  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty in elementary school students in the upper grades and to verify its effectiveness. Methods: This study had a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The subjects of this study were a total of 95 sixth-graders in Y city (experimental group: 48, control group: 47). The measurement variables were sexual knowledge, body image, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Four sessions of the experience-based sex education program to improve adjustment to puberty, consisting of 40 minutes per session, were provided to the experimental group. Results: Children's sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and satisfaction with life in the experimental group, which participated in the experience-based sexual education program to improve adjustment to puberty, showed a significant increase compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference in body image. Conclusion: This study presents the development of an experience-based sex education program for adjustment to puberty to overcome the shortcomings of existing sex education programs that are limited to sexual knowledge and attitudes, and also verified that the sexual knowledge, self-esteem, and life satisfaction of the elementary school students who were provided with the program improved meaningfully.

The frequency, $x^2$-test and t-test were calculated. Summarized findings from the study are as follows : groups before sex education. 1. Regarding the first hypothesis was supported as following : "The scores of sexual knowledge in the experimental group who was given sex education will be higher than those of the control group who was not given." (t=-14.11, p=.000) 2. Regarding the second hypothesis was supported as following : "The scores of the attitude toward sex in the experimental group who given sex education will be higher than those of the control group who was not given." • The goal of this study is to discover the effect of sex education on sex-related knowledge and attitudes of middle school girls. Non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The number of experimental group students was 134 and the number of control group students was 134. A total of 268 second grade middle school girls were selected for a convenience sampling method. This study was carried out in a middle school located in Taegu City, Korea, from February 5 to February 18, 1998. To des cover the needs of sex education, the researcher sent a predesigned questionnaire to 1464 girls in 19 different middle schools. The sex education curriculum was designed on the basis of this survey's results. 'The Sex Education Teaching Plan' (published by the Research Institution of Korean School Health Education) and 'Sex and Happiness' (published by the Seoul City Education Ministry) were used to redesign the sex education curriculum and content. Fifty minute long sex education classes were taught to the experimental group every other day and the total number of classes was five. The contents of the teaching -learning plan for sex education were: 'The Characteristics of Adolescence', 'Pregnancy and Contraception', 'Friendship with the Opposite Sex and Prevention of Sexual Violence', 'Prevention of Venereal Disease', and 'Sex and Society'. To measure the degree of sex knowledge of the subjects, the researcher used the modified sex knowledge tools of Kim(l995) and Han(1997). The reliability values of these sex knowledge tools range from 0.71 to 0.74, using Cronbach's alpha. To measure the degree of sex attitude in the subjects, the researcher used the modified sex attitudes tools of Han(l997). The reliability values of these sex attitude tools range from 0.73 to 0.78 using Cronbach's alpha. The PC-SAS package program was used to analyse the data along with Frequency, Percentage, XLtest, t -test, and a paired t -test The results of this study were as follows; 1. The first hypothesis was accepted. The experimental group showed more change in sex - related knowledge than the control group(t =22. 76, p=0.0001). 2. The second hypothesis was accepted. The experimental group showed more change in sex-related attitudes than the control group (t=11.91, p=0.0001). In conclusion, the level of sex-related knowledge and sex-related attitudes of middle school girls who received sex education was higher than that of the girls who did not receive sex education. According to this research, planned sex education was effective in forming accurate knowlege and appropriate attitudes related to sex. Clearly, we must carry out a well-designed step by step sex education program that is well-suited to the sex education needs and the developmental level of the students.

  • This study developed the sex education program based on the 'reproduction and development' unit of the middle school science, and examined its effectiveness on middle school boys' sex-related knowledge and attitude towards sex. The sex education program consisted of six topics of the structures and functions of generative organs, the importance of life, abortion, the human generation process, venereal diseases and AIDS, and responsibility of self-determination on sexual behavior. The results indicated that the experimental group demonstrated the statistically higher scores of the knowledge on sex than the control groups' scores, especially in the subcategories of 'pregnancy and delivery' and 'sex-related health'. However, both groups did not display any statistical difference on the attitude toward sex. In the subcategory of the attitude towards sex, the experimental group showed the statistically higher scores on 'self-determination and selection' and 'a health relationship'. In addition, the Pearson correlation results indicated the strongest relationship between the attitude toward sex and 'the self-determination and selection'. These results implicated that the sex education program related to the unit of reproduction and development in the middle school science helps the middle school boys develop the better knowledge and attitude towards sex.

Result: There was a significant difference in the marriage-expectation score between the two groups. However, the sex role attitudes score in the experimental group was not significantly different from that of the control group. Conclusion: This premarital education program for singles had positive effects on marriage expectations but not on sex role attitude. Longer follow-up might be needed to evaluate these effects.

Three months after the conclusion of sex education program, the follow-up evaluation showed decline in effect of education, which suggests a need for continuous sex education. As students showed high level of satisfaction, we expect school doctor of Korean medicine can improve knowledge on health and further increase familiarity in Korean medicine by this kind of sex education Conclusions: Sex education by school doctor of Korean medicine for elementary school students from fourth to sixth grade has effectively changed sexual knowledge and attitude.
