  • Recently, the top & down method with drilled shafts as a foundation of high rise building is often adopted for the purpose of construction period reduction and construction cost effectiveness. It is common to omit the loading test as a Quality assurance on account of the high capacity of drilled shafts for the top & down method. It seems that the capacity of drilled shaft in recent top & down method is beyond that of conventional loading test method. However, the quality assurance for the drilled shaft as foundation of high rise building becomes much more important since the drilled shaft should bear much higher working load. It may be a small scale test pile could be an alternative as a quality assurance for the drilled shaft with high capacities. Through a case study, this paper gives an idea for solving the limitation of the conventional loading test method for the quality assurance of drilled shaft with high capacities. In particular, this paper analyzed the scale effect for a small drilled shaft installed into bedrock, which could be used for an alternative.

  • This paper presents the root cause failure analysis of the circulating water pump in the 560 MW thermal power plant. A fractured austenitic stainless-steel shaft operated for 24 years was examined. Fracture morphology was investigated by micro and macro-fractographic analysis. The metallurgical analyses including chemical analysis, metallography and hardness testing were performed. The analysis reveals that the pump shaft was fractured due to the reverse bending load with combination of rotating bending load. Corrective actions for plant operator was recommended based on the analysis.

  • Investigation results are presented fur the shaft end displacements due to the elastic deformation of the casing and support in double suction centrifugal pump. Suction and discharge nozzles of the pump are subject to external piping loads and, in API 610, maximum values of their components are specified. This means that each nozzle can be subject to various combinations of loading conditions. Considering upper and lower criteria of each load, we must perform for the 4,096 load cases, and assign the direction and range of the loads. So, this paper develops an efficient procedure(Compliance Coefficient Method) to calculate the shaft end displacements(@ coupling) to determine whether satisfying the pump's standard. Also, we analyzed the effects of the casing and support thickness on shaft end displacements.

  • In the process of designing a wheel balancer an ergonomic evaluation model has shown that manual tire handling onthe machine was often the major problem, The root of the problem lay in the design of machine's shaft which is influenced by the opeative handling task. Several methods were reviewed for determining the correct shaft' sizes but the Revised NIOSH Equation and the Lifting Stress Calculator were found to be the only suitable models for this study. An application of these mathematical models has shoed that the shaft length and the shaft height were the most critical measurement By analyzing these conclusion s the correct shaft size parameters became clearly defined.

  • The Timoshenko beam theories are used to model the rotating shaft. The nondimensional equations of motion for the rotating shaft subjected to moving mass and compressive axial forces are derived by using Hamilton's principle. Influence of system parameters such as the speed ratio. the mass ratio and the Rayleigh coefficient is discussed on the response of the moving system. The effects of compressive axial forces are also included in the analysis. The results are presented and compared with the available solutions of a rotating shaft subject to a moving mass and a moving load.

  • This study aims to find the friction welding and induction harden conditions, which are obtained by welding conditions, and the friction welding characteristics and induction harden conditions of tubular shaft were investigated with respect to low load test, high load test. Friction welding and induction harden machine have been widely used in manufacturing reflects of metal. The material of solid and tubular shaft selected that is used for parts of automobile steel. Such as steel are easy to be machined because of their proper material. As a result I obtained the data of friction welding conditions makes good and the condition of friction and get the tubular condition. The purpose of this study is to find fatigue test condition and induction harden characteristics design for tubular shaft.

  • This paper proposes an accelerated life evaluation of drive shaft for the power train parts of special purpose vehicle. It is necessary the real load data of usage level driving load condition for life evaluation of power train parts, but we can't get the load spectrum data for evaluation in many case of special purpose vehicle. So, in this paper, the road load spectrum data for evaluation is created by modeling and simulation based on vehicle data and special road condition. The inverse power model is used for accelerated life test. The equivalent torque of load spectrum is achieved using the Miner's Rule. This paper also proposes the calibrated acceleration life test method for drive shaft. The fatigue test is performed through three stress levels. The lifetime at normal stress level is predicted by extrapolation, and is verified through comparison of experimental results and load spectrum data.

  • An experimental study is performed to investigate the frequency effects of the excitation force on the linear stiffness and damping coefficients of a LOP (load on pad) type five-pad tilting pad journal bearing with the diameter of 300.91 mm and the length of 149.80 mm. The main parameter of interest in the present work is excitation frequency to shake the test bearing. The excitation frequency is controlled independently, using orthogonally mounted hydraulic exciters. The relative movement between the bearing and shaft, and the acceleration of the bearing casing are measured as a function of excitation frequency using the different values of bearing load and shaft speed. Measurements show that the variation of excitation frequency has quite a little effect on both stiffness and damping coefficients. Both direct stiffness and damping coefficients in the direction of bearing load decrease by the increase of shaft speed, but increase with the bearing load.

  • This paper describes the effects of exciting frequency on the stiffness and damping coefticients of a 5-pad tilting pad journal bearing, LOP (load on pad) type. The stiffness and damping coefficients are investigated experimentally under the different values of exciting frequency, bearing load and shaft speed. These coefficients are estimated by measuring the response of the relative displacement between the bearing and the shaft and acceleration of the bearing due to the known exciting loads acting on the bearing. In order to analysis the response of exciting load, displacement and acceleration, a FFT analyzer is used. It is shown that the variation of exciting frequency has a little effect on both the stiffness and damping coefficients. Both the stiffness and damping coefficients in the loading direction are decreased by the increase of shaft speed but increased by the increase of bearing load.
