In this study, sand compaction pile method was adopted to improve the soft ground under the permanent dyke, namely west sea dyke of Incheon New Port. The row replacement ratio 30% was applied to consider the ground condition, environmental side and the construction cost of the site. The stability and displacement analysis was carried out by respectively SLOPE/W and PLAXIS 2D program. Based on this analysis, it is found that the safety factor and displacement is within an allowable criteria. The model experiment was carried out using the acryl soil box with $400(H){\times}1200(L){\times}250(W)mm$ to show the displacement of the dyke and behavior of soft ground. Based on this experiment results, it is found that the settlement does not occur from 1 and 2 loading phases and horizontal displacement of 0.0075% occurs from 2 phases. It is also found that the differential settlement occurs 0.05mm corresponding respectively 0.02% and 0.03% of the dyke height(15cm).

The allowable bearing capacity of a pile, the most important factor in stability estimation, is determined by applying safety factor to the ultimate load or yield load. There are several but contradictory methods available in current design codes to estimate the allowable bearing capacity and the safety factor. This paper analyzes load-settlement curves obtained from 19 static load tests measured from 11 sites. At all tests, the load is applied until apparent failure is observed. The validity of the ultimate and yield load estimation method and load caculated from the settlement criterion is investigated through comparison with the measured data. In addition, a new procedure to estimate allowable load and safety factor is proposed. Additional data from field static load tests, such as those incorporated in this study, are needed to more reliably apply the proposed method in design practice.
In the note a comprehensive and optimal passive-active mode for describing the limit failure of circular shallow tunnel with settlement is put forward to predict the catastrophic stability during the geotechnical construction. Since the surrounding soil mass around tunnel roof is not homogeneous, with tools of variation calculus, several different curve functions which depict several failure shapes in different soil layers are obtained using virtual work formulae. By making reference to the simple-form of Power-law failure criteria based on numerous experiments, a numerical procedure with consideration of combination of upper bound theorem and stochastic medium theory is applied to the optimal analysis of shallow-buried tunnel failure. With help of functional catastrophe theory, this work presented a more accurate and optimal failure profile compared with previous work. Lastly the note discusses different effects of parameters in new yield rule and soil mechanical coefficients on failure mechanisms. The scope of failure block becomes smaller with increase of the parameter A and the range of failure soil mass tends to decrease with decrease of unit weight of the soil and tunnel radius, which verifies the geomechanics and practical case in engineering.
The problems associated with constructing high-speed concrete track embankments over soft compressible soil has lead to the development and/or extensive use of many of the ground improvement techniques used today. Drains, surcharge loading, and geosynthetic reinforcement, have all been used to solve the settlement and embankment stability issues associated with construction on soft soils. However, when time constraints are critical to the success of the project, owners have resorted to another innovative approach. Especially, the design criteria of residual settlement is limited as 30mm for concrete track embankment, it is very difficult to satisfy this standard using the former construction method. Pile net method consist of vertical columns that are designed to transfer the load of the embankment through the soft compressible soil layer to a firm foundation and one or more layers of geosynthetic reinforcement placed between the top of the columns and the bottom of the embankment. This paper will present the guidelines for the design of pile net method to supported embankments. These guidelines were developed based on a review of current design methodologies and a parametric study of design variables using numerical modeling.
This study was carried out to investigate safety evaluation of agricultural reservoirs due to raising the embankment. The seepage analysis and large-scale model test were performed to compare and analyze the pore water pressure(PWP), leakage quantity, settlement and piping phenomenon in the inclined core type and the vertical core type embankments. The PWP after raising the embankment showed smaller than before raising the embankment and the stability for piping after raising the embankment. The allowable seepage quantity and the allowable leakage for the steady state and transient conditions is within the range of safe management standard. After raising the embankment in the inclined core, there was no infiltration by leakage. For the vertical core, the PWP showed a large change by faster infiltration of pore water than in the inclined core. In a rapid drawdown, inclined core was remained stable but the vertical core showed a large change in PWP. Settlement after raising the embankment showed larger amounts of settlement than before raising the embankment. The leakage quantity before raising the embankment and the inclined core type showed no leakage. From the result, an instrument system that can accurately estimate a change of PWP shall be established for the rational maintenance and stabilization of raising the embankment for agricultural reservoirs.
The Ballast Track has been widely applied in traditionally due to low initial cost and abundant elastic property. But the disadvantages of Ballast track are; labor-intensive and costly maintenance, weak in high-speed and heavy axial load, in additionally need wide cross section of tunnel and massive substructure in viaduct. Therefore, recent applications tend to more and more towards slab track such as Gyeungbu high speed rail and existing line. The slab track increased the stability, resistance and durability of track, and save maintenance cost compare to the Ballast Track. But the slab track have weakness of track elongation by sub-ballast differential settlement and that threat safety of train operation. Therefor the slab track need to prevent cracks in concrete ballast for insure the durability of slab track. In this paper, review main items and its expected effects of the slab track maintenance standards that control sub-ballast settlement and concrete ballast cracks.

In recent days, the safety of the levee has been an issue because the levee has become bigger according to the Four-river Restoration Project and so on. The greater part of the levee damage has occurred in the interface between soils and the structures. Specially, the drainage construction crosses the levee keeps its settlement down in order to secure a grade of drainage. However, when the settlement isn't generated by using foundation such as pile, the levee is more likely to have leakage at the interface because the construction doesn't behave with soils. In our study, therefor, testing of the behavior of the levee having the drainage construction was carried out to clarify the effects of the foundation type of drainage construction.

Micropile has been widely used for reinforcing general grounds, improving slope stability and structural foundations. However, a need still exists for evaluating the effects of inclined micropiles on shallow foundations in Korea. In this paper, numerical analyses were presented to evaluate settlement characteristics on shallow foundations reinforced by micropiles and the effects of inclined micropiles under various conditions such as the installation position, installation angle, hardness(diameter), and grouting type. In addition, this paper reports trends of effectiveness and efficiency of using inclined micropiles on shallow foundations under specified conditions.

This paper presents the results of 3-D analysis on steady state flow in the region where the leakage in a cable tunnel is occurred due to high excess ground water pressure. In numerical modeling, a relief well is selected as a method of reduction in water pressure at the surrounding region of the cable tunnel. The distribution of ground water level after dewatering by relief wells is analyzed, Results show that the amount of dewatering level in the layer of hard rock is about 4.2∼8.6m, and that in the layer of fracture zone is about 5.8∼8.2m. The predicted settlement at the cable tunnel due to the increase of effective stress by dewatering is 0.3mm.
The installation of soft ground instruments and the performance of measurement and management of the measurement shall be carried out in order to ensure the safety of the construction work and to improve the quality of the construction work. The purpose of the pressure density deposition calculation is to determine the stability of the foundation ground and the formulation by measuring and calculating the density conditions generated on the soil through the period of neglect after completion of the soil at each stage. In practice, it is judged that the analysis by the hyperbolic method can be applied to the safety side.
