to enhance the cooperation between the two ports.
